The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County fights social injustice through civil legal advocacy for people living in poverty. We provide individual representation, community education, systemic advocacy, and strategic collaborative approaches to address legal issues and resolve problems in important areas of basic need including health, housing, income and freedom from violence. Legal Aid is an integral part of San Mateo County’s safety net and has a history of successfully collaborating with community agencies, local governments, health care providers, and pro bono attorneys to provide coordinated services to low-income residents.

Legal Aid is a medium-sized nonprofit, with an annual operating budget of $2.8 million. Our staff of 30 committed professionals, including 15 attorneys, provides direct legal services to over 2,000 low-income households in San Mateo County each year and indirectly impacts thousands more through our policy and advocacy work at both the local and state level.
