the BEARDIE BULLETINVolume 46 No. 4 • Winter 2017 McKenzie Master of Versatility

On our cover . . . CH MACH5 Wynsum Queen of Diamonds N’ The Ruff CD BN RE CGC HSAs MXG2 MJC2 MFS TQX T2B4 MV ATD In August 2008, McKenzie came into my life when I drove to Michigan to pick her up from Carol Carlsen. We had a wonderfuljourney home, and that was the beginning of our lifelong bonding. My mother had just died from a long illness, and McKenzie was justthe therapy I needed. She is the trickster in our family of five Beardies and becomes quite incensed if one of the other Beardies tries to show off theirtalent and steals the spotlight. We have been engaged in many performance sports in her eight years and have had great success and a wonderful time together. We are now concentrating on obedience but still doing a limited amount of agility trialing. She is always willing to perform in her ownquirky way with a tilt of her head and looking at me as if to say, “What’s next Mom?” She is my heart dog, and I cannot imagine a daywithout her. Thank you, Carol, for sharing her with me, and I thank Debbie Quigly, our trainer in agility and obedience, for patiently helpingand guiding us along on our journey through the years. It has been a fantastic ride with more to come! Deborah Alexander [email protected]'S LETTER I have been writing Editor's Letters for some time, and it has become very difficult to address our membership with newinnovative ways requesting their participation and advertising in the magazine. This issue we celebrate our Stud Dogs, and we have aspecial section for our boys! Thank you to those who participated in the feature. Our next issue is our Brood Bitch, Puppy and Veteran issue. Last year there was a very good response to the Brood Bitch, Puppiesand Veterans features. We created a colorful layout that was well received, so we are going to do it again. As a reminder, we publishedthe photo, AKC registered name, call name and owner for $15.00, so send your photos, as there is nothing cuter than a Bearded Colliepuppy. Once again our Veterans will not be forgotten, and will also be featured. Our veterans are a testament to their breeders andowners, so I hope many of you will participate. Members from coast to coast enjoy The Beardie Bulletin so I am again asking the owners of the Bearded Collies that are nationallyranked, to support our magazine. We feature one page in each issue, listing the top ten Bearded Collies in Breed and All Breed. The costof advertising in your Breed publication (when you are striving to be number one in the Breed) is reasonable, and our members enjoyseeing your Beardies with their current accomplishments. We have been asked to look into distributing our publication to AKC herdingjudges, and we are currently investigating ways to see if this is feasible. Congratulations to Chet Jezierski for being a Maxwell Award nominee for his 2015 Olympia BCCA National photo essay in theBest Photo Series category. It is Chet’s first Bulletin essay to get the nod. And lastly, congratulations to “Team Zack” for not onlywinning Best of Breed at the 2017 Westminster Kennel Club show, but also winning Best of Breed at the AKC National Championshipin December, and representing our Bearded Collies in the Group rings at both shows.Winter 2017 Stud Dog Issue Lillian Esposito, Editor 1

On our back cover.... “BEAN” GCHS CH Highlander MacBean at Burlesque RN HT 2016 was a lovely year for Bean and his daughter, Riot. Bothwere recognized with a number of awards under both breeder andall-breed judges. Bean collected Awards of Merit at Westminsterand the NCBCC Specialty, owner handled, as well as the AKCNational Championship from the Veteran Class. Bean also earnedhis Rally Novice title, completing the requirements for hisVersatility Award. He has retired from the show ring, with theexception of specialties and the occasional all breed show, havingearned his Silver Grand Championship.  Riot not only completed her Championship, but along the wayto her Grand Championship won an impressive Best of Opposite atOld Dominion Kennel Club her first weekend as a special. She wasalso awarded Select Bitch at the GSBCC specialty and supportedentry, all breeder/owner handled. She is now enjoying life inArizona where she plans to spend time as a therapy dog andworking on rally titles. She will continue to participate in theoccasional conformation event.  Anyone who has seen them together can attest to the family connection.  Those who know Bean can’t deny his jovial character andlove for the ring. Seeing his children verifies that he’s consistently passed on his great Beardie type and his winning personality to hisoffspring.  We are seeing the same in the whelping box with his most recent litter. We look forward to watching his daughter, Leia, growup and shine just as brightly in Canada.  MacBean is truly one of those larger than life personalities and we are privileged to have him in our lives.  Laura & Pat Colombo THE BULLETIN BOARD Congratulations to our Beardies, owners and breeders! 2016 AKC National Championship 2017 Westminster Dog ShowBest of Breed Best of BreedGCHG Dunhill Steeler Nation GCHG Dunhill Steeler NationBred by: Ray & Kathy Harrington, Carolyn O’Neil Bred by: Ray & Kathy Harrington, Carolyn O’NeilOwned by: Ray & Kathy Harrington, Scott & Val Shafer Owned by: Ray & Kathy Harrington, Scott & Val ShaferBest of Opposite Best of OppositeGCHB Wigglesworth Aberlour’s PYT GCH Classical’s Magical Meemie CGCABred by: Dawn Mieras Symes, Shannon Symes, Sharon Ipser Bred by: Riat Whales & Bea SawkaOwned by: Dawn Mieras Symes & Sharon Ipser Owned by: Janet Atkins, Charles Namey, Bea Sawka BEARDIE TO THE RESCUE!Letter to the Editor:Just wanted to share some news about our Beardie. We had major flooding in Maryland last month and wanted to share this story.... “Cami” wakes me up most mornings about 5:00 am to go on her walk. But one morning she didn’t wake me until 6:30 am. She wasvery aggressive about getting me up, barking and aggitated. She pulled the blankets off the bed and stole my pillows. As I yelled at herto stop, she just kept barking. I went to get out of bed, and stepped in a puddle. At first, I thought she had urinated next to my bed. Istarted to get upset, she never urinates in the house. But, I quickly realized it wasn’t urine, it was water that was flooding ourapartment. Our entire apartment was soaked, some areas had 3 to 4 inches. While my husband and I went into action, I yelled for mykids and Cami jumped the baby gate, which she has never done before, and got the kids up. She continued to take care of our littledog. Our poor Joy couldn’t walk very far without having to swim. I had texted my sister what was happening and my brother in lawcame right over and got the dogs and left. Poor Cami cried most of the day and kept pacing my sister’s apartment. As soon as she saw me she went crazy! I think she wasworried all day because she knew something was wrong this morning, and she was pulled away from the family she takes care of. This dog is beyond smart and, of course, she is super protective. We love her so much, and no doubt the love is returned.Winter 2017 Stud Dog Issue 3

DREAM BIG!!! the crowd started to cheer. I ran and beat him to the end of the dog walk, we lost a bit of time as he collected at the On December 17th and 18th, there were over 700 dogs end, but we did it, Blade touched that yellow! At the endin Orlando, Florida, competing in the 2016 AKC Agility of the night we ran clean and took 5th place. It was such aInvitational. The top 5 dogs in EVERY breed received feeling of accomplishment to be able to run with the bestinvitations to compete in this unique event. By Sunday and be in the hunt.evening there would be a final round that would crown awinner for each height class. Blade and I left Orlando with several mementos: a beautiful medal for finishing the event as the Top I believe in dreaming big. I have long dreamed of Bearded Collie, a beautiful big finals r5itbhbopnla,caesrhibirbtotnh.atmaking it in to the final rounds at this big event. I dreamed said “FINALIST”, and a beautiful bigof earning one of those shirts that says “Finalist” and thatmy dog and I would take on the course and run clean. But the best of all, I left Orlando having lived my dream! That dream began 10 years ago when my Bearded Collie Dream Big everyone!“Rocky” and I attended the very FIRST AKC Agility Lori WeinbergInvitational. Watching the finals, I knew I wanted to dothat, compete with the best, be the best team that my dog 5and I could be. The road to this Invitational was an interesting one tosay the least. Over the last three years “Blade” and I havemissed over nineteen months of training and competitiondue to either illness or surgery and associated recovery. Sixdifferent surgeries in those three years, two for Blade andfour for me. After each extended break Blade and I wouldreturn to competition, feeling a bit rusty, but it was truly asif we had not skipped a beat. Accumulating enough pointsto be in the top 5 was going to be tough after missing somany weekends. So to say it was a thrill to be invited asthe #1 Bearded Collie would be a gross understatement. Iwas going into the event already feeling like a winner. As the event began on Saturday, I knew Blade and I hadto accomplish two things to get into the finals. First, weneeded four clean runs; and second our cumulative timeneeded to be fast. There were over 130 dogs entered in the20” class. By the end of the first round we were in 28thplace with our first clean run. Our second run was at thevery end of the day, and we were clean and put down atime that moved us up to 17th place. On Sunday, my game plan was the same, stay clean andbe fast. For the 20” dogs, only the top 11 make it into thefinals. So Blade and I had our work cut out for us. Our 3rdrun was the hybrid class. It was one of those runs youdon’t want to have, a few sections on the course thatactually caused the crowd to gasp, yes gasp. Although notpretty, it was our 3rd clean run. We moved up to 15thplace. For our fourth round we had our 4th clean run anda very nice time. Blade and I did all that we could do, sonow it was a waiting game to see if our time was goodenough to move up. Over 70 dogs still needed to run. Atthe conclusion of the 20”class, I checked the monitor for theresults, there it was ... Blade and I were in the FINALS! Itliterally brought tears of joy to my eyes. For the finals we were seeded #9. My game plan wasthe same, run clean and run fast. They were awardingplacements to the top 8 dogs. I wanted to bring home thebest placement I could. Watching the dogs that ran beforeus in the other height classes, as well as the first couple 20”dogs, a big killer of many runs was a missed dog walkcontact. As I stepped to the line my plan was to make sureBlade nailed the contact. As Blade came out of the tunnelWinter 2017 Stud Dog Issue

The AKC Canine Health Foundation Meets Year I Fundraising Goal for Tick-Borne Disease Initiative; Launches Year II to Continue Progress in Research 01/19/2017 The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to prevent, treat and curediseases in all dogs, is pleased to announce it has met the Year I fundraising goal of $250,000 for its Tick-Borne DiseaseInitiative, launched in February 2016. Funds raised were matched dollar-for-dollar by the American Kennel Club. Building on this progress, CHF will carry this important Initiative into Year II. Grants funded through the Initiative aimto find better diagnostics, preventives and therapeutics for tick-borne diseases in dogs. In addition, free educationalresources, including webinars, a whitepaper and articles are available at www.akcchf.org/ticks. CHF is excited to announce that once again, as an added incentive, all donations to the CHF Tick-Borne DiseaseInitiative during 2017 will be generously matched dollar-for-dollar by the American Kennel Club (AKC), up to $250,000.“The AKC is proud of the progress made through CHF’s Tick-Borne Disease Initiative, and we are pleased to once againprovide these matching funds to the Initiative in 2017,” said Harvey Wooding, AKC Board of Directors. “Tick-bornedisease has far-reaching impacts on both dogs and humans, and the AKC supports this work for the health of dogs.” Tick-Borne diseases are an important group of emerging infectious diseases. As the geographic range of ticks continuesto expand, both dogs and people can be affected by these diseases, year-round. CHF’s Tick-Borne Disease Initiative andnew research grants address important health concerns including Lyme disease, bartonellosis, and ehrlichiosis, to name afew.   “We are grateful to the AKC for continuing their generous match of funds raised through the Tick-Borne DiseaseInitiative, and we also thank the many individuals, dog clubs and foundations who have supported this importantInitiative to help us reach our year I  goal,” said Dr. Diane Brown, CHF CEO. “We believe, through this dedicated researcheffort, we can make a long-lasting impact on these diseases in dogs and their human companions.” To learn more about CHF’s tick-borne disease initiative, including the opportunity to double your donation, visitwww.akcchf.org/ticks.Winter 2017 Stud Dog Issue 35
