When the subject and the object refer to the same person or animal, a reflexive pronoun is used. In a reflexive pronoun the subject is the receiver of the action. • He treated himself to a movie. • They baked a cake for themselves. • I cut myself. When reflexive pronouns are used to put emphasis on the subject, they are called emphatic pronouns. • She can complete the project by herself. • Gaurav can fix the toy by himself. In the above sentences the reflexive pronouns ‘herself’ and ‘himself’ refer to the subjects of these sentences. Here are the subject and object pronouns and the reflexive pronouns used for them.
