The Shepherd Boy and The Wolf

There was once a young Shepherd Boy who tended his sheep at the foot of a mountain near a dark forest. It was rather lonely for him all day, so he thought upon a plan by which he could get a little company and some excitement. ครั้งหนึ่ง มีเด็กเลี้ยงแกะซึ่งอายุยังน้อยผู้หนึ่ง ทำการดูแล (ฝูง) แกะของเขาอยู่ที่เชิงเขาใกล้กับป่าทึบ เขารู้สึกค่อนข้างจะเหงาใจ อยู่ตลอดวัน ดังนั้นเขาจึงคิดแผนการณ์ขึ้นอย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งแผน การณ์นี้จะช่วยให้เขามีเพื่อนแก้เหงา และมีความสนุกได้บ้าง 1

He rushed down towards the village calling out Wolf, Wolf. And the villagers came out to meet him, and some of them stopped with him for a consideration time. But shortly after this a wolf actually did came out from the forest and began to worry the sheep, and the boy of course cried out wolf, wolf” still louder than before. ครั้นหลังจากคราวนี้ไม่นาน หมาป่าตัวหนึ่งได้ออกมาจริงๆ จากป่า แล้วก็เริ่มรบกวนฝูงแกะ แน่นอน…เด็กคนนั้นก็ร้องออกไปว่า “ช่วย ด้วยหมาป่ามาแล้ว ช่วยด้วยหมาป่ามาแล้ว โดยร้องดังยิ่งกว่าคราว ก่อนอีก 3

But the villagers, who had fooled twice before, thought the boy was again deceiving them, and nobody stirred to come to his help. นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า (Moral of the story) “Liars are not believed even when they speak the truth.” “ผู้ที่กล่าวเท็จจะไม่ได้รับความเชื่อ ถือไว้ใจ …ถึงแม้ว่าเขาได้พูดความ จริงก็ตาม” 5
