On our cover Ha’Penny Mirimar Harwood Heart of Alba POA MBIS MBISS GCHG Ha’Penny Mirimar the Fab Fawn ROM ex CH Ha’Penny Harwood Heart’s Desire Almost all the dogs with Ha’Penny, Mirimar or Harwood in their names can trace their ancestry back, eventually, to the foundation sire, the brown boy MBIS Ch Chauntelle Limelight ROMX (Donnie), son of the famous English champion Edenborough Blue Bracken, and the blue foundation bitch, BISS CH Ha’Penny Blue Blossom ROMX, daughter of the first American beardie champion and first beardie to win a Best in Show in the US, CH Brambledale Blue Bonnet CD. Over the many years since, Ha’Penny, Mirimar and Harwood beardies of all colors have won many championships, Group Ones and Placements, and Bests in Show. We always dream of the “blue bitch”, and we have had many we have loved over the years. This blue girl we call Coco has captured our hearts and made us remember all those who have come before her. She is a great granddaughter of Donnie and Blossom through their son MBIS MBISS CH Ha’Penny Moon Shadow ROMX, who sired our beautiful Nell. She also comes down the line through Nell’s grandmother, the 2007 National Specialty winner, CH Ha’Penny Harwood Heartthrob (Macey), also descended from Donnie and Blossom and our beloved MBIS MBISS CH Ha’Penny So Sue Me ROM. She has started her career well, with eight points toward her championship. She has recently been joined by her blue cousin, Mirimar Ha’Penny Stella By Starlight, another descendant of Donnie, Blossom and Macey, who is going to puppy classes and will join Coco to proudly carry on our line of so many blue bitches coming down from the great Blossom. Meadows’ Over The Rainbow Ferg has taken Karen and me on a wonderful and exciting journey into the dog show world. When we acquired him from Eileen Eaton as our very first show puppy, we were delighted to see other breeders, as well as handlers, see so much potential in our boy. Although Ferg is our loved family member first, he has also achieved his Bronze Grand Championship with multiple Best of Breed wins and Group placements. Being newcomers to the show world, we couldn’t have asked for more. What a journey this has been, having a special dog and getting to know so many wonderful Beardie owners and breeders. We look forward to the coming year and hope that Ferg will continue to bring home those ribbons! Ben and Karen Wyant design by topdog graphics 1
PATAGONIAN SHEEPDOG Genomic Analysis Traces the Footprints of Extinct UK Herding Dogs to South America https://journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.1010160#pgen-1010160-g004 A – Historical migration route from UK to Falkland Islands to Southern and Northern Patagonia. Migration of Corgis 1860; Patagonian Sheepdog, OES, Australian Kelpie shepherds and dogs continued towards the Aysen region in 1863; Shetland Sheepdog 1865; Collie 1873; Border Collie northern Chilean Patagonia through Argentina to about 1910. 1882. Today these two PGOD subpopulations are separated by natural barriers; even so they are similar in appearance and behavior, All groups of PDOGs had lower levels of inbreeding as defined suggesting selection for a common function. Documents about by mean inbreeding coefficient when compared to the other recruitment of Scottish workers stipulated that a sheepherder herding breeds. This was also the case when nucleotide diversity had to bring one or two sheep dogs. Those with pups, signifying of the three PDOG groups was checked. Those findings suggest reproductive potential, would be given preference. highest genetic diversity among the PDOG than the other herding breeds in this study. (see below for these comparisons). Haplotype is a group of alleles transmitted together; alleles are alternative forms of the same gene in a given position on a chromosome. For a better understanding of breed development and evolution, analysis was done on shared haplotypes between breeds. It was found that all three subpopulations of PGOD share haplotypes with the nine herding breeds of the UK rural clade (which includes Australian Shepherds, Bearded Collie, Border Collie). This suggests that the exchange of haplotypes occurred before arrival of the PGOD ancestors in South America or the separation into subpopulations in Patagonia. The Old Welsh Grey (see B above with map), a now extinct UK breed, was likely related to the PGOD. A technique called clustering was used to study ancestry patterns. The PGOD was more genetically heterogeneous than the UK clade breeds. Study of 13 PDOG from an isolated island in southern Patagonia showed over 95% PDOG ancestry (in other words a homogeneous population). When comparing the genomic structure of this homogeneous group to several breeds there was a strong genetic signature (i.e., they weren’t separable) within the PDOG/Kelpie/Border Collie group; in turn that group had a strong genetic signature to the Bearded Collie (73%), and the Aussie (65%) – indicating that these breeds likely stemmed from common ancestry rather than recent admixture. Most likely this occurred before the mid-1800’s when breeding focus was to have an intuitive and intelligent dog regardless of pedigree and without selection to conform to visual standards. By 3

QuinnGCh Papaw Jump for Joy of Auldscotia May 10, 2010-April 3, 2022 Quinn made her way into the hearts of everyone she knew. And if she had any trouble, she had a very strong nose to nudge the challenge with. She was a beautiful Beardie in structure and temperament, an easy traveler and perfect companion. She loved the show ring and the sofa, all her friends and her opportunities to herd sheep. Quinn loved life and life truly loved her back until her hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. She was joyful and loving until her very last day. I will miss you always, my sweet, joyful baby Quinn. — Jennifer Waldeck Athens, GA Please remember the Bearded Collie Club of America 39 Charitable Trust Annual Cancer Challenge Fund in your annual giving plans.

“I wish my mom, Beryl DeBorba, was here to talk about Suzanne. If not for Suzanne, we may not be involved in Beardies. Suzanne’s generosity and kindness in sharing her knowledge with my mom was very influential in our start in Beardies. Our first Beardie was imported from Willowmead in 1976. Mom proudly showed CH Spring Magic of Willowmead CDX. Our second Beardie arrived in 1977 - CH Willowmead Super Love. Thus began Willowisp Bearded Collies. We are forever grateful to Suzanne for her dedication and love of Beardies.” Kitty Hale Janet Atkins Michele Ritter Ruth Colavecchio Chet Jezierski Rosemary Schroeder Anne Wilding Carolyn Hoffman Carol Scott Wathen Claudia McNulty Paul & Sue Glatzer 41

Jim received his angel wings far too early on March 29, 2022, surrounded by family who shared wonderful memories and stories of the time they shared with this generous and loving man. Jim and Carole spent 57 wonderful years together. He was a devoted husband, father to their many dogs over the years, and great friend to many of us. Dog shows were not Jim’s favorite thing, but he could be counted on to support “the kids” in whatever they did. He was a longtime member and treasurer of the South Coast Beardie Bunch, and enjoyed herding and agility fun days with the Beardies. We will all remember Jim for his caring ways and helpful spirit. Jim had many interests in addition to dogs, including NASCAR, working in his beautiful yard, his Porsche collectors’ club, travel, fishing, and spending time at the family cabin in the mountains of Southern California. But most of all, he found great joy in spending time with his family, friends, and dogs regardless of the event or setting. We all loved Jim and will miss him greatly. And we imagine that there was a joyous reunion for him with many much- loved Bearded Collies. CH Highland’s M Jane was absolutely courageous. From puppyhood onward, she was loving, intelligent, and a gracefully steady and quietly confident companion. It was her courage that helped her remain so until the end of her life.At five, she was struck with autoimmune hemolytic anemia and spent her sixth birthday hospitalized at the Richmond Valley Veterinarian Practice. She recovered from the acute nature of this illness, but lived with its chronic effects and sporadic flare-up damages including, ultimately, the blindness of her last few years. No matter all these difficulties, Jane remained an active tug-of-war participant, an eager loose-lead walker in the park and on the streets she knew so well, an adventurous RV camper, the alpha among our dogs, and a Beardie who could be counted on to be at one’s side. She was dearly loved and admired by all three generations of our family and by many others, and she is deeply missed by all. Loved and owned by Kathryn Cullen-DuPont, Joe DuPont & Lilian Esposito 44

I was so blessed to share my life with Tassie these past 16 yrs. She came along when I needed her most and she captured my heart. I had lost my soulmate Sweet Pea 22 days before. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to love another so much after Sweet Pea. But Tassie had such a personality, I fell in love with her. Tassie was MY girl. Nobody else mattered to her. She had a fun and fabulous show career. National Specialty wins included BOS in Puppy Sweeps in 2006 and BOS in Veteran Sweeps at 14.5 yrs, and an Award of Merit seven weeks after her litter of ten. She won numerous independent specialty AOMs and Best Puppy and Best Veteran in Sweeps and was Group placing at the all breed shows. And she gave me very special kids to carry on with, who also won at specialties and have produced outstanding kids themselves. Thank you Arlene Fenney for my special lady. design by Michele Ritter 48
