BASIC SKILLS STANCE - Describes the way in which a player is standing during any stage of a game. For example, when serving there are correct and incorrect stances that are specific to each individual service. Therefore, the correct stance is dependent on the stroke being played. You don’t want to play a forehand loop with the stance you’d use for touching a short ball to your forehand. READY POSITION - Describes the generic, neutral stance that you might expect to see adopted by a table tennis player before they receive serve – feet quite wide apart, knees bent, upper body crouched forward, both arms out in front of you, and the bat in a neutral position. The ready position doesn’t change. THE GRIP -The table tennis grip is important because it controls the angle of the racket or paddle / bat. And the angle of the racket controls the height of the ball, the depth of the ball, the speed of the ball, the direction of the ball, the type of spin and the amount of spin. •RACKETS ANGLE -The angle of the racket is varied by rotating the hand and forearm. Although there are other factors, a closed racket angle will generally produce topspin (rotation of the ball away from the player) whilst an open racket angle will generally produce backspin (rotation of the ball towards the player).

BASIC STROKE - They are so many different table tennis strokes to learn, you'll probably start with the backhand and forehand . • Forehand • Backhand • Serving • Pushes • Flicks • Spinning the Ball • Loops FOOTWORK PATTERN -The two main footwork patterns in table tennis are side to side, and in and out. • In And Out Footwork Pattern In order to return a short service or a short return you will need to move forward to play your stroke, and then return to the ready position. So when moving in, you need to position your right leg under the table so that you can get as close as possible to the ball. You then play your shot and move back out again. •Side to Side Footwork Pattern The main footwork pattern that you'll use in a table tennis match is the side to side footwork pattern. This footwork pattern is used when you are close to the table and therefore needs to be fast and economical. When moving to the left or the right, you should always move your outside foot first. • Cross-over Footwork Pattern If you need to move to a shot that's played wide to your forehand side, you can use the cross-over footwork pattern. This is used when you do not have sufficient time to use the side to side footwork pattern, because you need to cover a larger area quickly.
