Chairman’s Report June 2020 Dear Members, Sponsors, Supporters and Friends, as we slowly emerge from the horror of Covid 19 and Britain seems to be coming out of lockdown one small step at a time it is now the time that I am able to update you all on the current situation at our club, Lockdown came abruptly and aggressively tearing through the rugby fixtures and the cancellation of our three Titans home fixtures made a massive impact on the financial position of the club as a whole but most importantly the financial budget that we had promised and delivered to The Titans for their hugely successful campaign through season 2019/2020, likewise the damage to the commercial opera- tion that funds so much of the Rugby at your club was huge, with every Spring and Summer conference, training meeting, party and other celebrations all cancelled like so many businesses across the country the future looked bleak. As a committee we moved quickly, James Tolman and myself built an emergency plan within two days and closed the club, furloughed the staff and players, made contact with both our creditors and debtors and effectively wrapped the club up until such time as we could re-open properly. James applied suc- cessfully for the grants available to business from Taunton and Somerset West and by careful financial management I am both pleased and proud that we have come through the storm with the Club in ex- cellent shape and ready to move forward to the new season. We explored alternative uses for the club building including overflow hospital facilities or even for use as a temporary school anything in fact that would keep some income coming into the club. We intend to bring back key staff from furlough on the 1st July with the expectation that we will be making contact with Sponsors and supporters and giving them the incredible news that Taunton Titans will be starting their 2020/2021 campaign promoted to National One, a fantastic achievement by the Titans coaching team and squad and well deserved for the staggering effort that has been made to get to this point. Having met with Tony and Chris during the lockdown (socially distant of course!!) the pas- sion and determination of both of them and the squad was truly humbling as Chairman, the coaches have truly created a squad built on pride for the shirt and the values of Rugby and we of course wish them massive success for the season. With regards to all other Rugby at Taunton we are waiting for the RFU to give us confirmation when everything will return to some degree of normality, I understand that Youth Rugby may be delayed un- til well into the traditional season but any news that is forthcoming will be cascaded out via the website and social media. The lockdown period has been a unique, scary and uncertain time for all of us and your club has like- wise felt the pressure of what the future may or may not bring, I want to extend a personal thanks to members who have made payments to us for next years membership despite not knowing when the season may start, to the ground staff who have continued to work on getting our amazing facility ready for the new season, to the 200 club who donated a massive £7500 into the club coffers to help keep everything going, to James Tolman who has kept working through this time (and stood alongside me as we waved the Travellers out of our club) and to everyone who makes Taunton RFC a very special place to be and be part of. John Wrelton 3

Our first season in age grade rugby will definitely go down in history!! A combination of bad weather and a worldwide pandemic saw our season cut short and matches cancelled. Our matches started off with a successful journey to Barnstaple where our team most definitely looked the smartest in the clubhouse after the match. Over the course of the season we all watched the team grow both in skills and teamwork. 16 players trained and played on a regular basis and a few came to see what rugby is all about. In January the Under 7’s enjoyed Super Saturday with the Titans. The We would like to thank team had a great day training and being flag bearers welcoming the Wellington Motors and team onto the pitch. Everyone enjoyed a carvery lunch and we hope to South Street Motors for take sponsoring our post part match shirts. The team looked great after each match. Sunday 15th March saw us travel to Chew Valley for our first tournament. In very wet and cold conditions the team played well and stood out against our oppo- nents. Well done to those children and parents who braved the weather in what was to be our last match of the season. Finally we would like to say a big thank you to everyone for supporting us in our first season, to those have driven the children to matches/training, those who made cakes for our fundraiser, the families for supporting the team and to those who helped the children to get fed and watered after the matches. A big thank you also to Wayne, John, Steve and Ryan for coaching the team this year. We are sadly losing John for next season so if anyone would like to become a coach please let us know!! 5
So… that was a season we won’t forget in a hurry! We lost a lot of rugby time due to the weather and then it was cut short due to COVID-19, meaning we weren’t able to play in the end of season age-grade festivals. Our season culminated in what was probably the highlight of the season… a Super Saturday trip to Sandy Park to watch the Exeter Chiefs thrash Bath. We were entertained with 11 tries in a 57-20 point victory! The Raptors had a training session with some of the Exeter squad players, as well as a tour of the changing rooms, the chance to form a guard of honour for both sets of players and a lap of honour at half time. It was a brilliant day all round. The Raptors have one of the smallest squads within the Taunton Youth setup, but yet we have always managed to field enough players to compete in all fixtures and always had a good turnout for training, whatever the weather or venue. Credit must go to all the Raptors for their commitment to continue developing their skills and team- work. There have been some brilliant individual and – more importantly – team performances throughout the season. Being able to witness the development at close quarters of all the players in all aspects of the game has been a pleasure. We would like to thank all parents and those who have sup- ported us throughout the season, whether that’s cheering on the side lines on those cold winter mornings or travel- ling across the county and beyond on those away days. I’d personally like to thank all our dedicated coaches, as well as our fantastic admin staff who have been great be- hind the scenes. Special mention goes to one of our coaches, Mark Williams, who planned and organised our “Guess the Score” fundraiser, which managed to bring in over £300. Thanks also go to his wife – Lisa – and our team administrator and dedicated parent, Tor Tremear, for collecting the monies. 6

PLAN OF RETURN FOR RUGBY The RFU are following a 6 stage plan to return, we are currently at Stage C. 8
Wow, what an end to the season, not sure anyone could have predicted that! The Eagles U9’s have had a great first season of tackling, the players were definitely ready and took to it like ducks to water….. Due to the state of the pitches at some clubs it seemed that the Eagles may have been better named the ducks! As with other age groups many of our games were cancelled due to the weather, however the games we did play, the players showed great commitment, passion and teamwork. During the training sessions the coaches worked on a free flowing game which the players embraced. Unfortunately we missed out on a couple of the big fundraising opportunities, the main one being the annual U9’s festival, which we were due to host. Our first date was cancelled due to the weather / pitch conditions and the rearranged date was cancelled The Eagles coaches are looking due to COVID-19! There were a lot of disappointed forward to welcoming everyone back players, coaches and parents from Taunton as well as from the other clubs who had entered. But we for the new season as soon as the made the correct decision to ensure the safety of RFU guidelines and the club can all involved. Plus we will get the opportunity to host allow. another festival in a few years! 9
We loved meeting some of the ex Taunton Youth players who have gone on to play for Exeter and Bath, who came to Hyde Park at the start of the season to meet the teams! The 2019/20 season started brilliantly with 30 players and a new coach signed up. Training sessions went well for the first weeks and we had our first game away to Barnstaple in October where The Vipers played superbly. This set the tone for the following games with excellent efforts against Honiton, Burnham, Chard and old rivals Wellington RFC. Then everything changed - The UK weather as normal deteriorated, making it impossible for us to train and play some matches at home. We managed to do some training at Taunton Vale and attend a few away matches. This was followed by Covid-19, which abruptly halted our season and also meant our trip to watch the Seven’s tournament in London had to be cancelled (Booo!). We could not have asked more from the team and we are all immensely proud with the way they have conducted themselves and supported each other on the pitch, at training and when representing the club. We are also incredibly lucky to have such a great group of coaches, first aiders and parent help- ers who give up their time on and off the field to help with our brilliant team. The start date of 2020/21 Season is still undecided. Although the Premiership will commence again in August, and First Team activities for The Club are planned, as a youth team we come under the scope of RFU Community Rugby and at the time of writing, no community rugby can take place. Please be assured that as soon as we are able, the Vipers will be back in action. We also had an amazing day out at Exeter Chiefs where The Vipers trained at the ground, had a behind the scenes tour and watched The Chiefs take on Glasgow in the Heineken Cup. Meeting players, getting photos and autographs afterwards was brilliant. 10
ANOTHER EX-TAUNTON YOUTH PLAYER COMES HOME! This is awesome news for the Titans as we welcome back Joel Conlon to the club. Joel has spent the last couple of seasons not playing due to injury but has recently been given the all clear to return to playing, which is great news for not just the Titans but for rugby. A Taunton boy through and through! Joel lives just around the corner from the Towergate Stadium, he came up through the youth section at the club and was a pupil in Taunton at Heathfield Community School. Joel went on to be part of the Exeter Chiefs academy before moving into the Chiefs sen- ior squad, while at Exeter he also represented England u20’s where he played a huge part in the Junior World Cup win, scoring a try in the final to beat South Africa 21 - 20. Joel then made the move London where he played first team rugby with Saracens lin- ing up alongside the likes of Farrell the Vunipola brothers and Maro Itoji, before injury cut things short. Head Coach Tony Yapp said; “We are very excited to have Joel coming back too Taunton, I know the last couple of seasons have been tough for him, but the fact he has been given the all clear to play rugby again is great news for him and certainly for the Titans. Despite not being able to play, we’ve seen a lot of Joel at the club over the last couple of seasons due to his love of the club and the fact he lives just around the corner. It’s certainly not lost on us all the sort of quality that Joel is going to bring to the Titans having played England 20’s,Exeter Chiefs and more recently Saracens, and the experi- ences he has picked up both on and off the field is going to be invaluable to us as we start life in National one” On signing Joel said; \"It’s an incredibly exciting time for me, the last two years have been pretty tough hav- ing to step away and take a prolonged break from the game with no certainty as to whether I would be able to return or not.Luckily the body has healed and feels better than ever and in the last six months I have really regained my love for the sport which I think goes missing with bad injury runs. Being cleared to play again I always had com- ing home in my mind, It’s my home club and it’s where I started my rugby journey so I would love the opportunity to wear the shirt again. The club has never been in abetter place and that’s purely down to the people who are involved, I can’t wait to join them and be part of a great group of people and hopefully as players we can make my home club proud this year. All at Taunton RFC wish Joel all the best with the Titans and are so proud for what he has achieved in his rugby career so far. For Joel to come back to his home club and rep- resent Taunton once again is very special and something we are all excited about. 11
The Season saw the Rebels raring to go, however the AT THE START OF THE SEASON THE weather made rugby training/playing interesting! We had REBELS ENJOYED MEETING TWO a few missed sessions, but were lucky enough to be able FORMER REBELS IN JOE SNOW & KIERAN VERDEN, ALONG WITH to use outside pitches to actually do some contact training or Taunton Vale SC for indoor/3G (apart from NAHUM MERIGAN & WILL VAUGHAN. ALL WERE EX- when they double booked us lol!). TAUNTON YOUTHPLAYERS! Our great coaches & volunteers all de- 12 serve HUGE credit for making the time sacrifices to do courses, run training sessions etc.that mean the Rebels are correctly trained and looked after each season. The Rebels had a great time at the first ever ‘Titans Super Saturday’, enjoying a training session with Titans players, a behind the scenes tour, flagging on the team and a meal with the Titans players post match! All topped off with a great win by the Titans! Unfortunately, our tour to St.Ives in Cornwall had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 just 4 days before! :-( But the Rebels look forward to the Surfing, Beach Games, Pizza Party and RUGBY once it is all over!
The 2019/20 season started well Our first game set the tone for the following games in which and picked up from the excellent The Typhoons dominated against all opposition with hard work, skill, teamwork and big smiles all round. Those in attendance finish we made to the season will recall memorable efforts against Honiton, Burnham, Chard before. The Typhoons assembled and old rivals Wellington RFC. in September with 27 players signed up, training sessions went well for the first weeks and we had our memorable first game away to Barnstaple in October, where The Typhoons came back strong to dominate a home team that had a big size and weight advantage. Then the weather came along and started to spoil to the party, making it hard for us and all other clubs in the County to host games due to the horrendous rain and terrible pitch conditions. We struggled on and we were again proud to see so many boys turn up for mid-week training, even though the prospect of getting a game the following Sunday was slim. Most of January and February was affected. But we soldiered on and off the field had great events such as the Flip Out Xmas Party, Super Saturday with The Taunton Titans and the infamous Ladies Day (what goes on tour, stays on tour eh Girls ?) We also said farewell to Kazusa Yoshimasu and his family who relocated back to Japan after his 3rd season with The Typhoons. Kazusa was a great player with lots of heart and his family never failed in their support, on and off the field and they will be greatly missed Being a Typhoon is a blast ! Whether you are a player, sibling, parent or coach, Remember – Once a Typhoon, always a Typhoon ! 13

The Hawks have a 36 player strong squad with 8 coaches. Last season, we started pre- season training in July to get the boys fitness up and to get them used to the size of the pitch for the upcoming season. Our first match of the season was a curtain raiser for the Titans first home game of the season against Redruth. Both teams had a great time and got to walk around the pitch at half time waving to the crowd. A picture of the 2 teams is shown above! The boys continued to train hard on Wednesday nights for their first season of junior rugby and this showed with some great performances on Sundays. We had our Christmas party at Hollywood Bowl which proves that the bond and friendship that rugby creates is more than just a game. Unfortunately the poor weather conditions and then COVID-19 brought the season to an early finish and saw our tour and Super Saturday at Exeter Chiefs cancelled :-( On the plus side we have 22 players accepted into the Bristol Bears DPP which is a credit to the players themselves, and we hope to add to this number throughout this coming season! 15
Taunton’s U15’s for the 2020/21 season go by the name of Tornadoes. Many of the team mem- bers have been playing together for several years and their trust in each other really shows They are a formidable teamwho have earnt themselves quite a reputation in the area. Before the season ended they were due to play the semi-final of the Somerset Cup, having made getting that far in the competition look easy. At the end of last season we said goodbye to head coach Sam Derry and team manager Andy Derry. They have been involved with the team since U7’s and the whole team are grateful for the time they have spent nurturing the players over the years. Now is the time for them to spend family time with new family member baby Cooper. Going forward to team will be coaches by Mark Curry, Keith Smal;ldon, Andy Guest and Ade Rooney. This coaching team has a real combination of skills, including playing and coaching experience as well as a high level of fitness. Training is on Wednesday evenings and new members are always welcome. This year the squad captain is Olly Guest and vice-captain is Harrison Stanford-Page, Hope- fully they will get to lift a trophy or two before the end of the season. We have several members of the squad who have progressed into the Bears Excel Training Group. As the game becomes more technical for the boys they will be learning and practicing new skills. The changes and development in this years game will have the boys lifting at the line- out and using a full size ball. The boys seem to take everything in their stride and will almost certainly relish the new challenges ahead. 16

Last season we had some great wins, a nail biting draw and a couple of hiccups along the way. Rugby, at times, can be an emotional game for players and spectators. It will often draw more on play- ers’ mental strength than their physical strength. One quick reflection from last season, which shows this and later proved to be the catalyst of develop- ing an incredible squad of players. It came in the first round of the Somerset Cup and was how to deal with a team who were expected to roll over and let us win but have, within 10 mins of the game start- ing, gone two tries up? The game wasn’t supposed to go like this. We have never lost to them and, for the first time, we were on an end of a bit of a drubbing. Credit has to go to our opposition as they played brilliantly on that day. For us it was a bit of a shake-up. A Rugby Premiership coach once told me that you shouldn’t be able to tell the score of a game by looking at players’ body language, unfortu- nately on that day it was far too obvious. It was the next training session and the next run of games which makes our jobs as coaches extreme- ly rewarding. The lads knew they had played below their best, they didn’t need to be told by us, they came back with a renewed vigour, the intensity at training went up, they understood that rugby is built from getting the basics right first – supporting, communicating and being a positive influence on the pitch. From that moment on, the Tigers were a force to be reckoned with, it no longer mattered about the scores but about the performance, each game was much improved. We no longer allowed ourselves to lose, however we could be beaten, but the opposition would have to work blooming hard if they did. We refused to roll over. We cannot always win and that will happen in any sport but take the loss on the chin, reflect on performance and come back better for it. All the coaches were proud by the way the squad played throughout the rest of the season. Skills were improving, commitment to your own de- velopment was improving, you were supporting each other to become the best they can be and your performances were better for it, great support, free flowing, using space and stacking numbers in the rucks and mauls, making tackles and refusing to take a step back in defence. At no point could you tell by your body language who was winning or losing and that was important. Without stating the obvious, which I now will! Covid19 put a stop to your development and end of year tour. Which was a shame. However, it is no longer about time we lost but about making the most of the time we have now. Training will start again soon, and we look forward to welcoming you all back. The game will now start to look much more like the senior game – far more opportunities to be competitive. There will be some new skills to learn and some old skills to develop, which the coaching team are looking forward to supporting you with. It will be our last hurrah as your coaches and the players are starting to approach the final stage of their journey through youth rugby. So let’s make it a good one! 18
