8 The Cat on the Dovrefell Warm Up In groups of four, answer the following questions. a) Who is your favourite cartoon bear character? Talk about it. b) How is a cat different from a bear? Reading Once upon a time, there was a man in Norway who caught a great bear. He decided that he would give the bear to the King of Denmark. Now, it so fell out that on his journey he came to that part of Norway called the Dovrefell on Christmas Eve. Stopping at a cottage where a man named Halvor lived, he asked if he and his bear could stay the night. “Heaven help me if what I say isn’t true!” said Halvor. “We can’t let anyone stay tonight. Every Christmas Eve such a pack of Trolls comes down upon us that we are forced to flee. We haven’t so much as a roof over our own heads, to say nothing of lending one to anyone else.” “Oh?” said the man. “If that’s all it is, you can very well lend me your house. My bear can lie under the stove and I can sleep in the side room.” Well, the man begged so hard that, at last, he was allowed to stay there. All the people of the house soon left. But before they went, everything was got ready for the Trolls. The tables were laid with rice porridge, boiled fish, sausages, and all else that was good, just as for any grand feast. 1 Ascend G3 English MCB Part 2.indb 1 7/20/2023 12:59:28 PM

So, when everything was ready, down came the Trolls. Some were great, and some were small. Some had long tails, and some had no tails at all. And some had long, long noses. They ate and drank everything. Then, one of the little Trolls caught sight of the bear under the stove. He took a piece of sausage and stuck it on a fork. Then he went and poked the sausage up against the bear’s nose, screaming, “Kitty, will you have some sausage?” The bear rose up, gave a terrible growl, and chased the whole pack of Trolls, both great and small, out the door. The next year, Halvor was out in the woods on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. He was cutting wood before the holidays, for he thought the Trolls would come again. While he was hard at work, he heard a voice in the woods calling out: “Halvor! Halvor!” “Well,” said Halvor, “here I am.” “Have you got your big cat with you still?” “Yes, that I have,” said Halvor. “She’s lying at home under the stove. And what’s more, she now has seven kittens, far bigger and fiercer than she is herself.” “Oh, then, we’ll never come to see you again,” cried out the Troll in the woods. And he kept his word. Ever since that time, the Trolls have never eaten their Christmas dinner with Halvor on the Dovrefell. 2 The Cat on the Dovrefell Ascend G3 English MCB Part 2.indb 2 7/20/2023 12:59:31 PM

10 Androcles and the Lion Warm Up An act of good deed is always rewarded. Look at the pictures and describe them. Have you done any such good deeds? Tell your friends in class about your good deed and how you felt after doing it. Reading Androcles and the Lion is a well-known fable. Read to find out how a random act of kindness of a slave towards a lion saves his life on another occasion. Characters: Lion Androcles, a slave Master, a rich man in Rome who owned many slaves Warden Soldiers and guards Emperor 13 Ascend G3 English MCB Part 2.indb 13 7/20/2023 12:59:50 PM

Scene 1: Forest Setting: A forest. There is a big rock that Androcles can sit on. Androcles enters the stage, rushing and panting. He stops at the middle and bends forward, as if trying to catch his breath. He is carrying a water jug. Lion is lying down at the edge of the stage. Narrator: You’re about to meet our hero, the slave Androcles. (points to Androcles) Life as a slave in ancient Rome was usually very difficult. And he lived under one of the cruellest masters in all the city. Androcles: (pants, out of breath) I think I’m in the woods now. I don’t have to clean and wash and work the whole day in my master’s house. This rock looks very comfortable for me. (drinks from his water jug). Ah, it’s good to be free. (tries to sit comfortably on the rock) Lion: Grrrrr Androcles: Oh! It’s a huge lion. I can’t run away. I’m very, very tired. (Lion roars louder and louder. After some time, it starts sobbing and moaning.) Lion: When I ran through the thorn bushes, I got hurt in my front paw. It’s paining a lot. (makes a pleading noise and nods at Androcles) Lion: (thrusts out paw for Androcles to see) Grrrrr! Androcles: Oh, your paw looks really sore! Lion: (whimpers) Androcles: All right, all right! Maybe I can help you after all. (Lion settles down and makes a whimpering sound, then thrusts out paw to Androcles.) Androcles: Hold still. (Androcles moves towards Lion 14 Androcles and the Lion Ascend G3 English MCB Part 2.indb 14 7/20/2023 12:59:52 PM

and grabs the thorn with two hands) I am going to pull it out now. Okay. One, two, three – here we GO! (Androcles pulls back and pulls the thorn out of Lion’s paw. Lion moans, then roars loudly.) Lion: (howls in pain) OWW! Androcles: Settle down. I still have to clean your wound. I’ll just cover it with some leaves for now and tie them to stop the bleeding. I’ll get some water to wash it clean. There, you might as well rest. (Androcles takes a leaf and wraps it around the lion’s paw.) Lion: (whimpers and then starts snoring loudly) Androcles: Yes, that’s good. Get some sleep. I’ll be back in a few minutes with the water. (Androcles exits.) Scene 2: Prison Setting: A Roman prison scene. Androcles is behind the prison bars. Roman soldiers stand guard. Master stands in front of the prison bars angrily, with his hands on his hips. Narrator: While the lion got better, Roman soldiers found Androcles hiding in the forest. They caught him and put him inside a prison. Master: (to Androcles, who is behind bars) Hah! You thought you could run away from me? You ungrateful wretch! See what I will do to you. You ran away! And after I gave you food and a place to live. For free! Why did you run away? Androcles and the Lion 15 Ascend G3 English MCB Part 2.indb 15 7/20/2023 12:59:53 PM

Androcles: Every day I was beaten to my bones. I was often starved all day long! I’m a human being. I don’t want to be your slave, ever! Warden: (to audience, pointing to Androcles) Only a few are able to actually escape from their masters. (to Androcles) Well, if you’re so clever, you’ll have to fight with the lions. Androcles: No, not that! The lions? Have pity on me! Don’t throw me to the lions! Warden: (smiles wickedly and opens the prison bars) Take him to the Colosseum. (Roman soldiers take Androcles out of the prison bars.) Scene 3: Colosseum Setting: A Colosseum scene. Crowd whispers to one another, excitedly. To the side of the stage is a cage door. Lion is behind the cage door. Emperor: (to audience) Gentlemen! (Crowd members become silent.) Welcome all, to my glorious Colosseum! What a show we have for you tonight! An escaped slave will face justice at the cruel jaws of a hungry lion. Bring out the slave! (Androcles is brought into the arena by Roman soldiers. Androcles stands waiting at the right-hand corner of the stage, shaking and afraid, holding only a small spear in his right hand.) Androcles: (clenching his eyes shut) Oh Gods! Please have mercy on me! Emperor: (shouts) Release the beast! (Soldier opens the cage door. Lion comes out. Lion stretches its legs slowly and bounces towards Androcles.) He was planning to go swimming with his friends. He thought of the cool water longingly. What a great time they would have! Just then he heard Aunt Polly’s voice. “Tom, where are you?” “Coming, Aunt Polly,” he called and rushed to his aunt’s room. “I want you to whitewash the fence today,” Aunt Polly said. “But, we were planning to go swimming,” Tom started but he was not allowed to finish his sentence. 43 Ascend G3 English MCB Part 2.indb 43 7/20/2023 1:00:39 PM

He could not escape. Aunt Polly was strict and he had to obey her. He will have finished the whitewashing by evening and he could not have gone out for swimming after that. He came out of the house sadly with a long brush in one hand and a bucket full of whitewash in the other. He looked at the fence in disbelief. “How high the fence is! How long it is!” Tom thought. The fence was very high and quite long. Tom dipped his brush in the whitewash and drew it slowly across the fence. It made a small white mark. He did it again and there was another small white mark. Tom sat down wearily. It looked as though it would take the whole day and perhaps even the night to finish the work. Suddenly, he saw Jim, the boy who helped his aunt with the difficult jobs in the house. He was carrying a bucket to fetch water from the village pump. “Jim, let me fetch the water while you whitewash the fence. I’ll give you a marble, if you let me do it,” Tom said. Before Jim could reply, he was spotted by Aunt Polly and he went on his way. Tom picked up the brush and started working hard but he couldn’t do it for long. He felt tired and bored.
