Sixteen years ago I picked up Austin from Keitha Bayliss’ house of Tailwind Bearded Collies. Little did I know what Austin would become. I cannot thank Keitha enough for entrusting me with Austin. His show career included many Bests in Show, Best of Opposite Sex at the 2007 BCCA National and Best of Winners at the Garden State Bearded Collie Clan specialty. A dog must earn their Novice Obedience (CD), Novice agility (NA, NAJ) and Tracking Dog (TD) titles to receive the VCD1 title. Emma had completed the agility and obedience titles earlier in her performance career so I decided it was time to try and complete the tracking requirement. We both had to learn new skills and that took much practice and encouragement from many (especially Bridget Honan and Sharon Prassa).When Emma found her glove at the end of her 475 yard test track, completing her Tracking Dog title (TD), we had a huge celebration! She may be getting a little older and slower but there is nothing wrong with her nose! So proud of my veteran girl! You’re NeverToo Oldto Learn Something New 4

On our cover Ch Highland’s Autumn Twilight ROM CGC 2012 – 2019 Bella was bestowed the honor of BCCA Top Brood Bitch for 2020. Her dam GCH Highland’s Pillow Talk ROM was also awarded this honor in 2018. I am very proud that she is receiving this award. It’s so fitting that she will be in our history book for all time, never to be forgotten. Although I lost Bella too soon, she has left us with three beautiful Bearded Collies to continue our line . . . CH Highland’s Rose of Sharon, CH Highland’s Crazy Love and CH Highland’s Kari Blue. Another of her offspring, Highland’s Autumn Joy is excelling in Obedience and Rally. I can write all day about Bella; she was such a special Beardie. I did the cover as a tribute to the joy she gave me during her life. She will always be remembered and loved deeply. Thank you, Bella, for leaving us with six special Beardies just like you. Lillian & Tom Esposito Highland Beardies Editor’s Letter Spring and Summer are upon us and how lucky we are that we can now attend dog shows and performance events. We have two National Specialties this year which is a first for the BCCA. We plan to cover those events as best as possible. Since we do not employ a photographer, we would appreciate anyone who would be willing to take photos of all the events and send them to us so that we can cover each Specialty. Please contact me if you plan to do so. This issue we have two pages of adorable puppies plus two pages honoring our veterans. The stud dog feature has 16 Beardies with their full information for review. Although performance and conformation shows have been limited, there are several ads, as well as a few memorial ads honoring those who are no longer with us. There have been delays with mail delivery. We switched to media mail to lower the cost of postage for our subscribers, but we have had many issues since the change. As we are only producing three issues this year rather than four, we are going to send this issue First Class which hopefully will alleviate some of the delivery problems. Next year our subscription form will only offer first class mail. I hope you enjoyed the last issue. Thank you again for making that issue such a success as well as advertising in this one. 2020 OBEDIENCE AWARDS The “Top Obedience Dog Award” is given at each obedience level and computed as follows: a point value is assigned to a dog’s placement under each of the following point systems - Average scores and Shuman System. The Shuman System assigns a point value for each qualifying score. The point values accumulated by a dog under each of the systems are totaled for the year. Each year’s tabulations begin on January 1 and include qualifying scores through December 31. All statistics necessary to perform these calculations are obtained from the monthly AKC Awards and AKC quarterly reports which lists new titles and scores for legs earned respectively. Only members of the BCCA are eligible to receive annual BCCA Obedience Awards which are presented at the Awards Banquet at the National Specialty. The top ten Beardies in each level are listed below along with their scores. Due to the pandemic and trials being canceled in 2020, members competing in obedience were greatly reduced. Three Beardies earned qualifying scores and two earned the Beginner Novice title; four Beardies earned qualifying scores and three titled at the Novice level; one Beardie earned a qualifying score at the Graduate Novice level; two Beardies qualified and one titled at the Open level; one Beardie earned the Graduate Open title; two Beardies earned qualifying scores at the Utility Dog level; and one Beardie earned the Utility Dog Excellent 3 title. 2020 RALLY AWARDS Tabulations for the award for the “Top Dog” in Rally Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Excellent and Master level began on January 1 and continued through December 31, 2020. In 2020 there were 195 qualifying legs earned by Beardies, a decrease of 121 over 2019. To compute the award, all qualifying scores and placements of dogs in each class in the Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Excellent and Master levels of Rally were taken into consideration. The statistics were taken from the AKC custom quarterly reports for Rally for 2020. Only members of the BCCA are eligible to receive the award, which will be presented this year at the 2021 National Specialty in Olympia, Washington. To determine the “Top Dog” in each level of Rally, a point value is given to a dog’s placement under two systems: average score and Shuman. She was from the last litter born before Dick died, and the only one left in the house who had the opportunity to know him. She was born to run, and would keep up with Sue Me all day at our little cottage in the Catskills. She was a gentle soul and always helped the younger pups as they grew up.We called her the brown- eyed girl; but, when she wanted something, she would give you a longing look, turning herself into the cow-eyed girl. She usually got what she wanted, which was mostly treats. I will miss my girl, but Dick was there to welcome her; and, she was, no doubt, glad to see him. She always had a smile on her face. She died way too young, giving birth to nine wonderful puppies, and I am proud of every one of them; but, I wish she were still here looking at me with that sweet face, considering what nutty, crazy thing she could do next. She was an eternal puppy, and her nicknames were Puppy Nell and Whacko Nell, both fitting. I have her daughter Coco, who reminds me so much of her, but there is a hole in my heart that only she could fill.
