Profile WEZI MHONE SPREADING HOPE STORY by Kapalu Mutenda | IMAGES by Kutiya Media Born and raised in the small friendly city of Ndola, Victoria Wezi Mhone was born in 1992. She began her professional career in 2012, though she had been singing since she could talk. She’s currently in the School of Humanities at the University of Zambia. Yet despite being a full time student she has been able to pursue her musical passion. Blessed with a melodic voice and infectious smile Wezi’s life theme is spreading hope. As we begin the New Year we sat down with her to forecast the year ahead. What’s the one New Year’s resolution you’ve made that you know you’re going to break? To fight less with my sisters and little brother. I know I’m going to break it cause I make this resolution every year. What new way of celebrating Valentines would you like to see? Music Having established himself as an artist who was versatile and lyrically talented, Mag44 is back with a second Album called Brave Only. His first album was called JiJue: Self Discovery and it really did sound like an artist trying to find who he was among the crowds. At the end of the album he succeeded in setting himself apart from the other gospel artists Zambia has. He mixed different sounds and rhythms. He reached out to every demographic and made sure there was a song for everyone in the album. Two of his songs have even made to some churches’ song list for praise and worship. Not bad for a gospel rapper, in a country that a significant section of the Christian population believes a Christian has no business doing rap. Now more than two years later, he is back with his sophomore album. He suffered quite some beat down from the public about his choice of performance venues. He made his first album from a place of fear, he says. Hoping to please people with his songs, he went through great lengths to do that. This time it was different, he says. This time he was tired of living in line with people’s standards. He was tired of sticking to the safe old methods and so he stepped out. Brave Only is different. Its overall theme is a sound that most people can identify, Zamrock. Most of the songs have a thread tying them together, a lead guitar that is so prominent in Kalindula. In his first album he featured so many big names, from Pompi to Abel Chungu Musuka, from the Peace preachers to Karen and the one that shocked most people, renowned boxer, Esther Phiri. It was a concoction of stars and they brought their sound and audience to the album. In Brave Only he does something different.
