Therefore, it can be used with both singular and plural nouns or pronouns. • The emperor and his courtiers clapped and cheered Birbal. A past tense verb helps us talk about completed or finished past actions or events which regularly took place in the past. • Birbal saved the old man’s life with a simple trick. • Birbal attended Akbar’s court every day. If a verb ends in -e, you add -d. agree → agreed like → liked escape → escaped If a verb ends in a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled before -ed. stop → stopped plan → planned If a verb ends in consonant and -y, you remove the y and add -ied. try → tried carry → carried But if the word ends in a vowel and -y, you add -ed. play → played enjoy → enjoyed Tree Witness 45 Ascend G3 English MCB Part 1.indb 45 7/19/2023 7:08:22 PM

Ron studies in a school in Ooty. Read this description where he is talking about his grandfather’s time. This is my grandpa’s village in 1952. There wasn’t a cinema or a theatre in the village. It was too small. There were no air conditioners, but the weather was always nice. There weren’t too many cars even in the town next to it, but people had bicycles. There wasn’t an airport and there weren’t any planes in the sky. People didn’t have computers or email. They listened to music on the radio and there were village concerts during Ram Leela or Ratha Yatra. Only a few houses had electric lights, but almost all of them had candles. People had coal ovens at home and they didn’t have gas cylinders. There were no TV sets, but most people read newspapers. Grandpa had a lot of friends there and it was a really nice place. 2. 7 The Peddler's Dream Warm Up Talk to your partner about a dream you had. You can discuss: a) Did it ever come true? b) Who did you see in your dream? c) Why do you think you had that dream? Reading Long ago in a village in Norfolk lived a poor peddler named John Chapman. One night, John dreamed that he would hear very joyful news if he went to stand on London Bridge. The next morning John remembered his dream, but he thought, “This dream cannot possibly come true.” That night and the following night, John had the same dream again. At last he decided to go to London Bridge and see what might happen. John Chapman walked all the way to London. He stood on London Bridge for two or three days, looking around and waiting to hear some good news. A shopkeeper noticed him standing there day after day. Finally, he went over to talk to John. 50 7/19/2023 7:08:28 PM Ascend G3 English MCB Part 1.indb 50
“I see that you are not begging or selling anything,” the shopkeeper said. “What are you doing? Why are you here?” “I dreamed that I would hear joyful news on London Bridge,” John said honestly. The shopkeeper laughed, “What a fool you are! I can’t believe you travelled here and wasted these days standing around, all because of a dream. I would never do such a thing.” “In fact,” the shopkeeper continued, “last night I dreamed that I was in a village in Norfolk, a place I have never been before. In my dream, I went to an orchard behind a peddler’s house and dug under a huge oak tree. There I found a great treasure. But do you think I am foolish enough to travel to that village in Norfolk, just because of a dream?” The shopkeeper laughed again. “No, I am too wise for that. Take my advice and go home. Don’t waste any more time standing on this bridge,’’ the shopkeeper added. John thought to himself, “I will not give up just because this shopkeeper is telling me to.” He listened quietly and then thought, “This shopkeeper’s dream must be the good news I’ve been waiting for! I will now hurry home.” At home in his village in Norfolk, he began to dig under a huge oak tree in the orchard behind his house. Soon his shovel hit a box. He pulled it up and opened it to find a great treasure of gold coins. On the lid of the box was a Latin inscription. John could not read Latin, so he cleverly placed the lid in his window. Soon he heard two passing schoolboys translate its message into English: “Under me does lie, another richer far than I.” Filled with excitement, John returned to the orchard and the hole where he had found the box. He dug deeper and deeper until he uncovered a larger box filled with an even bigger treasure. The Peddler’s Dream 51 Ascend G3 English MCB Part 1.indb 51 7/19/2023 7:08:29 PM
At that time the village church was falling down and in great need of repair. The good peddler used his new wealth to restore it. He got workers and bought all the things they needed. Soon the church was in glorious condition, and the entire village benefited from John Chapman’s good fortune. To this day, you may find in the village church a wooden carving of John Chapman, with his peddler’s pack on his back and his dog at his heels. His picture is also found on windows and walls throughout the village, so that the people may never forget the wisdom of a simple peddler who really did follow his dream.
