According to Dr. Bhatia, this is the first time the concept has been tried in India. He's started using the Smart-Drinking project with a couple of his patients, and 4% of them have already shown signs of improvement. He also openly attacked policymakers' role as promoters of addictive behavior at the highest levels of government.
"When people ask me why Punjab is often in the news for drug and substance addiction, I tell them it's because we don't have strong leadership to stop it." To tackle the problem, we lack policy-making and leadership levels, as well as sufficient resources to drive our rehabilitation programmed to adopt a patient-friendly environment. That is why the majority of state-run rehabilitation centers are located in rural areas.
