FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK PAGE 2 hese are unprecedented times! TThe last time there was any pandemic like this, according to historical account, was the Spanish Influenza, that occurred in 1920; a hundred years ago…one hundred years! Just a handful of people in this world can boast of being alive at that time. And yet, here we are, facing something that we, of this present generation, have never faced before! So what do we do, we ‘roll with the punches’; that’s all we can do. We obey the lock down and stay indoors except where absolutely unavoidable. We wash our hands with soap and water where available and where not; we use hand sanitiser. We keep mentally healthy as well, not just by staring at a screen all day but also by occupying ourselves with tasks, games and other positive activities; learn a new skill, language, hobby. The Easter holiday is upon us but it will be one with a difference; we will all be indoors. To that effect, we share with you a few websites that you might find useful in engaging with your children. As it is, a number of educational websites have opened their sites to the general public, making all of their resources free for a limited time; kindly avail yourself. Below are a few but don’t forget to enable the SafeSearch on YouTube or use Kiddle instead of Google or download YouTube for Kids. Yes, the internet is a rich resource but it can also be a veritable minefield. www.khanacademy.org www.duolingo.com www.natgeokids.com https://go.brainpop.com/COVID19 https://www.nsf.gov/news/classroom/astronomy.jsp https://qz.com/india/1826430/indias-coronavirus-lockdown-work-from-home-with-kids-is- hard/ Thank you parents, staff and students for your support at this time; we are all trying to figure it out together…at the same time. But most of all, thank you to the Board of the Regent Family of Schools for their most generous donation! Most generous! Thank you! This is what it is all about; rising to the occasion, when it’s called for! This is also that time…that time when you don’t put off checking on one another, even if it’s from a distance – a call, an iMessage, WhatsApp, email, Google Meet/Hangout/Duo…whatever medium you use, call, text, reach out. Isolation can be worse than a physical ailment. This too shall pass. Stay indoors and stay safe! Respect Responsibility Resourcefulness THE REGENT DIGEST VOLUME 8 ISSUE 25
PAGE 3 COVID-19: MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD Dear Parents, During these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is apparent that there is a shortage of beds for isolation centres in Abuja and we are aware that it might take weeks to get the beds in place. As a result of this, The Regent Secondary School, as part of its contribution to support the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, has donated all the beds in our hostels towards the efforts to set up a 500- bed isolation centre in Abuja. All mattresses have been waterproofed for hospital use by the school. At the moment, the school has placed orders for brand new beds that will be ready for our students in time for school resumption. On this note, we encourage our parents to do all you can to support the various efforts, to contain the spread of the virus. This could be in the form of financial donations, equipment, food, and medical supplies to the various committees set up for this purpose or simply staying at home. We encourage you all to, as always, continue to comply with the Government directives on social distancing and to follow the stipulated health guidelines of the NCDC to keep us safe.
