11 Positive Parenting Dr. Divya Vallippadavil 2. Never Make it a Competition President of Knanaya Catholic Parents love to compare — we can’t help it! And sometimes, we’ll Women’s Forum of North America (KCWFNA) Email: [email protected] even tell our kids that they’re better than others such as “You scored more goals than all your teammates combined!”. As we begin the new school year, I would like to share how we can raise confident and mentally strong kids by doing 3 things. As parents, we Often,it’s done with good intentions. We want them to feel as proud want our kids to feel good about themselves, so we try to praise them as as we do, and to be motivated to do even better the next time, but for all much as possible. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Research shows the wrong reasons. It’s not healthy to be trapped in a vicious cycle of that there are benefits to praising kids. A simple compliment can generate competition. Social comparisons can teach kids to always measure self-worth and pride. However, it depends on what kind of praise we give, success based on the outcomes of other people. as well as when and how frequently. Even worse, according to research, giving kids praise in terms of I have repetitively seen the negative effects of overpraising a child’s comparison, in some cases, can cultivate narcissism, attention-seeking talent or outcome such as “This looks amazing!”, “You’re so handsome!”, behavior, and a lack of teamwork values. The better approach is to or”Good job!”, but these short, exaggerated reactions can cause kids to encourage them to compare their past efforts with their present efforts, only focus on things that may harm their self-esteem. They might feel rather than with other people. This gets them into the habit of shifting performance anxiety. For example, kids may think to themselves, “If I get their goals away from being better than everyone else and toward self- this answer wrong, I am dumb”, or believe that they are only appreciated improvement. for their appearance (“What if people think I look weird in this shirt? Then they won’t love me”). 3.Using Observational Language So, should you praise your kids at all? Of course. But there are right Observational language contains only logical and observational and wrong ways to give praise. Here’s what parents of confident, self- statements which are direct and to the point. Avoid statements like, “That’s motivated, and mentally strong kids always do: so good!”, but instead you may want to say, “I love the colors in your painting. Tell me more about why you chose them.” This is what it means 1. Praise the Process to praise the process. When you praise the process (e.g., the kid putting effort into a math Another exampleparents of motivated kids might say is, “You were so assignment), instead of the talent or outcome (e.g., the kid’s natural ability careful and focused while riding your bike. It can also make them more they were smart, while the second group was told they were successful excited to take on more challenging things in the future. because they worked hard. Lastly, it’s important to create an environment of emotional safety. If When the two groups were given a variety of puzzles, children in the your child failed a spelling test, refrain from telling them they should have second group were more likely to choose a harder puzzle. The findings studied harder. Instead, ask them what they think they can do to improve showed that praising the process made them more likely to feel confident next time.Kids need to know that they can come to their parents not just in a task even if they made a mistake. when they’ve done something well, but also when they are struggling with a specific task or challenge.Your words as a parent have great power. 20 KCYL CHICAGO One of the things we all love about our Knanaya Community in Chicago is our ability to host big events and gather together on a regular basis. While this was certainly challenged over the past year with the COVID pandemic, KCYL Chicago stayed active and stronger than ever. The KCYL Executive Board has worked hard to organize fun and creative activities to unite our members during these tough times, while keeping everyone’s safety and current restrictions in mind. Solomon Edat This summer, we ran the first ever KCYL Paranoia Tournament: a friendly and exciting toy Nerf gun competition with 12 teams of KCYL members. Between June and August, these teams did whatever it took–ran through parking lots, waited in front of houses, hid inside movie theaters, snuck up on people after work–to shoot and eliminate their opponents. After 2 months of close competition and great memories, the tournament ended with the first place team (Timmy Kaithakkathottiyil, Royce Perikalathil, Benedict Thirunelliparambil, Matthew Poothurail, Mathew Maplet) winning the $200 prize and the second place team (Ansel Mullappallil, Christian Chelackal, Abin Poothurail, Nathan Puramadathil, Jacob Ottathycal) winning the $100 prize. Also, a huge thanks goes out to our sponsors: Joycemon & Sonu Puthenpurayil, Joby & Manjiri Thekkunilkunnathil, Maneesh & Reenu Kaimulayil, Anish & Carol Chittalakattu, Febin & Jeena Mattathil, and Vipin & Bini Chalungal. We were blown away by the success of this event and are so excited to host it again next summer! KCYL also hosted its very first Color Wars picnic on August 14th. It was a great day filled with fun, games, and great food for the Knanaya youth of Chicago before the next school year began. With Seniors wearing orange, Juniors wearing blue, Sophomores wearing green, and Freshman wearing Red, it was great to see each grade compete against each other in a series of games, such as volleyball, football, tug of war, etc. We want to thank the 70+ kids in total who attended and made it a success! In addition, KCYL Chicago provided opportunities for members to interact even when they were stuck at home with its National 2K21 Tournament in May. About 50 participants nationwide competed against each other online playing the basketball video game, NBA 2K21. The tournament included both XBOX and PlayStation divisions with $300 First Place and $100 Runner-Up prizes for each. We would like to sincerely thank Nimmy Thuruthuvelil and Pravasi Cart, our first and second place sponsors, for their support with this event. Additionally, a huge thanks to KCYLNA and all the local KCYL boards across the country for their help in promoting the event. KCYL members volunteered to support the KCS Kna Escape 2021 kids summer camp as well. Over the 3 days of the camp, there were around 30 KCYL volunteers. We helped coordinate many activities and made sure that the kids enjoyed their time at the camp. We were very happy to help out KCS with this great initiative! Lastly, KCYL wanted to recognize all the hard work and dedication that our high school graduates put in toward the next chapter of their life. This year, 14 Seniors from Sacred Heart Church, 53 seniors from St. Mary’s Church, and many other Knanaya students from all over Chicagoland graduated and committed to college! We have also put together a list below of graduates with their majors/colleges for younger KCYL members going through the college admission process to see. This way, they can network with Knanaya youth that are attending the schools or programs they are applying to and reach out with questions. Also, if any high school graduates did not get a chance to put their information in the spreadsheet, please contact the KCYL Board and we will be happy to add them on.
