HALAL LANNA Lanna Muslims Lanna City of Chiang Mai is a city that has a rich history. It has unique traditions and cultures, as well as many beautiful sights. As an ancient city, it consists of people of many nationalities and languages. These people brought their own cultures from different places and fuse them with Lanna culture until this blend becomes one of the charms of Chiang Mai. So are the Muslims in Chiang Mai, their way of life, culture, and tradition results from a mix of diverse cultures. And this blend turns out to be something unique. Chinese Muslims from China who migrated to northern Thailand were Yunnan Muslims, the oldest Chinese group in Chiang Mai. They reside in two major areas. The first group is Chinese Muslims living in urban areas. This group has been there since the age of bartering. This is the oldest Yunnan Chinese Muslims group in Chiang Mai. The other group is a group of Chinese Muslims living in border areas. Most of them were immigrants during the political upheaval in China. They came at the same time the Kuomintang or Chinese Nationalist Party came. They settled in major cities of northern Thailand, such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Mae Hong Son. Their income came from selling fruits and vegetables, running restaurants, tea shops, and grocery stores. They had done this until they became commercially successful. And that improved the economic status of Chinese Muslims from Yunnan. This group of people are called “Haw” or “Haw Chinese”. This name is used in the registration of their mosque called “Islam Baan Haw Mosque” in 1917. Later, this mosque was registered in civil registration with the government sector. It can be said that these people are able to preserve their identity and religion. They have succeeded in their careers. And they are able to live peacefully with people of different races, both Muslims and people with different faiths. Interviewee: Asst.
