Such sentences use reflexive pronouns (‘himself’, ‘herself’, ‘themselves’) to refer to the subject (noun or pronoun). Observe carefully: • G aurav can fix the toy truck by himself. ‘Gaurav’ is both the subject and the object of this sentence. The reflexive pronoun ‘himself’ refers to ‘Gaurav’. • Similarly, in the second sentence, the reflexive pronoun ‘herself’ refers to the pronoun ‘she’. • T he reflexive pronoun ‘themselves’ refers to the pronoun ‘they’ in the third sentence. Let us look at subject pronouns and the reflexive pronouns used for them. Remember: Singular reflexive pronouns are formed with ‘-self’ and plural with ‘- selves’. Choose and write the appropriate reflexive pronouns in the blanks. Priya and Prateek are on their grandparents’ farm. They came yesterday after travelling by two buses. Both of them take care of farm animals, like the many sheep there, and also help in the fields. In the morning, Priya plucks fresh tomatoes and digs potatoes from the ground. Grandfather packs them in boxes. Prateek tends to the farm animals. He knows a lot about them. There is a small forest patch near the farm. Sometimes, foxes get into the farm at night in search of food. Grandfather yells, and they run away. Priya and Prateek’s grandmother makes yummy food from fresh farm vegetables. After meals, they wash the dishes and glasses. At night, all of them play carrom and watch cricket matches on TV. 56

Remember: • R egular plurals are formed by adding ‘-s’ to the ends of words. Examples: car – cars, pen – pens • Many plurals are formed in different ways and not just by adding ‘-s’ to the ends of words. Examples: brush – brushes, box – boxes • S ome words remain the same in the singular and plural forms. Examples: sheep – sheep, deer – deer To form plurals of words that end in ‘-x’, ‘-o’, ‘-s’, ‘-ch’, ‘-sh’ and ‘-ss’, add ‘-es’ to the ends.
