Although the princess was happy, the king was still worried about her. “I’m glad she likes orange, red and yellow food ... but she should also eat her greens!” he muttered. Suddenly, the king had an idea. He decided to give the princess a surprise. He bought the princess a lovely green velvet dress. The princess tried on the dress and smiled at herself in the mirror. “This is the prettiest dress I have ever seen,” she said, “so I think today must be green day.” When the cook heard this, he hurried off to prepare some green food. The princess ate a bowl of green salad, some avocado and a large plate of beans. The princess had finally eaten all her greens ... and now the princess and the king were both happy. 28

As the tiny mouse tried to scamper away, she ran right across the lion’s nose! The lion, now awake and annoyed, laid his huge paw on the tiny mouse. Then, he opened his jaws wide. But the lion decided to be kind to the frightened animal. He lifted his paw to free her. A few days later, the lion went out hunting and was caught in a trap. Tangled up in ropes, the lion roared. The little mouse heard the roar and ran to the lion. Seeing the lion in such pain, the mouse gnawed at the ropes that bound him. Soon the little mouse freed the King of Beasts. “You laughed when I said I would help you,” the little mouse reminded the lion. “Do you now see that kindness may come from unexpected places?” Little friends may prove to be great friends. 34

Some people used to say that they dream only in black and white. But today, most people agree they dream in colour. Dream Patterns There is a pattern for dreaming. And the pattern changes as we sleep. Our dreams start a couple of hours after we fall asleep. Some dreams may last seconds. Others last only a few minutes. We can see a big part of the volcano, but there is a part that we can’t see. Q: When does smoke come out of a volcano? A: Usually volcanoes are calm. But smoke means that gases from inside Earth are coming out through the volcano. That’s a danger sign. It signals the start of a volcanic eruption, or explosion. After the smoke, the ground may shake and there may be a fire with lots of ash. Q: What’s underneath a volcano? A: The volcano opens way down under the ground. Deep inside the centre of the volcano is a liquid called magma. The magma is constantly moving. It may move almost to the top of the volcano and then settle back down. GRL J • 520L 39

Or did you wonder when people started playing ping-pong? How Ping‑Pong Got Its Name Actually, it’s easy to figure out how ping-pong got its name. It’s the sound you hear when the small plastic ball bounces on the table. Ping‑pong was first called ‘table tennis’. That is because ping-pong is very much like the game of tennis. But ping-pong is not played on a court. It is played on a nine‑feet-long and five‑feet-wide table. The First Ping‑Pong Games Before people played ping-pong, the game of tennis was very popular.
