My friend but he/she does not My friend but he/she does not My friend but he/she does not Activity Dictionary work We find words in a dictionary by looking at the order of their first letters in the alphabet. For example: sad will come before tired But what happens when we have to look for zebra and zoo? We will look for the order of the second letters. So, zebra will come before zoo in a dictionary because e comes before o in the alphabet. Amy and the Robot 45 Ascend G2 English G&C Part 1.indb 45 7/19/2023 7:45:27 PM

5 The Clever Fox Reading Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby Brer Fox did not like Brer Rabbit at all. Brer Rabbit wanted to tell everyone what to do and how to do, and Brer Fox quite hated him for that. He wanted to teach the rabbit a lesson. He thought and he thought until he came up with a plan. He decided to make a tar baby! Tar is a thick and dark mixture and it is what we need to make good roads. Brer Fox went and got some tar and he mixed it with a few other things. Then he turned the sticky mixture he had got into the shape of a sweet little baby. Then he stuck a hat on the Tar Baby and sat her in the middle of the road. Brer Fox hid himself in the bushes near the road and he waited and waited for Brer Rabbit to come along. At long last, he saw Brer Rabbit coming up over the hill. As he reached the top, Brer Rabbit saw the little Tar Baby. Brer Rabbit was surprised. He stopped and stared at this strange creature. He had never seen anything like it before! “Good Morning,” said Brer Rabbit, doffing his hat. “Nice weather we’re having.” Chapter_5_The Clever Fox.indd 47 47 7/20/2023 10:39:18 AM

The Tar Baby said nothing. Brer Fox laid low and laughed and laughed. Brer Rabbit tried again. “And how are you feeling this fine day?” he asked. The Tar Baby said nothing. Brer Rabbit was mad with anger. He struck the little baby with two of his paws. The paws got stuck. They sank deep into the Tar Baby. Brer Rabbit was so furious that he used his other paws to shake it up. Those paws got stuck as well. Brer Rabbit tried pushing the little baby out, and he was completely covered with tar. He got stuck with this little Tar Baby and was not able to move! Brer Fox leapt out of the bushes and walked over to Brer Rabbit. “Well, well, what have we here?” he asked, grinning a nasty grin. “I’ve got you this time, Brer Rabbit,” said Brer Fox, jumping up and shaking off the dust. “Now I wonder what I should do with you?” 48 The Clever Fox Ascend G2 English G&C Part 1.indb 48 7/19/2023 7:45:28 PM

“Kill me, kick me, throw me to the tiger, if you will. But, please do not throw me to the thorny bushes down the hill,” cried the rabbit. Grabbing up the tar-covered rabbit, Brer Fox swung him around and around and then flung him head over heels into the thorny bushes. Brer Rabbit fell into the thorny bushes with a crash and a mighty thump. Then there was silence. Brer Fox cocked one ear towards the thorny bushes, hoping to hear whimpers of pain. But he heard nothing. Brer Fox cocked the other ear towards the bed of thorny bushes, listening for Brer Rabbit’s cries of pan. He heard nothing. Then Brer Fox heard someone calling his name. He turned around and looked up the hill. Brer Rabbit was sitting on a log combing the thorns on the tar out of his fur with a wood chip and looking super cool. “I grew up in those thorny bushes, Brer Fox,” he called. “Born and raised in the thorny bushes. The thorns got stuck in the black paste you trapped me with. So, when I pull thorns out, the tar comes off!” Brer Bear who was passing by started laughing too! And Brer Rabbit skipped away as merry as a cricket while Brer Fox clasped his teeth in anger and went home. The Clever Fox 49 Ascend G2 English G&C Part 1.indb 49 7/19/2023 7:45:28 PM
