ET AT THE POLLS Our offices were closed Election Day to give us the opportunity to let our voices be heard at the polls. Check out some of our team’s nationwide voting experiences! Thank you to all who shared!

We continue the very important DEI conversation with James Carter, an Account Manager on our Local Team, who shares his powerful story below. DEI: SEE THE WORLD DIFFERENTLY By James Carter I grew up one of five children right here on Staten Island about five minutes from where I call home right now. We jokingly called ourselves the black Brady Bunch sans one. My mother always said we were poor, but we never knew it. My dad was a laborer, and my mom worked her way up in the post office for nearly thirty years before she retired. They both instilled incredible values in all their children and we never wanted for anything. Family for us was and is everything. Growing up in a time where appearance was everything it was challenging feeling different and not like my siblings. I struggled for a few years trying to decide if I had to make my parents happy or me, so I bit the bullet and did the dating thing through my college years always wondering. But hindsight as they say is 20/20. I always knew I was “different” and so did my parents. We never really spoke about it, but I knew they knew. My dad died before John came into my life almost thirty years ago. But I am fortunate to still have my mother with us who is 87. We brought her to live with us after we restored the landmarked Victorian house, which we now call home. My coming out story was not something you’d see in a Hollywood movie. Just a simple guy, the first college graduate in his family dealing with the struggle of being, for the most of my career, one of the only (if not only) black people at the table. Trust me it was and is still sometimes a scary position to be in, trying every day to fit in and feel like I belong. It is a little strange even today being a role model-- I have two nephews who have really looked up to me. They have succeeded but in these racially tense times, I fear not only for my life but theirs and all my nine nephews. Being black can result in a situation no one wants to experience. This year has put EVERYTHING into perspective and cause for reflection. Having lost two of my siblings over the past eight years (my older sister and my twin brother), I remain a part of one of the best families a man could ask for. I can count my dearest friends on two hands and am blessed to be here in this moment now during these crazy times! A dear friend’s daughter just came out on the Sunday of the 51st celebration of Pride-- I wish I was able to do that when I was 23 instead of feeling as if I had to conform and pursue the “white picket fence” dream. As a kid growing up in the 80’s dancing in places like Studio 54 and The Monster and being twenty pounds lighter with much more hair-- I hear in my head a song that has resonated for me and still does in a time when I needed it most… I AM WHAT I AM!
