AlbAniA Located at the crossroads of the eastern Adriatic, Albania is home to many unique natural and cultural wonders. The almost wild landscapes, the mighty, rugged mountain ranges, the fascinating ancient cities and sites are spanning thousands of years. People are of a surprising warmth and openness. Looking back on a long history they are proud of the evidence of their ancient culture. Amphitheater, castles and churches bear witness to the turbulent past. 5 highlights Berat The “city of a thousand windows” is famous for its historic architecture, its authenticity, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Berat has several beautifully decorated Mosques from the 15th Century and also a large number of Byzantine Orthodox churches. Some of the churches are decorated with frescoes by the famous artist Onufri, one of the masters of fresco painting. Kruja Having survived for thousands of years, Kruja is a tourist attraction alongside a panoramic mountainside location. Some of the main points of interests include the restored Castle and Citadel, the Old Restored Bazaar the Skanderbeg Museum located inside the castle and erected in memory of the Albanian national hero, the restored house of the Pasha of Kruja, dating from the ottoman period, which hosts the Ethnographic Museum. Butrint Butrint, ancient Buthrotum, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in southwest Albania. Situated on the Straits of Corfu, and surrounded by a picturesque lagoon, it is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Adriatic region. The site has been occupied since at least the 9th century B.C., but legends hint to the city’s foundation by Trojan exiles. GjiroKastra old town Gjirokastra’s old town is noted on UNESCO’s World Heritage list as “a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, those of a citadel town built by notable landowners.” Also known by many as the “City of Stone,” Gjirokastra is a developing center for cultural heritage tourism. theth national ParK Located in the heart of the Albanian Alps in the “Accursed Mountains” area it is one of Albania’s prettiest places. Nowadays the palace area is once more the centre of urban life, hosting a daily melee of tourists and shoppers. troGir Situated in the heart of Dalmatia Trogir is a picturesque town arranged with parks where every stone is a monument. The wealth and the variety of its cultural heritage and the interesting history of the town are the main reasons, why the town is since 1997 under the protection of the UNESCO. hvar The island of Hvar is the queen of the Croatian Dalmatian islands. Ringed by high mountains it is indeed one of the last corners of Europe that remains off the beaten track for travellers. 5 highlights Peja Patriarchy Monastery Pejë Patriarchy, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a complex of churches located in the suburbs of Pejë. This complex dates from the 13th century and is the site where the Serb episcopate and patriarchs resided. The Patriarchal Monastery encloses a treasury, a library and four churches which are famous for their religious frescos. A pilgrimage site for the tombs of Serbian Orthodox archbishops and other holy men, the monastery still has a working community of monks. Prizren Its well-maintained Ottoman quarter, a fort dating back to the Roman times, its 15th century Turkish baths, and a number of historic mosques, including the Mosque of Sinan Pasha right downtown makes the cultural capital of Kosova, Prizren worth a visit. Its Serbian Orthodox cathedral was badly damaged during the 2004 ethnic riots, but its restoration is complete and visitors are allowed to explore inside and out. decani Monastery Located near town of Deçan it is one of the most important cultural sites in Kosovo. It dates back to the 14th century and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site for its Byzantine/Romanesque architecture and unique monumental murals. Constructed in the 14th century, it’s also the mausoleum of Serbian king Stefan Decanski, the founder who died before its completion. ruGova valley Rugova Valley, a stretched mountain range with water, waterfalls and rocks is one of the most attractive natural areas of the region. It belongs to the Albanian Alps range of mountains situated at the western part of Kosovo. The highest peak of the Rugova valley reaches up to 2560m above sea level, and the area is quite rich with rivers, natural lakes at 1800m on the mountains, 30m high waterfalls and several natural caves. Gracanica Monastery This imposing religious site is located in Gracanica Village, just outside Pristina, and holds a small colony of 24 nuns engaged in iconic painting, embroidery and agriculture. Built at the beginning of the Ottoman era on the foundations of a ruined 13th century church, the monastery is famed for its fine collection of religious artwork, including scenes from the miracle and Passion of Christ. 6

MAcEDoniA Macedonia, a small gem embedded in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, is embraced in the east and west by dramatic mountain ranges, studded with breath-taking lakes, and threaded throughout with rivers. Through thousands of years, the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires have shaped Macedonia’s rich culture and traditions. 5 highlights saint PantelejMon Monastery The church which is one of the oldest and most important in Macedonia was built and painted in 1164. The monastery is most famous for its exceptional fresco paintings which convey dramatic facial expression and emotions not commonly found in Byzantine art. ancient town “heraclea lyncestis” Famous for its dazzling mosaics, ancient theater and Roman baths, Heraclea is the most vividly preserved city from the surviving Ancient Macedonian Empire in the country. It was an ancient Macedonian city situated 2 km south of the present-day town of Bitola. There is a small museum on the grounds with few artifacts and a nice scale model of the city at its peak. national ParK “Galicica” Due to its natural beauty and specific flora and fauna on the Galicica Mountain it was proclaimed as national park in 1958. The National Park Galicica is characteristic for its positioning between the two lakes - Ohrid and Prespa Lake, for the involved orthography and the interesting geomorphologic shapes. ohrid old town The uniqueness of Lake Ohrid and the city’s historical architecture has been attested by UNESCO, honoring it with an official designation as one of the few places on the cultural institution’s list “World Inheritance”. Bitola Bitola historically known as Monastir is one of the oldest cities on the territory in the Republic of Macedonia. It was founded as Heraclea Lyncestis in the middle of the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon. During the Ottoman rule the city together with Salonica were the two reigning cities of Ottoman Rumelia. 7

bosniA & HErzEgovinA Bosnia and Herzegovina is a stunningly beautiful country with a vast array of landscapes, cultures, traditions and people. Bascarsija has been a trading and meeting place since the 15th century as caravans from Asia Minor, Dubrovnik and the west met here to trade their wares. Mostar’s stari Most (old BridGe) The old bridge is one of the finest example of Ottoman ingenuity and Dalmatian masonry in the western Balkans. Not only does this precious stone structure bridge the east and west banks of the emerald Neretva River, it also symbolizes the crossroads of eastern and western civilizations. teKija (BlaGaj) This 16th century Dervish Order Monastery epitomizes the harmonious existence of man and nature. This stunning structure was built at the mouth of the largest source in Herzegovina which gushes from a cave at the base of a 200 meter cliff. tunnel of hoPe (sarajevo) From July 1993 until the end of the Siege in late February 1996, the Sarajevo War Tunnel was the only connection besieged Sarajevo had with the outside world. Today, it is an unusual museum and has become a symbol of the siege of Sarajevo during the war. Kravica waterfalls Among the most fascinating naturalistic features of the Herzegovinian region are the sparkling waterfalls of Kravice. The waterfall was created by the Trebižat river with its tuff deposits, and has been declared a natural phenomenon which is under state protection. 8

The most stunning attraction is the Njegos Mausoleum, the grave tomb of the national hero Petar II Petrovic Njegos, which is located on a 1,647 m high mountain peek giving a stunning view of the park, the Bay of Kotor and even Skadarsko Jezero on clear days. ostroG Monastery The Monastery of Ostrog, the biggest religious sanctuary in Montenegro and one of the most well-known in Southern Europe, is situated high on a rocky mountain massif, often veiled by clouds and fog. It was founded by the Herzegovinian Metropolitan Vasilije in the 17th century. durMitor national ParK Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, comprises the Mount Durmitor plateau and the valleys formed by the Europe’s deepest canyon of the Tara River. Besides having one of the deepest canyons, Durmitor national park can also claim to have the highest peak in Montenegro, the Bobotov Kuk. Budva old town Budva Old Town lies on a small peninsula and represents a treasure chest of culture heritage. Much of the architecture is of Venetian origin. Doors, hinges, windows, balconies and many other small but noticeable things seem to hold Roman style. There are also three main churches in the old town. 9

slovEniA Originally settled by Illyrian and Celtic peoples it became part of the Roman Empire in the first century B.C. This small country in the heart of Europe truly is amazingly diverse. Slovenia is a green and diverse country, lying between the Alps, the Mediterranean, and the Pannonian plain and embracing all the beauties of the old continent. Postojna cave Postojna Cave is the most visited tourist attraction in Slovenia and it is also world famous. Visit in the cave start with exciting train ride.
