Research Programs Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Program The goal of the IMSD program is to motivate, mentor, and facilitate the transition of students from disad- vantaged economic and social backgrounds and students with disabilities from college education to Ph.D. programs in the sciences. The UCSD-IMSD program is composed of three consecutive phases starting with training during the first years of a student’s college education, followed by hands-on research experience, and ending with the awarding of a Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences. (Occurs during the school year) Deadline: September (Fall)/ March (Spring) Website: http://cihed.ucsd.edu/IMSD%20Program/index.html UC Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees (LEADS) The UC LEADS program identifies, encourages, and trains undergraduates who have potential for leadership as graduate students and also as future leaders committed to address the educational and economical factors leading to underrepresentation of domestic minorities in STEM fields. (Occurs over two years) Deadline: February (Available every other year) Website: http://grad.ucsd.edu/degrees/summer-researches/uc-leads/index.html McNair Program The McNair Program is one of the Federal TRIO Programs, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The objective of the McNair Program is to provide low-income, first-generation college students, and students from groups underrepresented graduate education, with effective preparation for doctoral study. Participants in the program will be placed in a research position under a faculty mentor to conduct research and present their findings. (Occurs for two quarters during the school year and the summer) Deadline: February (Available every other year) Website: http://grad.ucsd.edu/degrees/summer-researches/uc-leads/index.html Medical Scientist Training Program Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at UCSD is an 8-week multidisciplinary program in medicine and biomedical research. Its mission is to provide underrepresented students in the biomedical sciences with the breadth and depth of training necessary to excel as academic physicians. The curriculum combines classroom and clinical training in the UCSD School of Medicine with research in a Graduate Department. Undergraduate participants benefit from undertaking a research project under top faculty, being part of a cohort-based experience of seminars and networking events, and taking part in a symposium in their respective region (U.S., Europe or Japan) where they meet their peers, learn about biotechnology, and hear from leading scientists. Website: http://amgenscholars.com/ National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research The NIH Institutes sponsor a wide range of summer activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH in- vestigators, career/professional workshops, and Summer Poster Day. Individual scientists select their own sum- mer interns and provide their funding; there is no centralized selection process. Website: http://amgenscholars.com/ National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by under- graduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation all over the United States. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. REU sites are offered at a variety of locations - see online for details. Website: http://amgenscholars.com/53 THE EQUILIBRIUM

In her position as Chief Editor for the past two years, she has collected a fondness for grammatically-correct, vocabulary-rich sentences. In her time at UCSD, she has had the opportunity to conduct research in various environments. From volunteering as a first year in biomaterials to completing her senior design project in image processing, she is truly thankful for all her mentors and colleagues who have helped her along the way. After graduation, she plans to apply for graduate school in bioinformatics in Fall 2017. Natalie Selffaw Ykcits Tongprasearth 54 Chief Editor Kanyanat (Natalie) is a fourth year Cognitive Science, Human-Computer Interaction major. She has an interest in neuroscience research, studying the neural network of spatial navigation at the Nitz Lab. She has also been active in experience/interaction design through her internship at Learning Equality and other design projects. In the future, she hopes to join a product design team, working to tackle important social, education, or technological issues. As Chief Editor, she could not be more proud of the journal and team’s growth, inspiring other students to make their own contributions to research!VOL 3 / 2017
