ACADEMIC GURU Effects on Health and Longevity: Comparison Between Food and Medicine Medical and nutritional experts estimate that human lifespan, based on genetics, can be as long as 140 years. In reality, it cannot be as much as that due to many reasons, such as dysmetabolism, bad behaviors, intoxicants intake, malnutrition, hormonal imbalances, and free radicals. These factors reduce life expectancy from 140 years to 70 years, or only a half of what it is estimated. The remaining life expectancy is further stressed by other factors such as crimes, accidents, ailments, and environmental conditions. The average life expectancy is, thus, reduced by no less than 15 percent. It has gone from 70 years to less than 60 years, as it is witnessed today. From the above data, it is clear that the main factors that shorten human life expectancy are from food and nutrition, and other related factors. The rest are just elements. This has been known for thousands of years. Thus, traditionalChinese,Indian,Arabic,Greco-Roman,Mesopotamian, and Egyptian medical textbooks emphasize food. A Chinese medical textbook or Zhong Yi (中医), therefore, recommends food as medicine. In Islam, the matter of food consumption covers both eating and fasting, suggesting what to eat, how much to eat, when to eat, and how to fast. The science of food consumption can be extended into many branches. The matter of health is linked to medication. Professor Stephen Simpson, MD, Director of the Charles Perkins Center, University of Sydney, Australia, led the research team to compare the importance of food and medicine in healing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. The research also studied the impact of food on life expectancy, both in rats and in humans, and was published in the Cell Metabolism Journal during mid-November 2021. The study compared the usage of 40 diet regimens that were different in amount of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to the usage of medicine, then observed the effect on life expectancy by in-depth study on the effects of proteins, calories, and drugs on mitochondria and other elements of cell related to lifespan. The results of this complex study concluded that food and nutrition have a better effect on health and longevity than medicine. In conclusion, one who wants to live longer should pay more attention to eating and fasting. Don’t waste a lot of money on drugs. 5 HALAL INSIGHT | ISSUE 54 JANUARY 2022

INDUSTRY CORNER Functional Food: New Trend of Health-Conscious Consumers It is undeniable that the COVID-19 outbreak is an important stimulus for consumers to be more mindful in choosing food. Most consumers do not just want food that tastes good and looks attractive but they pay more attention to healthy foods that could boost immunity and are more conscious about food nutrition. Functional food is food product for health that new ingredients or existing ingredients are added into it. The objective of this is to enhance the body’s ability in maintaining itself and preventing diseases. [1] Functional foods or beverages may derive from natural ingredients. They do not look like pills of drugs or dietary supplements. They can be consumed with food or become part of the main meal. Types of functional food and beverage products in the market that are popular among consumers are foods or beverages that help going to sleep fast, foods and beverages that enhance health, foods and beverages that reduce stress, and foods and beverages that improve the digestive system, etc. [2] In addition to providing benefits to consumers, functional food is environment-friendly. The value of the functional food market in Thailand during 2019 was more than 69,000 million baht. In the past 5 years, it grew at the average of 5.5 percent per year. The products that have been popular in the past 5 years are such as yogurt, milk, sugar-free desserts, cereals, infant milk, bread, biscuits, and snack bars. [3] Although most consumers are interested in consuming functional food, it is still considered a niche market. However, the government continues to encourage small entrepreneurs (SMEs) to produce this kind of food and beverage products, including continuous product research and development, to increase the market for this group of consumers and those who have just turned to try this type of food as well. 7 HALAL INSIGHT | ISSUE 54 JANUARY 2022

Be it because of the incidence of various viral diseases, especially the coronavirus that develops mutation rapidly, this makes people around the world more aware of their health and eating behaviors. Therefore, consumers are concerned about foods that are good quality, high in nutrition, and safe. Plant-based protein is becoming popular among consumers because it provides less calories than meat and gives no saturated fat. What is Plant-based Protein? Prof. Dr. Winai Dahlan, the Founding Director of the Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University, led executives and staffs to welcome Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Ahmed Sarhan, Special Advisor of Dr. Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League (MWL). He is also the Director of the Muslim World League in Rome, Italy. Mr. Chakrinorathip Sevikul, Director of the Middle East Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led a group of 8 members to welcome him as well. The objective of this visit was to get ready before the Secretary General will come to visit and cooperate with Thailand. The Muslim World League wishes to build a network with Thailand’s university and has chosen Chulalongkorn University since it is a leading university and the Halal Science Center is also under Chulalongkorn University. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Winai Dahlan provided a speech about the beginning of the Halal Science Center’s operation, including the works on Halal science in Thailand. HALAL HIGHLIGHT Global warming is a phenomenon that occurs because the Earth is unable to radiate the heat from the sun’s rays normally. As a result, the average global temperature rises, causing the world’s climate to alter. The main cause is the emissions of greenhouse gases from natural and human activities such as carbon dioxide emissions caused by burning fuels, industrial plants, deforesta- tion, methane from the decomposition of living organisms in waterlogged areas, sewage treatment ponds, nitrous oxide from industries using nitric acid in the production process, and the use of nitrogen fertilizers in agricultures, etc. [2] All of these result in melting glaciers, breaking polar ice, increasing temperature of permafrost, rising sea level, altering of ecosystems and climates. These deliver a wide impact on plants, animals, and humans [3]. The teachings of Islam encourage human to maintain good rela- tionship with one’s self, society, and environment. This is the duty that one must take responsibility and work together to protect and maintain these relationships. Islam teaches that the ones who can destroy resources and the environment are “humans,” as stated in the Quran: “Evil has occurred both on the land and at the sea because of men’s deeds” (Quran 30:41). Human beings are sometimes influenced by the lower self. And the never-ending needs lead humans to destroy societies and his surrounding environment, or even themselves. It started from the problem of a mangosteen producer who wants to solve the problem of mangosteen oversupply by processing them into mangosteen cider vinegar on an industrial scale. HALAL PAKTAI Promoting Halal-Tayyib Food Consumer Protection: Halal Food and Nutrition Alert (HAFANA) in the Southern Border Areas Halal food means food or food products that are approved under Islamic laws and thus Muslims can consume or utilize it. Today, global market covers about 2 billion Muslim consumers. Thus, traders need to do everything to gain a bigger share in food markets of Muslim countries. Since Thailand is a significant country in terms of food producers of the world, manufacturers of the country need to seriously pay attention to the Halal certification symbols. Those who are involved in this industry should learn about it and earn the correct understanding about this issue. This is to prepare Thailand for the advancement of Halal food production industry in which chemical substances and food additives are commonly used in the process. As a result, this may cause Haram contamination in the product during the production process. In Islam, all rulings concerning Halal food standard are clear from the beginning to the end of the production process. Halal food must be free from any Haram, be it in raw materials, production process, ingredients, and food additives used in the Halal food production process. Due to this, the Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University (Pattani Office) has been promoting the Halal- Tayyib Food Consumer Protection: Halal Food and Nutrition Alert (HAFANA) by gathering samples of Halal products that are sold in the Southern Border areas to check. The collected samples were processed food, food seasonings, processed meats, and healthy products, all were gathered by simple random sampling. These products received Halal certification in Thailand by the Central Islamic Council of Thailand (CICOT) and received Halal certification in foreign countries. Samples were tested in the Halal Forensic Science Laboratory which consisted of a gelatin test, fatty acid profile test, ethyl alcohol test, and swine DNA contamination in a food test.
