02 DIATA | At Castlemoate House

DIATA | At Castlemoate House 03DIATA at The History of Castlemoate HouseCastlemoateHouse DIATA was also established in 2013 with a key objective of continuing to support and raiseCastlemoate House is the the competency of our staff at home throughhome of DIATA and where adopting the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS principlesmuch of our training takes and at the same time supporting their NGAPplace. It is part of the Dublin (Next Generation of Aviation Professionals)Airport Authority campus strategies. The Academy have forged strategicand within walking distance partnerships with International Aviation Bodiesof Dublin Airport’s terminals. and Academic Institutions focused on promoting the importance of Education in Aviation. Castlemoate House is adorned with carefully constructed Italian-influcnced The older part of Castlemoate House was built plaster work and stained glass in 1822. The ‘moate’ part of the name comes from a rath, or ring fort which once occupied the site. Ring-forts were simply an early type of farm dwelling, which were protected by a circular earthern bank making the habitation easier to protect. The ‘castle’ part of the name comes from a local legend which tells of a castle which once stood here, the legend says that it was destroyed by its Irish occupiers to prevent it falling into enemy hands. During the excavation for building the house in 1822 serveral coins, musket balls and other artefacts were discovered dating back to the 17th Century. Castlemoate House as we know it today is made up of buildings from two different periods, the first was built by Thomas McOwen in 1822 and was a farmhouse, the farm at that time consisted of around two hundred acres. In 1877, the house was bought by a wealthy merchant from Dublin, Christopher Dodd. He was 44 years old and his new wife was 16. Her name was Elizabeth and she was a member of a local farming family with land and wealth in their own right. They were a ‘Good match’ and while on the Grand Tour, or what we would now call honeymoon, he and his new bride fell in love with the Italian architecture, so much so that they pursuaded an Italian architect to return with them to Ireland to make Castelmoate the house of their dreams.

They were among the greatest actor/producer/ directors of their time. James Masonwould also visit before he left for Hollywoodwhere he played the role of Brutus in JuliesCeasar staring opposite Brando and Gielgud. While the house has been restored it has n otbeen significantly alterd with marble fireplaces, beautiful ceilings and ornate plasterwork insideand out. Although times were hard in Irelanddue to the Economic war, the family prosperedand were very happy. They brought electricityto the house, carried out major improvementsto the f arm, built orchards which not only gavea good crop but was home to the pheasantsthey reared.Mr Monson was a pragmatist. The housebecame a family home and the formal gardenswere replaced for tennis courts. He felt it wasfar better to see your children and friends enjoythemselves with tennis and eat homemadeice-cream rather than the cold elegance of aformal garden. Castlemoate was sold to theRedhouse family in 1948 and in 1974 DublinAirport Authority, or Aer Rianta as it was thenknown, became the new owners of the houseand untertook a large restoration programme.
