1 Friends Forever Reading Very often, friends rescue us from tricky situations and help us develop qualities that we are not even aware of. Here is a short story about friendship between two creatures of the deep – an octopus and a small fish. Friendship to the Rescue Once upon a time there was a lonely octopus. He was too shy to make friends although he wanted to, very much. He hardly spoke to the other animals of the sea. One day, the octopus tried to catch a very slimy oyster who slipped away from him each time. Within no time, he had twisted himself into a huge knot and could hardly move. The more he tried to undo the knot, the more he got entangled in it. He was ashamed of his situation. Finally, he had to ask for help from the passing fish. Most of the fish darted about in the sea, not paying much attention to him. But one very kind little fish offered to help to untie all those knots on his body. The octopus felt very thankful when he was finally set free, but he was so shy that he didn’t dare talk to the fish and make friends with the small fish. He simply thanked the fish and went off on his way. Later, the octopus was up worrying the whole night, thinking that he missed a chance of being friends with the very kind little fish. Ascend G3 English G&C Part 1.indb 1 1 8/2/2023 4:41:26 PM
A few days later, the octopus was resting up between a few rocks when he noticed that everyone around was moving past him in a hurry. He looked into the distance and saw a very big fish coming over to feed in that area. The octopus disappeared behind the rocks. Then, peeping from his hiding place, he saw that a big fish was chasing the kind little fish who had helped untie him. That little fish was in trouble and needed help right away, but the big fish looked so scary that no one dared to lend a helping hand. The octopus, remembering how the little fish had helped him, felt that he had to do whatever he could to help him out. Soon the octopus came up to the big fish and shot out the biggest jet of ink of his life. He then grabbed the little fish and swam off to hide him between the rocks. The rescue happened so quickly that the big fish could not do anything. Soon, the big fish began feeling a terrible itch. He felt it first near its mouth, and then in his fins, and then all over his body. The octopus’s poisonous dark ink had given him a terrible allergy! So the big fish swam away, feeling awfully sick. As soon as he was gone, the other fish who had also hidden in the rocks congratulated the octopus for his bravery. The other fish discovered how helpful and friendly the shy octopus really was, and everyone around was happy to be the friend of such a brave and heroic octopus. The small fish became his best friend for life! 2 Friends Forever Ascend G3 English G&C Part 1.indb 2 8/2/2023 4:41:26 PM

Write It Sometimes animals can be your best friends and companions. We learnt about the use of topic sentences to write paragraphs. Here we will write about our clever animal friends using topic sentences in our paragraphs. Meet the octopus: the intelligent animal Octopuses are unusual and interesting creatures. They look strange because they have eight legs and because they have a soft body. They do not have backbones. Octopuses are one of the most intelligent animals. They can open jars and bottles to get food. Parts of an octopus’s brain are in its legs so its legs can actually think! Octopuses can remember things. When an octopus has solved a problem once, it remembers and does the same thing another day. They can remember different shapes and patterns. We know this because scientists have studied octopuses for a long time. We use topic sentences to introduce information in a piece of writing. Topic sentences go at the beginning of a paragraph. Examples: • Octopuses are one of the most intelligent animals. • Octopuses can remember things. Now write about blue whales. Use the topic sentences (a to c) and the notes in the box. Remember to begin your sentences with a capital letter and end with a full stop. a. Blue whales are the biggest animals in the world. b. They live in small groups. c. They are not dangerous to humans. 8 Friends Forever Ascend G3 English G&C Part 1.indb 8 8/2/2023 4:41:28 PM

3 James and the Giant Peach Reading Trees have a life of their own. They are home to many living creatures. Here is a story about why we should not cut down trees. The Fruit Tree An old apple tree grew in a farmer’s garden. It was too old to bear fruit. However, it provided homes to the sparrows, grasshoppers, and squirrels in the neighbourhood. The farmer wanted to get rid of the tree because he felt it was useless. He felt that the wood from the tree could be used to make some furniture that he needed. He took a sharp axe and tried to cut the old tree. The animals and insects that lived on the tree were disturbed and worried. The grasshoppers, the sparrows, and the squirrels rushed out of their living places and gathered around the farmer. “Please, Sir,” they begged him. “Do not cut this tree. It has life and it is our only home.” But the farmer was determined to cut down the tree and struck even harder at the roots. “We will sing to you in the afternoons. It would lighten your burden,” said the sparrows. 22 8/2/2023 4:41:37 PM Ascend G3 English G&C Part 1.indb 22
But the farmer did not want to listen to their suggestions. He continued his task with great concentration. As he cut through the roots, something in the hollow of the tree caught his attention. A beehive. The beehive was oozing with honey. “Heavenly!” cried the farmer, tasting the honey. Now the farmer knew that the tree was not useless after all. Beehives were to be found in the hollows of the tree. And if he took away the honey now, the bees would make more. If he removed one beehive, the hardworking bees would still make more honey. The farmer told the creatures of the tree that he was not going to cut the tree after all! The sparrows, grasshoppers, and squirrels celebrated. What a delight that the farmer had changed his mind about cutting the tree! The tree would always be there for them to live in. 5 The Peddler’s Dream Reading There are many ways to make a wish. Some people make wishes by throwing a coin into a fountain, and some wish on the biggest star in the sky. They call it the wishing star. Wishing on a shooting star is one of the most common ways people try to make their dreams come true. The Dream Star There was once a girl who loved to dream! She would spend her time wishing upon stars and dreaming of the future. In her dreams she would imagine great happiness and hope. Her dreams were a way for her to become special. Every time she dreamt, she felt a lot better. And feeling better made her to dream even more! Time passed and the little girl continued to wish on stars and wait for the moment when one day, her dreams would come true. While she spent her time dreaming, she missed some real chances. One night when the sky was lit up with twinkling stars, she saw the most wonderful sight! There was a little boy hanging by a rope from a bright star. “Are you safe?” Ascend G3 English G&C Part 1.indb 43 43 8/2/2023 4:41:46 PM
The little boy flashed her a smile and held on to the rope for dear life. “What are you trying to do?” the little girl asked in surprise. “I am trying to make my dream come true by catching my wishing star.” The boy slowly climbed the rope towards his wishing star, passing the little girl on his way up. The sky was bright with all the stars that the little girl had wished on. There were so many of them that she could not count them. Never had one of these stars ever fallen into her lap. None of her hopeful dreams had come true and she wondered when this would happen. This time she chose a new star to make a new wish. She threw a rope up to her chosen star. She wrapped it around her star and climbed up clung onto it tightly. Finally, she was able to touch her star. There was about to be a big change in the little girl’s life. She had finally captured her dream! 44 The Peddler’s Dream Ascend G3 English G&C Part 1.indb 44 8/2/2023 4:41:47 PM
