Using the Format and Edit Menu The text we type is displayed on the blank area in Notepad. Did you see a small, blinking line on the monitor? It is known as the cursor (Fig. 5.3). The Font of the text can be changed by clicking on Format option. Using the Format Menu The Format menu has only two options: Word Wrap and Font (Fig. 5.4). Word Wrap: Fig. 5.4 If the typed text cannot fit onto a line then the text will automatically shift to the next line. This is called Word Wrap. To turn ON the Word Wrap option: Fig. 5.5 STEP 1: Click the “Format” menu and select “Word Wrap”. STEP 2: The scroll bar at the bottom of the Notepad window will disappear. A check will appear next to the “Word Wrap” option on the Format menu (Fig. 5.5). By default the Word Wrap option is off. It means everything we type ends up on one long line, until we press Enter, which will start another long line. Font: Text style Text size This option shows a Font Dialogue Font name Preview Box (Fig.5.6). Using the Edit Menu Fig. 5.7 The Edit menu has many options. The first item on the Edit menu is Undo. It is very useful while editing. The rest of the menu, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Find, Find Next, Replace, Go To, Select All, and Time/Date, are standard in nearly all Windows programs that deal with documents. All the Edit options have associated keyboard shortcuts. Let Us Practice: Start a New Notepad file and type the below sentences. STEP 3: Save As dialog box appears. STEP 4: Give a name you like for the file and click Save. Now, the document is saved in the computer. How to Exit Notepad STEP 1: Click on the File menu. Open notepad and ask the students to note the options, similar to other activities --- new, open and save. Emphasize that the functions of these options remain the same across different activities. Title Bar: The blue bar at the top of the screen is known as the Title bar. It shows the title of the page. Menu Bar: The Menu bar is under the Title Bar in the window. It has three items on the left. These are Paint button, Home and View tab. Ribbon: All the tools, the color palette, and most commands are grouped together in the ribbon. Canvas: It is also called the drawing area. Do You Know? Your pictures can also be called graphics, drawings or images. They all mean the same thing. Saving the Work It’s a good idea to save the drawing as soon as you begin. Click the Save button every few minutes. This saves the loss of work if the program closes unexpectedly. The very first time that you save a new picture, you will need to give your picture a file name. To save the file STEP 1: Click the Paint button, and then click Save. Colors, Tools and Shapes The Color section of the ribbon has three parts: Boxes showing the active colors—Color 1 and Color2, the Color Palette and the Edit Colors button. The Color Boxes Color 1 is the Foreground Color and is always black when you open Paint. Color 2 is the Background Color and is always white when you open Paint or open a different Paint page. The tools group is on the left side of the Paint window. This section describes some common tools and how they are used. The Text Tool The text tool is used to add text to the drawing area. It lets us add a simple message or title. STEP 1: On the Home tab, in the Tools group, click the Text tool. STEP 2: Drag the pointer in the drawing area where you want to add text. STEP 3: Under Text Tools, on the Text tab, click Fig. 6.3 the font face, size, and style in the Font group (Fig. 6.3). In the Colors group, click Color 1, and then click a color. This is the text color. Type the text that you want to add. The Eraser To erase anything from the drawing area, we use the eraser tool. By default, the eraser changes any area you erase to white. We can change the eraser color. For example, if you set the background color to yellow, anything you erase turns to yellow. Follow the steps below: STEP 1: On the Home tab, in the Tools group, click the Eraser tool. STEP 2: In the Colors group, click Color 2 and then click the color that you want to erase with. If you want to erase with white, you don’t have to select a color. STEP 3: Drag the pointer over the area you want to erase. Do You Know? The Color Picker It is used to select or pick the color from a drawing. STEP 1: Select the Color Picker tool. (Fig. 6.4) STEP 2: Click on the part of where you want to copy the color. STEP 3: Now select the color fill tool. STEP 4: Click on the part where you Fig. 6.4 want this color. Click the color in your picture that you want to set as Color 1. Right- click the color in the picture that you want to set as the Color 2. Draw a Shape There are a number of shapes present in Shapes menu: arrows, speech balloons, various stars and others. It allows us to select a shape, then draws it as we want. Below are the steps to draw a shape; STEP 1: On the Home tab, in the Shapes group, click a ready-made shape, such as the Rounded Rectangle. (Fig. 6.5) STEP 2: To add a ready-made shape, drag the pointer across the drawing area to make the shape. Fig. 6.5 STEP 3: To change the outline style, in the Shapes group, click Outline, and then click an outline style. If you don’t want your shape to have an outline, click No outline. STEP 4: In the Colors group, click Color 2, and then click a color to use to fill the shape. To change the fill style, in the Shapes group, click Fill, and then click a fill style. If you draw with your right mouse button, Color 1 will be used for the Fill. Let Us Practice: Tina wants to draw a kite similar to the shown below. She also wants to include her name in the drawing.
