Some did not receive the issue; I apologize for the delay. I would like to place the blame on the fulfillment house, however, they were only one part of the problem. The post office and our mailing list also played a role in the problem. The next issue is the Performance issue. We will again offer the performance feature: a half-page color ad insert for $70.00, two ads to a page. The ads will be formatted and include call name, AKC name and titles, sire and dam, owner plus 25 words describing your Beardie. Any one placing an ad in this section will be included in a drawing for $75. So everyone has a chance that their ad is free! There will also be critiques and results from specialties and Westminster Kennel Club in the next issue. I urge our conformation enthusiasts to step up and advertise their wins and placements too. We need advertising as well as editorial content to produce the magazine. It’s up to all of you to make each issue special. The Specialty will be a “Western” event taking place at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, Santa Rosa, California, in conjunction with the Harvest Moon Classic Cluster. The show is being Co-Hosted by the members of the NWBCCPS, NCBCF, BCCSC, BCCA and of course anyone can help. Back cover story At Briarpatch and Strathearn we have been fortunate to have bred multiple generations of bearded collies true to the standard in form and function. Whether we look back at our foundation sire at Briarpatch, Orly, Classical Guess Who, or to Hart, Strathearn’s Hart And Soul, we find dogs that fit the standard. They succeeded in the show ring and performance venues, and bred true to their phenotype and passed their excellence forward. Our current dogs in residence combine pedigrees of the Briarpatch and Strathearn heritage.Hart was a multiple Best in Show and National Specialty winner. He had an incredible influence on the breed through his offspring. This included, among others, GCH Dreamchaser Strathearn Soulmate, Dilynn, who was the 2014 BCCA National Specialty winner and has more than ten American champion children to his credit. Dilynn was bred to CH Kaboodle Return To Sender HSAs RN and produced our Bertie, GCHB Kaboodle Soulmate For Strathearn RA NA HT BCAT. Bertie was the 2022 Westminster Best of Breed winner, and epitomizes our vision of the standard, carrying himself with power and grace. Leo We also want to highlight our youngest boy in residence, Leo, CH Strathearn’s Enduring Tradition RN BCAT CGC TKN. The aptly named son of MBIS CH Strathearn’s Hart And Soul is just two years old, but is already turning heads at specialties and all breed shows. He is a worthy next act for his sire and dam. Winnie, Leo’s dam, GCHB Briarpatch Give Your Heart Away RE OA NAJ PT BCAT, is a specialty winner and national specialty BOS winner. Bertie and Leo both have CHIC numbers, posting good hips, normal thyroid, and normal eye results. TALES OF A THERAPY DOG In the mid-1990s, Bryna and I used to visit in a nursing cheering. Once she asked what we were working on in herding, and I told her we were trying to get better on squaring flanks. “Oh, that is really hard for a young dog” she said, and wanted to know how we were doing. (I thought, “I could walk up and down the hall at work for days and never find anyone who had any concept of what it means to square flanks.”) This was clearly a person who knew sheep and herding dogs. As Mrs. D’s health got worse, I observed that if I gave her a picture of Bryna or the sheep, they would be right there on her night stand when I came back. So, knowing how she treasured pictures of beardies herding, I thought she would be even happier to see German shepherds herding. I contacted the administrator of the GSD list-serve (this was years before FB, etc.), and explained the situation. I asked for photos of GSDs herding sheep. I gave my snail mail address, and asked people to send me photos of their GSDs herding. As I recall, I got about a dozen photos. One was from someone who did not herd with her dogs, but did have a litter of puppies, and sent a message saying that she thought her puppies’ pictures might be just as 8 Volume 53, No. 1 Beardie Bulletin

We are lucky to have many fine obedience instructor- competitors in the St. Louis area. I needed someone who could whip Team Vim back into shape. Former equestrian instructor-competitor, Kim Berkley had made a complete switch to dog training (obedience, agility, rally, herding) a decade or so ago. She is one of those rare people who can make humans and animals take note and straighten up just by proximity. When I started taking private lessons from Kim, I discovered she also has an uncanny way of making me believe in myself, even when I was floundering in the darkest depths of despair. Mid-November 2022, Kim became my over-the-hump coach. From her I learned the following: 1) I had become a stale trainer, 2) I had lowered my criteria, 3) I was letting Vim ‘argue’ with me when we set up, and 4) I needed a more focused pre-ring routine and ring entrance. Kim showed me how to address these issues. I kept Vim honest to my original criteria. I changed each exercise set up to include a left turn before the automatic sit. I instituted a one-minute attention session right before we purposefully heeled into the ring. While this may not seem like much, it made a huge difference in Team Vim’s performance. On March 9, 2023, Gracie sauntered into the show ring and earned her Grand Champion Gold title.After she was done strutting around the ring with a big smile on her face on that Special Day, she called for a family meeting with Annie, Barkley, Owen and Penelope. “Listen carefully, my Little Ones. I have accomplished what I have set out to do with my show career. I have spent almost six years having tremendous fun running around the ring. I have earned both a BISS and GCH Gold title and have been invited to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.This will be my third time competing at Westminster, and I will retire there. Roger Caras’ famous quote,“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole,” can also be applied to the many dear friends that we have made because of our mutual love of our special breed. Billy Carter was one of the best of all those friends. He was devoted to the Bearded Collie and was an active member of the BCCA for many years. Some may best remember him as the ring steward making sure you got to the ring on time, or as he judged sweeps, awarding your dog a ribbon. Billy was an outstanding show chair for several Nationals, and more recently served as a BCCA National Specialty Advisor for those putting on Nationals, especially for the first time. But most of us will remember Billy for his great sense of humor and his jovial nature.This is what made us love being around him whether it was ringside at a show, or having a quick one in the bar at the end of the day! The number of progeny for an award was decreased to that for dams. In addition the number qualifying titles for both sires and dams was changed from one per level to three per level, each on different stock. The changes were made because retrospective analysis showed that many more dams than sires had received these awards in 20 years of the awards and there was more competition on ducks. Owners of sires or dams from earlier years who were added in 2022 with the new criteria will receive the award certifi cates if feasible.
