CITIZEN OF THE YEAR SHERRY HABERThe Associated Parents’ Groups (APG) is proud to honor Sherry Haber asits Hillsborough Schools’ Citizen of the Year. Since moving to Hillsboroughin 2003, Sherry has been a positive, inclusive leader for whom no task is toobig or too small. Sherry’s involvement in our school district during her 11years as a parent touches almost every single program, school event andstudent.As a North Hillsborough School parent, Sherry was Parent GroupPresident, oversaw the lower playground installation, and implemented anew hot lunch program. As Art in Action Chair, Sherry established thetradition of hosting an Art Show at North’s annual Open House. Sherrywas instrumental in launching North’s first Talent Show and choreographednumerous group performances. She also organized the annual TeacherAppreciation Lunch for eight years, spearheaded the North School LibraryRenovation, and chaired 5th Grade Promotion.At Crocker, Sherry was Parent Group President, coordinated the JanetChun Mural Project, established the Crocker Art Show and chairedGraduation. District-wide, Sherry was on the board of the HillsboroughSchools Foundation for two years.In addition to the above, Sherry has been a Cub Scout and Girl ScoutLeader, President of Music Boosters at Burlingame High School, and along-standing volunteer for the Hillsborough Memorial Day Parade andPeninsula Temple Sholom.But perhaps her biggest accomplishment is that through her selflessness,dedication, and zest for life, Sherry has inspired a whole new generation ofHillsborough volunteers to get involved and have fun, all while giving backto our community!We are so grateful to Sherry Haber and thrilled to share her manyaccomplishments with the Hillsborough community.

COMMUNITY CARE AWARD CAROL GUTIERREZThe Associated Parents’ Groups (APG) is honored to present itsHillsborough Schools’ Community Care Award to Carol Gutierrez. Carolhas been with the Hillsborough City School District for 27 years, and hastaught at both West and North Hillsborough Elementary Schools.Carol works tirelessly to ensure students get what they need to reach theirfull potential. By rewarding curiosity and encouraging individuality, Carolhelps all children shine. Parents also credit Carol for creating a warm schoolcommunity. Carol has a genuine love for children and works to developempathy and good character in her classroom.In collaboration with Pam Meuser and Robin Schreiber at West, Caroldeveloped and refined the community service jobs program for 5th Graders,differentiated instruction with Theme Projects, led a math peer tutorprogram, and promoted interest in world culture by hosting an annual“geography bee.”In her current position as a 2nd Grade teacher at North, Carol uses art,technology, cooperative learning and exploration time to actively engage herstudents. Her classroom is alive with projects and creativity, organized withbooks and comfortable reading spaces, and open to anyone who needs toask for help or share their day.Carol’s teaching inspires students and gives them confidence so they areready for the future. Not only do students reach their academic goals, butCarol also encourages students to be life-long learners. One of her studentsrecently said: “School can't get better than this!
