PREFACE The latest National Curriculum Framework (NCF), furthering 1 the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, provides a comprehensive framework for the holistic 5 2 development of students. Reading the Text  There was an old water bearer. She carried two pots to a stream to fetch water every day. She carried them on two ends of a stick, hung across her back. One pot was cracked, while the stream fetch water bearer other was perfect. The cracked pot felt sad as half the water leaked out of it. It felt that it was not doing its work properly. After two years, the cracked pot could not stop itself and spoke to the old woman. ‘I am ashamed of myself!’ it said. leaked The old woman was surprised to hear this and asked the pot, ‘What are you ashamed of?’ ‘I do not serve you well. I only do half of my job. I am sure that your master is unhappy with you. You cannot bring back two full pots of water because of me. You should throw me away.’ T he old woman listened silently. ‘Have you noticed your side of the path while returning home every day?’ she asked after a while. ‘You should take a look when we return tomorrow.’ The next morning, as they returned from the stream, the cracked pot blaming was surprised. It saw the most beautiful and colourful flowers on its side of the path. It realised that it had not noticed these wonderful flowers. It was always busy feeling unhappy and blaming itself. The old woman said, ‘Did you notice that there are flowers only on your side? That is because I knew you were cracked. So, I planted seeds on your side of the path. You have been watering the plants every day. I collect these flowers scent and use them to decorate my master’s house. The master looks at these flowers and smells their scent. Androcles and the Lion is a well-known fable. Read to find out how a random act of kindness of a slave towards a lion saves his life on another occasion. Reading the Text Characters: Lion Androcles, a slave Master, a rich man in Rome who owned many slaves Warden Soldiers and guards Emperor Scene 1: Forest Setting: A forest. There is a big rock that Androcles can sit on. Androcles enters the stage, rushing and panting. He stops at the middle and bends forward, as if trying to catch his breath. He is carrying a water jug. Lion is lying down at the edge of the stage. Narrator: You’re about to meet our hero, the slave Androcles. (points to Androcles) Life as a slave in ancient Rome was usually very difficult. And he lived under one of the cruellest masters in all the city. Androcles: (pants, out of breath) I think I’m in the woods now. I don’t have to clean and wash and work the whole day in my master’s house. This rock looks very comfortable for me. (drinks from his water jug). Ah, it’s good to be free. (tries to sit comfortably on the rock) Lion: Grrrrr Androcles: Oh! It’s a huge lion. I can’t run away. I’m very, very tired. (Lion roars louder and louder. After some time, it starts sobbing and moaning.) Lion: When I ran through the thorn bushes, I got hurt in my front paw. It’s paining a lot. (makes a pleading noise and nods at Androcles) Lion: (thrusts out paw for Androcles to see) Grrrrr! Androcles: Oh, your paw looks really sore! Androcles: All right, all right! Maybe I can help you after all. (Lion settles down and makes a whimpering sound, then thrusts out paw to Androcles.) Androcles: Hold still. (Androcles moves towards Lion and grabs the thorn with two hands) I am going to pull it out now. Okay. One, two, three – here we GO! (Androcles pulls back and pulls the thorn out of Lion’s paw. Lion moans, then roars loudly.) Lion: (howls in pain) OWW! Androcles: Settle down. I still have to clean your wound. I’ll just cover it with some leaves for now and tie them to stop the bleeding. I’ll get some water to wash it clean. There, you might as well rest. (Androcles takes a leaf and wraps it around the lion’s paw.) Lion: (whimpers and then starts snoring loudly) Androcles: Yes, that’s good. Get some sleep. I’ll be back in a few minutes with the water. (Androcles exits.) Scene 2: Prison Setting: A Roman prison scene. Androcles is behind the prison bars. Roman soldiers stand guard. Master stands in front of the prison bars angrily, with his hands on his hips. Narrator: While the lion got better, Roman soldiers found Androcles hiding in the forest. They caught him and put him inside a prison. Master: (to Androcles, who is behind bars) Hah! You thought you could run away from me? You ungrateful wretch! See what I will do to you. You ran away! And after I gave you food and a place to live. For free! Why did you run away? Androcles: Every day I was beaten to my bones. I was often starved all day long! I’m a human being. I don’t want to be your slave, ever! Warden: (to audience, pointing to Androcles) Only a few are able to actually escape from their masters. Androcles: No, not that! The lions? Have pity on me! Don’t throw me to the lions! Warden: (smiles wickedly and opens the prison bars) Take him to the Colosseum. (Roman soldiers take Androcles out of the prison bars.) Scene 3: Colosseum Setting: A Colosseum scene. Crowd whispers to one another, excitedly. To the side of the stage is a cage door. Lion is behind the cage door. Emperor: (to audience) Gentlemen! (Crowd members become silent.) Welcome all, to my glorious Colosseum! What a show we have for you tonight! An escaped slave will face justice at the cruel jaws of a hungry lion. Bring out the slave! (Androcles is brought into the arena by Roman soldiers. Androcles stands waiting at the right-hand corner of the stage, shaking and afraid, holding only a small spear in his right hand.) Androcles: (clenching his eyes shut) Oh Gods! Please have mercy on me! Emperor: (shouts) Release the beast! (Soldier opens the cage door. Lion comes out. Lion stretches its legs slowly and bounces towards Androcles.) Lion: (Roars ferociously and charges up to Androcles but stops when it gets close. Sniffs to the right and left. Lion stares at Androcles with a puzzled look on his face.) Lion: (purrs gently, pretends to lick Androcles) Prrrr Androcles: Wait, it’s YOU? My lion friend from the woods? With the thorn? Lion: (thrusts out his paw for Androcles to see) Emperor: What is happening? (points to Androcles) You! What have you done? Narrator: Androcles explained to the Emperor how he had pulled the thorn out of the lion’s paw in the forest. And how he and the lion had taken care of each other when they lived together in the cave. Emperor: Quite a story. (in a loud, deep voice) Subjects, we have seen an unusual turn of events today. Reading the Text The Singh family is on their summer vacation. They are visiting the Ramgarh fort in Chandigarh. It was a steep and long climb to the fort. ‘Come on children, we are almost there’, called Mummy to Noor and Aman. steep ‘Why is the road like this?’ asked Aman as he huffed and puffed. ‘The road was made in such a way that the huffed and puffed elephants could only climb the hill slowly. It also prevented the elephants from breaking the main gate and entering the fort’, explained Daddy. ‘Amazing’, said Noor. ‘Tell us more about Ramgarh fort’, said the children. wealth ‘In olden times, it was a very wealthy kingdom. whispers Once, there were whispers that an attack was being planned.
