Inside the Lab Activity 1: Disease Prevention Charades Make sure you do these activities only with the help of a teacher or an adult. Let us learn some methods to prevent diseases by playing a fun-filled game. You will need: chart paper, marker, paper box, marksheet to mark the scores and a pair of scissors. You need to: a) divide the class into two teams – team A and team B. b) let both teams make disease prevention cards. c) cut out small cards from the chart paper. d) write various methods of prevention to keep us safe from diseases. e) put the cards inside the paper box and shuffle. f) ask one learner from team B to pick a card. The learner should then act out the method of prevention mentioned in the card without using any words. For enacting one card, give a time limit of 2 minutes. g) ask the other learners from team B to guess what method of prevention is being enacted. h) ask team A to check the time taken and write the scores on the marksheet. i) reverse the roles. Now, team A will enact and team B will record the time. PNC_G5_SCI_T2_WB_QC4.indb 29 29 12-Sep-19 5:51:23 PM
1) Discuss some preventive measures to overcome diseases. Ans. __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ Activity 2: Seed Germination We have learnt that seeds need moisture, air and the right amount of warmth to germinate and grow. Let us do a seed germination activity to find out whether the seeds need all these to germinate or not. You will need: bean seeds (15–20 per bowl), five clean and empty beakers (one for each condition), paper towels, water to wet the towels and masking tape to label the beakers. You need to: a) keep the seeds in the following conditions. How where beaker 1 Place the seeds on a wet paper towel. in air and light beaker 2 Place dry seeds. in air and light beaker 3 Pour water in the beaker. Put seeds in the water. in air and light beaker 4 Place the seeds on a wet paper towel. in a dark place beaker 5 Place the seeds on a wet paper towel. in a refrigerator 30 12-Sep-19 5:51:25 PM PNC_G5_SCI_T2_WB_QC4.indb 30
b) make predictions about what will happen. Note them down in your observation sheet. c) have a look at the beakers 7 to 10 days later. Note down your results in the observation table given below. The seeds of which beaker have germinated? Which have not? Note: • The seeds in the water will need to have their water changed regularly, so that mould growth does not take place. • Check once a day that the paper towel is wet. Observation table: Experiment Conditions Prediction Actual Result Actual Result number after ____ days after ____ days PNC_G5_SCI_T2_WB_QC4.indb 31 31 12-Sep-19 5:51:25 PM

Term Project Salt from Seawater Let us see how we get salt from seawater due to the changing forms of water. You will need: salt, some tap water, a saucepan, a spoon, a stove, a tray seawater collected in ponds and a black plastic sheet. You need to: a) add two cups of water to the pan. Place it on the stove. Let the water boil. b) add salt to the hot water in the pan. Mix it well with a spoon. Salt dissolves faster in hot water. Continue adding salt until it stops dissolving in the hot water. Eventually, you will reach a point at which the salt will not dissolve anymore, no matter how hot the water is. When you reach that point, turn the stove off and let the water cool slightly. c) spread the black plastic sheet inside the tray. d) pour the water from the pan into the tray. e) keep the tray out in the Sun for two days. (The black plastic paper and tray location should be chosen wisely to protect the setup from any external damage.) The water will change into water vapour. This will leave behind crystals of salt in the tray. They are small and shiny. Salt is prepared from seawater in a similar way. Seawater changes into water vapour during summer, leaving behind salt.
