Nowadays, technology in the food Industry is remarkably advanced. The production process is more complicated which makes traceability harder. Consequently, some traders take this situation as an opportunity to reduce the cost of products by using different ingredients to what appear on product labels. This problem happens in many countries, including Thailand. Thus, DNA technique is popularly utilized. But how does DNA technique benefit us? ACADEMIC GURU WHOLE GRAIN HELPS REDUCE OBESITY AND DIABETES Consuming whole grain or unrefined grain is better than consuming refined grain. The benefits of whole grain are many. In the past, there was not so much research to support the hearsay that it helps reduce cardiovascular disease. But now there is international research that supports this. Let’s check it out. One of the research that is widely accepted is the they will be at less risk of obesity and diabetes. [4] The examples are such as Spectroscopy, Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), Fourier transform by its physical characteristics. This facilitates adulteration in meat products and traceability of meat origin becomes difficult.[2] This problem is found in many countries. In Malaysia, beef was substituted by kangaroo meat. In Indonesia, rat meat was found in meatballs that were supposed to be made of pure beef. In China, rat meat was found in lamb products. Prof. Dr. Winai Dahlan, Prof. Dr. Suwimol Keeratipibul, and the research team, expect to transform this innovation into complete test kits that are user-friendly. The process will start from DNA extraction to DNA amplification, and the ending process is detection. The cost of a DNA strip is about 300 Baht, which is 10 times lower than laboratory detection. This novel technique is an effective tool to control and guarantee Halal food quality. With it, the producers and consumers of Halal food will gain more trust that there is no haram contamination in ingredients and food products. GLOBAL UPDATE The number of Muslim population in Malaysia is around 16 million or 60% of total population. [3] This number does drive the demand on Halal products in the country. The market share of the domestic Halal industry is around 67.5 billion USD and it is expected to reach 96.4 billion USD within 2030 [4] or 15% of the country’s GDP. [5] Besides that, due to Malaysia’s close relationship with other Muslim markets, especially of Indonesia and many other countries in the Middle East, this is a big opportunity for Malaysia’s exports. Thus, the country is the leader in Halal food production in the world, even during the crisis of COVID-19. In 2020, Halal food export was 7.5 billion USD per year. It had been downsized at around 2.5 billion USD from 9.6 billion USD in 2019. (2) Due to the strength of its market value, Halal industry is still considered the main mechanism for stimulating the country’s economy. Mr. Hairol Ariffein Sahari, the president of Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) said that the significance and quality of the domestic Halal industry will make it become one of the main ways to stimulate the country’s economy. Many innovative ideas have been raised to meet the needs of Halal product consumers. Digital platforms and Halal services of HDC, such as Halal Parks, Halal Training Institute, Halal Consultancy and Advisory, and Halal Knowledge Centre were introduced. Prof. Dr. Winai Dahlan, the Founding Director of the Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University as chief, led executive officers, consultants, and HSC officers to various communities in Bangkok and the metropolitan area such as Al-Istiqama Masjid, Salaloi, On Nuch, Manafi ul-Islam at Kaja canal, Darul Naim Masjid, Seri Thai 34, Jamiul Muttaqeen at Lam sari, Miftahul Jinan at Lamjiak, Seri Thai 21, Darul Aman school at Tha It, Nakorn Nayok Community, Community Isolation Center at Minhaj Islam Foundation in Ayuttaya, Subdistrict Administrative Organization of Klong Takien in Ayuttaya, Community Isolation at Pattana Beung Kwang, Montong Wittaya School in Cha Cheng Sao, Busta ul-Arifin Masjid in Cha Cheng Sao, Salih ul-Islam Masjid, Nurul Islam Masjid in Kukot, Community Isolation Center at Darussalam in Nongjok and nearby communities. The Halal Science Center, Chula, allocated volunteers among members of executive team and general officer team to assist people who suffered from this pandemic under the project entitled “Ruam Nam Neung Jai: Assist Communities Affected by COVID-19 Pandemic 2021” on the occasion of HSC’s 18th anniversary. HALAL PAKTAI Prince of Songkla University (PSU) Conducted “WORLD HAPEX ONLINE 2021”, an Opportunity for Halal Products and Services in the Southern Border Areas to Expand During COVID-19. Pak Tai column this issue would like to inform our readers about the Halal Products Exhibition and Conference or World HAPEX which was conducted by Halal Institute, Prince of Songkla University (PSU). This event has been conducted continuously every year. In 2021, it was counted as the 10th. The event was conducted online during 26th- 27thAugust 2021 with the intention to provide opportunities for Halal products and services during COVID-19 situation, to promote researchers, public scholars, and Halal entrepreneurs about new means of business management that will help Halal businesses grow during COVID-19. The 10th Halal Products Exhibition and Conference was launched under the concept “Halal Thailand in COVID-19: Opportunities and Challenges”. Many activities took place in the event such as the MOU between Halal Institute and Medical Science Research and Innovation Institute, the special lectures on topics entitled “Halal Thailand in COVID-19: Opportunities and Challenges”, and “Guidelines on Halal Standard Accreditation in COVID-19”; and the dialogues on topics entitled “Role of Halal Sectors During COVID-19 Situation: Opportunities and Challenges”, “Tayyiban Standard for Health and Nutrition According to Islamic and Medical Science Point of Views”, “Adjusting Marketing Strategy in COVID-19 era”, and “Halal System Management: a 4-month-com- pletion course with guaranteed jobs.” Online products from PSU HALAL Market were presented in this event as well. Today, the market has more than 900 members. Most products are foods, cosmetics, health products, apparels, and Halal services. Prince of Songkla University (PSU) recognizes the significance and potential of Halal products. The Halal Products Exhibition and Conference 2021 (Online) provoked the purchasing power of consumers in Halal product market during COVID-19 situation. This event was also meant to prepare for the reopening of all markets of Halal products, both offline and online, in the future. 33
