Reflexive pronouns Sometimes, the subject and the object of a sentence are the same. Gaurav can fix the toy She can complete the They cooked the meal himself. project herself. themselves. Such sentences use reflexive pronouns (himself, herself, themselves) to refer to the subject (noun or pronoun). Observe carefully: • Gaurav can fix the toy truck himself. ‘Gaurav’ is both the subject and the object of this sentence. Reflexive pronoun ‘himself’ refers to ‘Gaurav’. • S imilarly, in the second sentence, reflexive pronoun ‘herself’ refers to the pronoun ‘she’. • Reflexive pronoun ‘themselves’ refers to the pronoun ‘they’ in the third sentence. Let us look at subject pronouns and the reflexive pronouns used for them. Remember: Singular reflexive pronouns are formed with ‘-self’ and plural with ‘- selves’. Look at and write the appropriate reflexive pronouns in the blanks. Remember: • Regular plurals are formed by adding an ‘-s’ to the end of words. Examples: car – cars, pen – pens • Some plurals are formed in different ways and not just by adding ‘-s’ at the end of words. Examples: brush – brushes, box – boxes • Some words remain the same in the singular and plural forms. Examples: sheep – sheep, deer – deer To form the plural of words that end in ‘-x’, ‘-o’, ‘-s’, ‘-ch’, ‘-sh’ and ‘-ss’ add ‘-es’ at the end.
