Your Park District Board of Commissioners President Vice President Secretary/Treasurer Board Member Board Member Lorelei Cox James Bremner John Foy Jeff Schultz Mark Heuermann lcox@ jbremner@ jfoy@ jschultz@ mheuermann@ washingtonparkdistrict.com washingtonparkdistrict.com washingtonparkdistrict.com washingtonparkdistrict.com washingtonparkdistrict.com The Washington Park District is an independent municipal corporation organized under the laws of the State of Illinois. It is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners elected to six year terms in biennial public elections. They receive no compensation for attending meetings. The terms of office are staggered so that no more than two Commissioners are elected at one time. The board establishes general policies, adopts the budget and appropriation ordinance, and appoints the District Attorney and Director. Park Board meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Park District Administration Building located at 105 S. Spruce St., Washington, Illinois. For more information, you may contact the Park District. Mission Statement - To provide quality recreational programs, facilities and parks that meet the leisure needs and improve the quality of life for the residents of Washington. Dear Residents, As our summer programming is quickly wrapping up, I would like to thank you for your attendance and participation in our programs and special events. Our event and programming staff have worked hard this year to put on events such as Summer Camp Adventurers, Good Neighbor Days 5K, along with many baseball, softball, and lacrosse tournaments. Thank you for your input and assistance with our comprehensive Parks and Recreation Executive Director Master Plan. Our Board of Commissioners is reviewing this document and it will guide our Brian Tibbs decision making for the future. We will begin to address capital projects that have been identified in this plan and included in this year’s budget. These include upgrades and maintenance to ball diamonds, trails, and our Recreation Facility. We continue to perform renovations to the ball diamond area of Oak Ridge Park. Upgrades to diamond #3 are underway and will complete the ball diamond portion of the project. We hope to address parking and a new concession stand/restroom area in upcoming years. I also would like to recognize our outgoing Superintendent of Parks and Property Brad Kanaga. Brad has been with the Washington Park District for over 41 years and will retire in September. Brad has seen our district grow from 2 paid employees, 3 park areas totaling 155 acres, a budget of $230,000 to over 100 employees, 14 park areas totaling over 250 acres and a budget of approximately $3.5 million dollars. An enormous thank you to Brad for all his years of dedicated service. Please remember we have several ways to interact with you. Feel free to connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Thank you for your continued participation and support of our parks and programs. Special Thanks Small Town... BIG Fun! 3 Thank you and congratulations on your 41 years with the Washington Park District. Enjoy your retirement. Brad Kanaga Our park district is losing one of our most valued employees to a well-deserved retirement. Our best wishes go with Brad Kanaga as he begins this new adventure. No doubt he leaves big shoes to fill. In addition to having a legendary work ethic and always positive attitude, Brad saved the district so much by getting another year or two (or ten) out of our fleet of aging vehicles and equipment. It seemed there was nothing he couldn’t fix! Brad was fiercely proud of the appearance, function, and safety of our parks and worked so hard to maintain them. Early in his career, Brad learned the importance of fostering relationships with other entities in the city, sharing resources and manpower when the need arose. Brad did all of this (and more) for over 41 years and still managed to find the time to learn new skills, teach what he had learned, and encourage and inspire Young maintenance workers. Brad, you’re one of a kind and we will miss you! Sincerely, Lorelei Cox, Park Board Commissioner Brad K Brad Kanaga is leaving a living legacy to the Washington Park District operations. Over his many years of service, Brad has maintained our parks with utmost care and dedication. He has been instrumental in all aspects of grounds operations to include the park pool, open lands, playing fields, shelters, tennis courts, trails, shelters and so much more. It’s a seven day a week job in most seasons and we couldn’t have asked for a nicer, more caring and intuitive superintendent to head our grounds crew for all these years. Many thanks to you Brad for making our parklands a shining gem in our community and best to you in the years to come. Sincerely, Jim Bremner, Park Board Commissioner. On this day we will also be honoring our own police and fire departments. The memorial service is dedicated to those that were lost on 911, but will also honor all the men and women that today go into harm’s way as they go about their daily jobs of protecting our citizens and our city. Our memorial service starts at the walking trail and Lincoln Street with a short memorial walk led by the Washington High School cheerleaders. 14 Small Town... BIG Fun! R.E.A.C.H. Washington Park District offers an excellent before and after school program for children Kindergarten through 6th grade. We offer a variety of fun activities ranging from playground and gym time to games and crafts in the classroom. Children are divided by grade, Pre-K & K, 1st -2nd, 3rd and 4th-6th. Each room is arranged with grade appropriate activities. We have plenty of work- space to complete homework assignments if needed. An added benefit to enrolling your child in REACH is the availability and proximity to the many seasonal programs offered by the Washington Park District. In the past, we have had many programs available during REACH hours. We have had participants attend tumbling, basketball, volleyball, and drawing programs that occur at our facility. It is a great convenience for those working parents who are unable to be in two places at once. REACH registration requires payment for August/September and/or transportation fee and the completion of the required parent’s packet available at the Washington Park District office located at 105 S. Spruce St. Washington, IL 61571 or online at www.washingtonparkdistrict.com. After that, you will get an invoice for the upcoming month. The program runs August 16 – May 31, 2018. Dayquest days are not included in the REACH program, but are available on most full days off school and holiday break days. All early dismissal days are included in the REACH program fee. School sponsored snow CANCELLATION days are offered to current REACH customers free of charge. REACH is billed on a monthly basis. You will receive an invoice at our check in/out table and can make this payment in our main office. REACH plans off a flexible number of days per week to accommodate every schedule. Transportation is provided to the Park District REACH program from Central Grade School, John L. Hensey, Beverly Manor, and St. Pat’s for a fee of $85. The Lincoln Grade School and Washington Middle School buses pick up and drop off in front of our building. BIG Fun! 23 WPD ELITE – Competitive Recreational Cheer & Tumbling Teams The Washington Park District offers programs and opportunities for kids of all ages and levels to get involved in a cheer or tumbling team. Our teams compete recreationally in cheer and/or tumbling competitions. This provides kids at any level who love to tumble or cheer the opportunity to do a little more within the sport. Our ELITE programs give kids that love to tumble and cheer the opportunity to be on a team and build self-confidence, strength, coordination, and a sense of accomplishment and team unity. Being a part of the competitive teams can be very challenging but also very rewarding. There is a strong focus on setting and accomplishing goals, and developing higher skill levels. Performing in front of large groups of people and receiving awards gives the kids a sense of pride in their accomplishments. Students are welcome to participate in the cheer teams, tumbling teams or both. WPD ELITE – Cheer Teams Our Cheer teams form in July & August. The season runs from August – May. The teams will attend 5-6 recreational competitions throughout the season in addition to improving on and learning new cheer skills and keeping up with their tumbling skills. Teams will practice approximately 2-3 hrs per week, in addition to taking a tumbling class. WPD ELITE Tumbling Teams: Our ELITE tumbling teams are open to any age and level interested in getting a little more serious about tumbling. Our tumbling teams compete through the Illinois Park District Gymnastics Conference (IPDGC.org) Team members will attend class together and continue to learn and perfect new skills in addition to learning tumbling passes for competition. It will be up to each individual how many and which competitions they wish to attend, Travel can be minimal for these teams. The WPD ELITE tumbling teams will begin forming in August.
