ACADEMIC GURU Extend Lifespan Easily by Adjusting Eating Behavior It is said that humans have a life quota of 140 years, however, they cannot reach that point due to various factors such as genes, inappropriate behaviors, illnesses, accidents, crimes, etc. If these factors are eliminated, human lifespan can definitely extend. Dr. Lars Fadnes LT et al, University of Bergen, Norway, looked for ways to extend life expectancy by changing dietary habits alone. They analyzed their research by using meta-analysis, coupled with using statistical tools until the result of the research can be concluded. Their work has been published in the PLOS Medicine in February 2022. Let’s look through their research. The research team suggested that increasing lifespan can be achieved by changing eating behavior. Western diets that usually contain high animal fats, high sugar, high salt, and too much processed foods should be changed to consumption of more legumes, beans, peas, and pulses, and more of whole grains or partly milled rice and nuts. Furthermore, one should also eat fruits, vegetables, and seeds, and reduce red meat and processed food products consumption. Incorrect eating behavior leads to 11 million deaths per year and 255 million disability per year. The research team found that by adjusting eating behavior as suggested since the age of 20, the average lifespan can be increased by more than ten years. For females, lifespan can be increased by 10.7 years, and for male lifespan can be increased by 13.0 years. The increase in lifespan can be categorized by different sources of food. Consuming more of legumes can increase lifespan in females by 2.2 years, and in males by 2.5 years. Consuming more of whole grains can increase lifespan in females by 2.0 years, and in males by 2.3 years. INDUSTRY CORNER Penetrate Saudi Halal Food Market with the Development of Novel Food After diplomatic relations between Thailand and Saudi Arabia are developed, economic cooperation is an important part and plays a role in paving the foundation for various fields. Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Arabian Peninsula or the Middle East. It is an important center of the Muslim world. It has capability in product import to support the country’s development according to one of the Kingdom’s crucial goals of reducing dependency on oil revenues. [1] However, these strengths make Saudi Arabia an attractive and highly competitive market. Religious social context results in strict regulations and inspections on imports of goods, especially products in the food industry. In 2020, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) issued “Draft of General Requirements for Novel Foods”, which is a law that will play an important role in regulating the importation of novel food [2]. The essence of this law covers: 1) food or food components that have never been imported to be consumed in Saudi Arabia; 2) food or food components obtained from new processes that result in a change in the form of food [3], including nutritional values and chemical processes in the body (Metabolism). The reason that requires safety assessment for novel food is to ensure the safety of novel food products that are produced and imported for sale [4], and to protect and create trust among consumers in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, entrepreneurs in the food industry who are interested in exporting products, especially novel food, to the Saudi market need to be concerned about regulations related to product development. When it comes to cosmetics, the description of this word is products that beautify our skin. Products that enhance beauty are usually created for women who want to boost their confidence. But when time changes, consumer behavior also changes. Nowadays, men have turned to focus on healthcare as well. They are keen on taking care of themselves, enhancing their personality, and boosting their self-confidence. By all this, they will feel ready to cope with every opportunity that comes their way. The change in Thai people’s behavior on being more concerned about their health has affected the growth of the beauty market. Thus, if diabetics want to fast in the month of Ramadan, they should undergo health assessment before the holy month. They should consult their doctors concerning their eating patterns and medication adjustment. Plus, they should strictly follow doctor’s instructions, break the fast immediately if any unpleasant symptoms or warnings arise, and have regular blood sugar checks.
