LGBTQ+ PRESENTED THROUGHT THE MAIN- STREAMED FILMS AND SERIES IN THAILAND Sequential Recut Project BY AMP CHALERMWAT Proposals for the Final Project: Sequential Recut
Concept Paper for Sequential Recut I started working on this project with an initial idea about how does the life of peo- ple in Thai LGBTQ+ community was presented through mainstreamed films, and series. Historical and cultural context are significant and have to be applied in order to make people from the different cultures understand the story I'm trying to tell and the points I want to communicate. Even though we have produced a lot of LGBTQ+ movies in our country, this doesn’t mean these gender identities are fully accepted by everyone in the country. The number of published LGBTQ+ series are increasing over time while most of them(especially the mainstreamed ones) are boys love or gay story. People usually called or categorized these series as \"Gay movies\". I personally think that this is not a best way to define them. By doing this, it turns \"Gay\" into the selling point of the series. This point suggests that we still look at those self defined gender people and treat them differently from what we do with male and female. While many people are now trying to raise awareness about the equality, I would say that they should consider this point as well. If every person is treated equally, those series would be more focus on the story that’s going and the characters' personal life as the selling point in state of trying to present a picture of LGBTQ+ couple. It is true for the fact that people in Thailand are started to develop their level of knowl- edge and their acceptance towards LGBTQ+ while comparing to what they used to be in the history/past days. The way we have more gay series streaming all over the media is still a good sign which can lead to the more understanding of LGBTQ+ in the future.
A study on mainstreamed gay films and series from the present days These are some gay series which were presented through Thai main television chan- nels. Almost all of them were made from the fictional stories/novels. The film produc- tion company often contact the author then work together to form a series. The stories usually talking about the relationship between male characters which were created during the time they were either high school or university students. Since most of the characters are youths, the director always talk about the confusion created within the character, presented as a scene which the character is questioned on their gender identities. They would say that they are confused because they’re still very young and they will definitely found out later when they're old enough. Since we have a very conservative culture, these series love to talk about the struggling stage before coming out as a self defined gender person. After coming out, they have to deal with their family members first and then the society. The serious argument scenes with parents tend to appear on almost all of Thai LGBTQ+ films and series. By looking at the posters, I would say that the elements put into the work are not sug- gesting much on what’s the story are going to talk about. The main element and focus of the posters are tending to be a picture of male lead characters. This brought back the idea of the selling point I mentioned about earlier.
A study on LGBTQ+ characters appeared on the mainstreamed films and series There’s several times where the film director decided to include LGBTQ+ characters into their works. Back in 2014, there’s a series about teenagers life which the director made a decision to put two couples which participated in the same sex relationship into the series. The example scenes are showing above. This is a situation of an individual, parents should give youth/their children some advice. The phrase appeared on the kissing scenes reflects on the cultural context of Thai conservative culture. The same text also applied to the other kissing, intimate, drink- ing, and smoking scenes presented in the same series.
