t. St. Peter’s College Scholarships and Awards 2020 Paul J. Hoenmans Bursary Paul J. Hoenmans, a 1950’s alumnus, grew up in Pilger where there was no high school at that time. He took correspondence classes, but needed to get his grade 12 diploma from a recognized school. Mr. Hoenmans tells us, “One of the best in the province, even then in the 1940’s, was, of course, St. Peter’s College. The problem was we didn’t have any money. Even though being a full time student and a boarder was not very expensive, in today’s terms, money was hard to come by in the ‘30’s. My dad was a small town merchant and he strug- gled to feed us four children. The Abbot at the time said, ‘Come on here anyway, and when you have the where-with-all, I know you’ll pay us back.’ Well I went to college here for two years, got my diploma, went on to university, became an engineer, and entered the world of business and commerce.” Mr. Hoenmans became very successful, retiring in 1997 as Director and President of Mobil Oil Corporation. He returned to SPC in September 2008 to attend our inaugural Key to Success Gala and to present SPC with a gift of more than $1 million. Mr. Hoenmans remarked, “The atmosphere here at the school set a way of life that I would not have achieved had I not come here. It re- ally was the moral compass, as I like to say, that guided my life, and while there were many failures along the way, overall that compass is still there today, and helps me and guides me as I go through my life.” Part of Mr. Hoenmans’ donation was directed to establish the Paul J.
