InDesign Portfolio Preyanshu Pardhi A/3216/2018 II Year IV Semester 2-B
Overview The idea of this residential design exercise was to apprehend the basic principles and ethics of designing habitable spaces for a family; for them to live here and make it there home. This also involved a detailed understanding of the needs of each resident of the house based on their likings, interests, hobbies and loathings, their daily routine and also their chores or the contribution to the family as one of its members. Here, the humble dwelling designed for Dr. ShriKrishna Yesikar, the client and his family is designed in the city of Bhopal on the sloping property of the Doctors’ Quarters of the Gandhi Medical College and Hamidiya Hospital in the city’s Kohefiza neighbourhood. This piece of land falls within the campus of the college and is immediately surrounded by homes of other Doctor families, a staff and workers’ hostel and a Nurses’ hostel. The property being considered for the dwelling lies at one end of the medical camps and spans over 1000sq. m. while the other extent of the medical campus ends at the Sultania Hamidiya main road. The renowned Taj-Ul-Masjid with its Chowk bazaar is located not close to the site, opposite to the Sultania road. The medical college campus stays within the demolished walls of the fort of Bhopal; the walls also behaving as a boundary wall to the property on its southern side. 2

The sloping landscape that leads to the V.I.P. road, main road towards the south of the site is composed of large and heavy rocks and boulders that create an sense of seating on the inclination and provide a resting surface. This idea of a multiple surfaces coming together at various levels to form a seating experience on a slope was translated into a number of planes arranged at different heights which ultimately create interesting volumes and in turn provide habitable spaces. The form of the dwelling is partially evolved from the Venturi tube which is supports the Bernoulli’s Principle. According to the principle which explained through the Venturi tube, the velocity of air increases as the volume of the tube decreases. The pre- existing slope on the site is used to incorporate the idea of a modified Venturi tube fit onto the sie in the form of an open house, only to allow proper, better and continuous ventilation throughout the house. Speaking of a medical practictioner’s home, a medicla consideration has also been made while going about the space planning. The spine plays an importnt role in supporting the framework and the systems of the human body while connecting the body’s part to one another physically, or by means of the nervous system. Similar comprehension can be seen in the dweeling where the staircase acts as the main spine of the house, creating a ppath of transition from one space to the other and connecting spaces to one another. 12
Preyanshu Pardhi All three ideas involved in the thought process gave rise to this Email address: exiting form; having an interesting preyanshu3216arch18@ play of planes, a stark change of heights and volumes without actually spa.ac.in causing any hinderence to the ceiling and a central spine generating a relationship, a bond between the spaces themselves which also leads to harmony. Such an extremely simple element thus repeats itself and also creates and visual balance within leading to subtly spliting the spaces as public, semi public and private inside a house. 13
