Demonstrative adjectives vs. demonstrative pronouns You have learnt that ‘this’, ‘that’, ‘these’ and ‘those’ are also demonstrative pronouns. However, their usage in sentences is different from that of demonstrative adjectives. Remember: Pronouns replace nouns, but they do not describe or add meaning to them. On the other hand, adjectives describe nouns or add meaning to them. A demonstrative adjective is followed by a noun. Demonstrative pronouns Demonstrative adjectives This is very yummy. Here is how you can make sentences in the present tense negative. Simple present tense • Use ‘do not’ (don’t) and ‘does not’ (doesn’t) before the main verb. Example: Meena does not know how to swim. Present continuous tense • Add ‘not’ after ‘is’, ‘are’ and ‘am’. (isn’t, aren’t) Example: The students are not coming today. Present perfect tense • Add ‘not’ after 'has'/'have'. (hasn’t/haven’t) Example: Lyra hasn't finished her test yet. Remember: You can convert a negative sentence into a positive one in two ways. • Remove negative words like ‘no’, ‘not’, ‘does not’ and ‘do not’. The sentence will then have the opposite meaning. Example: 'I do not have your book' becomes 'I have your book'. • Remove the negative words like ‘no’, ‘not’, ‘does not’ and ‘do not’. Also, convert the verb to its opposite form so that the sentence means the same. Example: 'You did not understand what I said' becomes 'You misunderstood what I said'.
