1 EARLY COMPUTERS Hello, Friends! Remember me? I am Clicko. Today, we will learn about the history and development of computers. Let Us Start A Computer is a machine used for a calculation or a computation, but actually, it is much more than that. It would be difficult to imagine the world without computers. But there was a time when there was no computer at all. The Computer is a modern invention. To know how a computer works, we learned the various terms such as Data, Processing and Information. Let Us Do 1: Do you remember the steps to complete the process? Write the correct words in the given blanks (withdrawing money from an ATM) _______________ _______________ _______________ Computer Grade 4 1.indb 1 1 11/02/17 2:53 pm
In this lesson We will learn how it all began and explore the different types of devices invented before the computer. A Long time ago, people had to work hard to get something they needed. They always looked for ways to make their work easier and faster. Have you ever wondered how the computer was invented? The computer was not invented by a single person. The term “computer” was given to the people who had to do a lot of calculations. They had to repeat the same type of calculations all the time. Therefore, scientists tried to invent a machine that can perform the task of computing fast and accurate. The machines we call computers today are the result of many years of work by many people. Let us explore the history of computers from early days. Early Counting In early days when our ancestor used to reside in the cave. They used their fingers, stones and sticks for counting. They also made scratches on a wall to keep count of their animals. Sometimes they even tied knots in a rope to record information. Do You Know? The word digit (The numbers 0-9 are called digits) actually refers to a finger or toe. The first tool used by man to count were his own finger. 2 11/02/17 2:53 pm Computer Grade 4 1.indb 2
Let Us Do 2: Take a calculator and try the following sums. 1. 5 + 7 X 4 = ________________ 2. 12 / 3 + 5 = ________________ 3. 15 - 5 X 2 = ________________ History of Computers Let us have a look at the history and early computing devices developed by man. The Abacus The abacus is the first counting device ever made. About 4000 years ago, the Chinese invented the Abacus. This device has a wooden frame. It is divided into two parts by Abacus a horizontal bar. These parts have vertical wires with beads on them. These beads are used for counting and calculating. Napier’s Bones About 400 years ago, John Napier, a Scottish mathematician, invented a calculating device. It was made of a set of rods carved from bones. Hence, it was named as Napier’s Bones. The Pascaline It is the first mechanical calculator in the world Napier’s Bones. Do you know why it is called Pascaline? The Pascaline was invented by a French mathematician called Blaise Pascal in 1642. And hence it is named after him. The Pascaline is made up of wheels and gears. It is used for adding numbers quickly. Meters that are used in Taxis nowadays are an example of Pascaline. Pascaline and Blaise Pascal Computer Grade 4 1.indb 3 3 11/02/17 2:53 pm
Fun Fact Blaise Pascal created the Pascaline (or Pascal’s Calculator) to help his father. He was a tax collector, in his endless and exhausting calculations for his work. Blaise was not even 19 at that time. The Analytical Engine In 1833, an English mathematician Charles Babbage invented the machine which could do complicated calculations and store the results at each stage. It was called the Analytical Engine. It was the first mechanical calculator. This machine laid the basis for the modern computer. For this great invention of the computer, Sir Charles Babbage is also known as the father of the computer. Analytical Engine and Charles Babbage Lady Ada Augusta Lovelace She is also known as Lady Ada. She was the first to introduce the concept of programming. She created the set of instructions for the analytical engine to follow. This set of instructions was called the program. Due to this, she was regarded as the ‘First Computer Programmer’ in the world. The Tabulating Machine Tabulating Machine In 1890, Herman Hollerith an American statistician invented a machine called the Tabulating machine. This machine is capable of reading data, processing it and giving the desired output. It is based on IPO model. This machine is capable of reading both numbers and letters. 4 11/02/17 2:53 pm Computer Grade 4 1.indb 4

2 THE CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT Hello, friends. You all know about the basic parts of a computer. But do you know the functions of a CPU? Let us find out. Let Us Start Let us recall the history of computers by rearranging the jumbled words. 1. B C U A S A __________________________________ 2. E H S R A C L E A G B A B B _________________________________________________________ 3. C A I S A L N E P ____________________________________________ In the previous lesson, we have learnt that compared to those early machines, today’s computers are amazing. They are not only thousands of times faster; they can also fit on the desk, on your lap, or even in your pocket. Computers work through an interaction of hardware and software. Hardware refers to the parts of a computer that you can see and touch, including the case and everything inside it. The most important piece of hardware is a tiny rectangular chip inside your computer and is called the Central Processing Unit (CPU), or Microprocessor. Computer Grade 4 1.indb 9 9 11/02/17 2:53 pm
In this lesson We will learn about the functions and the functional units of the Central Processing Unit. Like human beings, the computer also needs a brain to work. At the core of every computer is a device roughly the size of a large postage stamp. This device is known as the Central Processing Unit or CPU. The CPU of a computer is a piece of hardware that carries out the instructions of a computer program. This program will take inputs from an input device, process it and give the results to an output device. Every instruction has to go through the CPU. So let’s say you press the letter ‘k’ on your keyboard and it appears on the screen - the CPU is what makes this possible. CPU’s aren’t only found in desktop or laptop computers, many electronic devices now depend on them for their operation. Mobile Phones, DVD Players and Washing Machines are examples of equipment that has a CPU. CPU Basics The CPU is often referred to as a processor, central processor, or microprocessor. A computer’s CPU handles all Instructions it receives from Hardware and Software running on the computer. Do You Know? When the CPU of a computer is contained on a chip, it is called a Microprocessor. 10 11/02/17 2:53 pm Computer Grade 4 1.indb 10
History The CPU was first developed at Intel by Federico Faggin and Ted Hoff in 1970. The first processor released by Intel was the 4004 processor. The power of a computer is its Central Processing Unit. More power in the CPU means faster calculations and thus a faster computer. CPU Functions The main function of the CPU is processing instructions given to the computer. The functions of the CPU of a computer are as follows: • The CPU reads and executes program instructions. • It coordinates the activities of the computer system. • It controls the operation of all parts of the computer. • It stores data, intermediate results and instructions (program). Functional Units of the CPU The computer system essentially comprises three important parts – Input device, Central Processing Unit (CPU) and the Output device. The CPU itself is made of three components namely: • The Memory or Storage Unit • The Control Unit (CU) • The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) The Machine cycle explains clearly the functions of these components individually. Figure 2.1 Basic structure of a CPU Figure 2.2 Stepwise Functions Computer Grade 4 1.indb 11 11 11/02/17 2:53 pm
Let’s learn all the units here. The Memory or Storage Unit This unit can store instructions, data and intermediate results. It supplies information to the other units of the computer when needed. It is also known as an internal storage unit or main memory or primary storage or Random Access Memory (RAM). The Control Unit This unit controls the flow of information through the processorand coordinates the activities of the other units within the processor. It is the “Brain within the Brain”, as it controls what happens inside the processor, which in turn controls the rest of the PC. The Memory or Storage Unit An arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is a major component of the central processing unit of a computer system. This unit consists of two sections. • Arithmetic Section • Logic Section 12 11/02/17 2:53 pm Computer Grade 4 1.indb 12

5 MORE ON MS PAINT Hey, Friends! Let us learn more about the features in MS Paint. Let Us Start We have worked with many tools in MS Paint in the previous class. We now know how to draw different shapes, write text and use different colors to create our own images. What if we want to modify an image we have? We can use MS Paint to have fun making changes to such an image. Let Us Do 1: Using tools that you learnt in the earlier class, create the image given below in MS Paint. In this lesson We will learn • More features and tools of MS Paint • How to use images and make changes to them in Paint Features of Paint 1. Brush Tools There are various kinds of brushes that a user can use to make the painting more creative and fun. The different types of brushes are: Oil Brush, Crayon, Watercolor Brush, Marker (or felt pen), Natural Pencil and Airbrush. Figure 5.1 Brush Tools 2. Changing Sizes This means that the user can change the size to smaller or bigger after drawing a shape. This can be done by selecting Zoom in or Zoom out with your mouse (Figure 5.2). 3.
