I Read Little Ahona was three years old. One day, she was sitting near the window and looking outside. It was raining. All the flowers and grass looked fresh and green. She asked her father, ‘Papa, why does it rain?’ Papa put aside his newspaper and said, ‘When it is hot, vapour water goes up in the air as vapour and collects in the sky and becomes clouds. When the clouds become too heavy, it starts to rain.’ Ahona was not happy with this reply. ‘I don’t understand!’ she said. ‘You will understand when you grow up’, said Papa. Then, he went back to reading his newspaper. Ahona then went to her mother. ‘Mummy, why does it rain?’ trunk she asked. Mummy thought for a while and answered, ‘You know that gods live up in the sky. There they have a big, black elephant. This elephant fills his trunk with water from the sea and lifts it up. When his trunk is full of water, the elephant finds out where the water is needed. He points his trunk there and blows out all the water. There is a shower of rain in that place.’ Ahona was very happy with this reply. ‘Thank you, Mummy! I understand this. Connect the Dots Maths Fun During the rainy season, it rained for 3 hours every day for a week. For how many hours did it rain during the week? I Read It is a bright and beautiful morning. Chaand has taken his sheep to graze in the field. ‘Can you help me?’ Chaand hears a voice. He looks graze around. He is surprised to see a man with a crown on his head. ‘Are you the great King Ashoka?’, asks Chaand. ‘Yes, I am’, answers the man. ‘How do you know me?’ ‘Everybody knows you’, says Chaand. ‘But you had died many years ago. Then how can I see you?’ King Ashoka tells Chaand that he is visiting the Earth as a ghost. ‘Please don’t be scared’, says Ashoka. ghost The king asks Chaand to show him the way to the forest. Chaand agrees. On the way, King Ashoka tells Chaand many stories about his life. He describes how he once saved himself from a lion with just a wooden rod. ‘You must have felt very brave and strong after saving yourself from the lion’, says Chaand. ‘I wish I could be a king like you.’ King Ashoka says, ‘When I was young, I used to think that the one who wins a fight is brave. One day, I learned that this is not true. Weak people fight wars. Strong people live in love and peace. We cannot feel happy by hurting others. We can win and feel happy only by loving others. So, I stopped fighting wars.’ Chaand thinks about it. The king is right. Chaand agrees that he always feels bad after fighting even if he wins. Suddenly, Chaand wakes up and realises that it was a dream. But, he promises himself that he will not fight; he will become a real king. I Am the King 53
