What are text-to-self connections? A text-to-self connection involves relating a text to your previous experience as well as your own background knowledge. How to make text-to-self connections? As you read … • Pause regularly to think about what you have read. • Ask yourself questions to look for personal connections: – What parts of the text remind me of something in my own life? – How am I similar to the characters in the story? – How does the text connect to what I already know about a topic? • Explain the text-to-self connection that you made. Narrative Readers can make personal connections to your characters based on what the characters do and how they think. Be sure to include rich details in your narrative to make the writing more interesting and memorable. Remember that a narrative text should include the following parts: Orientation: The characters and setting are introduced. Complication: A problem or interesting situation is presented.
