Newark Boys Chorus School Inspiring Excellence In Academics & Music Since 1969 Hello Friends and Welcome to the 47th Annual Rainbow Awards Dinner! Tonight, we recognize our distinguished Honorees, see and hear from our students, experience highlights of student-life at NBCS, and support the important work of the school. It is through YOUR commitments and care that we continue to offer our students powerful, life-changing experiences without tuition. It is through your gifts that we offer the music and dedication of these boys to the world. Together, we are Newark Boys Chorus School! Our Honorees represent what is so very important about the City of Newark; their focus on the health and safety of our community and the impactful gifts they have made to Newark Boys Chorus School. We are proud to shine a bright light on the success and accomplishments of these leaders of our community. Their paths are inspirational, providing a model for the young men in our care. This is a critically important time for NBCS as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. Our students have fared well through an outstanding year of learning and music-making. And next week, they are traveling on a concert tour of Hawaii and Los Angeles! Travel is an essential part of the NBCS experience and your support makes this possible. We have watched these young men grow into themselves and prepare to meet the world with kindness and confidence. It is their leadership that will shape the future of this community and beyond. Please know that your contributions go directly to the education of our students. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, administration, staff, and students, thank you for joining us this evening to celebrate. We look forward to continuing this friendship and applauding our students for their accomplishments. YOU have made a tremendous impact on the lives of every Newark Boys Chorus student! Tutti bravi! Newark Boys Chorus School Inspiring Excellence In Academics & Music Since 1969 About The School The Newark Boys Chorus School (NBCS) is a unique independent day school located in Newark, NJ. Founded in 1969, the school provides a rigorous academic and musical education to young men from the greater Newark area in grades five through eight. Our students graduate with the maturity, discipline and self-confidence to succeed in life. Our alumni continue their achievements at prestigious secondary schools and become leaders in their careers and communities. History The school’s roots can be traced back to 1966 when local students were recruited to sing the angels’ voices in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. They were a huge hit and additional performances were demanded. However, the rigors and commitment needed for practice cut into time for schoolwork. To give the boys an academic experience on par with their musical one, the school was created in 1969. Music Program Our music program begins with the Apprentice Chorus program for fifth graders. The students step up to the Concert Chorus for sixth through eighth grades. The experience of participating in a chorus, along with the skills developed in music theory, piano and voice classes, foster the discipline, perseverance and poise critical to becoming successful men. The chorus has been heard throughout the world, performing a diversified repertoire that includes classical music, spirituals, folk music and jazz. NBCS has performed at worldrenowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, in addition to the White House and cathedrals throughout Europe. The chorus has traveled to more than 15 countries across five continents on our triennial International Tour. Academic Program We are committed to academic excellence and provide a complete academic program, which is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The curriculum is designed to challenge, inform, inspire and nurture growing minds while also fostering critical thinking skills; small class sizes provide students with opportunities for individualized instruction. Our graduates continue their education at prestigious secondary schools and more than 90% enroll in college, with several pursuing advanced degrees. • Over 1,000 students have graduated from NBCS • A ll our alumni graduate from high school and more than 90% enroll in college • Students perform to an audience of more than 30,000 people each year • A ll of our students attend NBCS tuition free 1016 Broad Street · Newark, NJ 07102 · (973) 621-8900 · [email protected] · www.nbcs.us -3-

Keynote Address by Community Building Leadership Awardee THE HONORABLE MAYOR RAS BARAKA Ras J. Baraka is the 40th Mayor of the City of Newark. A native of Newark, whose family has lived in the City for more than 80 years, Mayor Baraka’s progressive approach to governing has won him accolades from grassroots organizations to the White House. With a forward-thinking agenda that reduced crime to its lowest levels in five decades, addressed affordability while maintaining steady growth, lowered unemployment, and returned local control of schools after more than two decades, Baraka has defied expectations since taking office in 2014.  Mayor Baraka’s futurist agenda has included the implementation of a groundbreaking partnership called Hire. Buy. Live. Newark, a program that marks the first time that any US city has sought to transform its economy by combining employment, procurement, and residential strategies. As part of his commitment to strengthen Newark’s position in the expanded technology space, the City launched LinkNWK (pronounced Link Newark). This communications network of sidewalk kiosks provides Newark residents and visitors with free, gigabit Wi-Fi, mobile device charging, phone calls to anywhere in the U.S., access to municipal services, maps and directions, and real-time local information on city streets at no cost to taxpayers or users. Mayor Baraka is also recognized nationally as a thought leader in the space of urban revitalization, and his commitment to reducing crime in Newark, reimagining public safety, tackling the city’s housing crisis, and developing innovative and community-driven approaches to eliminating income inequality has solidified his status as one of the country’s most progressive elected officials. Mayor Baraka was educated in the Newark Public Schools. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and a Master’s Degree in Education Supervision from St. Peter’s University in Jersey City. His father, the late Amiri Baraka, was a legendary poet and playwright. His mother, Amina Baraka, is herself a renowned poet. Doting husband, and father of three daughters and a son, Mayor Baraka is a published author and is well-regarded in the entertainment industry for his appearance on the Grammy-award winning album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” in his authentic role as an educator, and for his EP “What We Want.” -6-
