B C A 2 Vocabulary Connectors Connectors, also called sentence connectors or transition words, are used to show relationships between ideas in the different sentences in a paragraph. Often, if sentences are short, they come after a semicolon (;). Here is a list of connectors along with their purposes. Purpose Connector to express similarity, agreement or addition first; second; third; in the first place; besides; moreover; to express opposition or as well as; afterwards; so; as well contradiction but; however; although; instead; whereas; despite; in to express purpose spite of; otherwise; rather; besides; nor, give; not; after; to express effect or result neither-nor if; when; because of; since; in order to for; thus; hence; for this reason; therefore; accordingly Note: 1) ‘In spite of’ and ‘despite’ mean the same and are used to express contrast between two things. Here are a few points to remember about their usage: • We use both these words with nouns. Example: She had fun despite / in spite of the bad weather. • ‘In spite of’ is written as three separate words. We never use ‘of’ with ‘despite’. • We never use ‘that’ after ‘in spite of’ or ‘despite’. 2) The spelling difference between ‘beside’ and ‘besides’ is a little one: the ‘-s’ at the end. However, the two mean very different things. ‘Beside’ with no ‘s’ is a preposition. Example: I am sitting beside him. (meaning ‘next to’ or ‘near’) ‘Besides’ with the ‘s’ means ‘other than’ or ‘except’. Example: I am not interested in the movie. Remember: • A transitive verb has an object. It asks the questions ‘what’ or ‘whom’. • An intransitive verb, on the other hand, does not require an object to complete its meaning. 4 Language in Use Irregular plurals The paragraph has many regular and irregular plurals. Can you underline them? The Story of Jim Once upon a time, there lived a baker named Jim. He baked delicious bread and cakes. His garlic bread was famous across many cities. Everyone loved Jim’s bread. They came from far and wide to buy loaves of bread from him. The rich and the famous came in their grand coaches just to taste his bakery items. He gave his customers candies and balloons. Other bakers wondered why Jim’s garlic bread tasted so yummy. 'Had he attended some secret baking classes?'; 'Did he use some special dishes, spoons and knives?' Nobody knew for sure. Everyone had seen two colourful boxes on the top shelves of Jim’s shop. They tried to guess what was inside them. Perhaps they contained the secret recipes! Days rolled into months and months into years. People forgot all about the boxes. Many years later, after Jim’s death, the colourful boxes were finally opened. Two small chits were found, one in each box. They read ‘Bake with love’ and ‘Bake slowly and happily’. People remembered kind Jim, and there were echoes of 'Long live Jim! We love you Jim!' in the streets. Let’s revise some rules for forming irregular plurals. Rule 1: To form the plurals of words that end in ‘-x’, ‘-o’, ‘-s’, ‘-ch’ ‘-sh’ and ‘-ss’, add ‘-es’ to the ends of the words. Examples: taxes, buffaloes, lenses, churches, bushes, kisses Rule 2: To form the plurals of words that end in a consonant plus ‘-y’, drop the ‘y’ and add ‘-ies’. Examples: families, parties, diaries, enemies Rule 3: To form the plurals of words that end in ‘-f’ or ‘-fe’, change ‘-f’ or ‘-fe’ to ‘-ve’ and then add ‘-s’. Examples: knives, thieves Remember: 1) A few words that end in '-f' or '-fe' form their plural forms by simply adding '-s'. Examples: chiefs, roofs, cliffs 2) A few words do not have separate plural forms. The same word denotes singular and plural. Examples: sheep, deer, aircraft Irregular plurals without rules Some words form their plurals in different ways. They do not follow any of the above rules. Types of sentences  Declarative sentence: It makes a statement and ends with a full stop (.). Example: We are going to watch a movie.
