Welcome to PRECIS The Precis Team is glad to announce that we are presently working towards creating a monthly E-newsletter, the first of its kind, by the students of CIS (College for Integrated Studies, University of Hyderabad). We have taken up this initiative to provide a platform for our fellow UoH members to showcase their talents, both artistic and critical. We want to create a network across campus and provide a space where people with similar interests can bond. This newsletter will consist of everything; poems, stories, articles, artwork, photography, diary entries, movie reviews, columns, experiences etc. of all languages. We want everyone to step forward and exhibit their passions and skills, even anonymously if they wish to. Through this newsletter, we hope to achieve everything mentioned above. This is an exciting step for the students of CIS and we will work towards ensuring this is a success. We look forward to your love and support. - 03 -
Dear Students, It gives me immense pleasure to see the first e newsletter of CIS being brought out by students. At CIS we have always believed that there is no single fixed definition of success. Grades in the transcript may have their own significance in life but they do not make or break any of us. Talent hidden inside us also manifests our personality and determines the meaning of success and satisfaction for each one of us. I am sure the newsletter would provide a platform to everyone to showcase their creativity and also to air their thoughts for everyone to hear. In these unusual times of lock down, when physical contact is not there between us, the newsletter would bring us together and allow us to be connected, even if it is through thoughts. I once again congratulate the whole team behind it and wish them all success. Thanks, Stay Safe, Sanjay - 04 -

Covid Response The novel Coronavirus has shaken the world to its roots. Spreading like a wildfire across borders and infecting people on a mass scale, the virus has, since its emergence, posed an unprecedented threat to both public health and the global economy. To help with the increased pressure in finding resources, Nayan Chandra V, aided by Kuruba Kumar and Srinith, from IMA Social Science, created a database for COVID resources on a social media platform along with other college students from across Hyderabad. The Instagram page (@covid.uoh) aims at catering to people in the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh region, and their associate pages cater to the metropolitan cities of Hyderabad, Bangalore and Jaipur. While posting daily verified leads, they also dealt with live requests for help with regards to COVID resources such as oxygen cylinders, concentrators, medicines, and hospital beds availability status. - 06 -
PAWSOME ANECDOTES -ADITI KAKKAD (19ICMC04) EPISODE 4: MAY I COME IN? Titu was the most humanly-behaving dog our family had as a pet till date. He was an intelligent dog and he used to pay close attention to our day- to-day activities. If Titu wanted to enter a room, he would actually knock on the door. His knocking style was very much human. When he knocked on the door for the first time, it almost seemed like someone had come to see us. He also had his fixed style of knocking on the door. Three knocks with a small pause between the first and the second knock. Knock! .....Knock! Knock! It’s been three years since Titu left us, and all that we are left with are memories of him and his paw scratches on the doors. - 07 -
MANTHAN ALUMNi TALK SERIES Episode 1 Manthan kicked off their alumni talk series with an insightful, dynamic and open conversation Mufsin Puthan Purayilwith, a CIS alumnus and an IMA Sociology gold medalist from the 2014 batch. He completed his MPhil from IIT Bombay in Planning and Development and is currently a PhD candidate in Public Policy Analysis at IIM Calcutta. Mufsin is a recipient of the DAAD grant from the University of Göttingen in Germany for public policy analysis. He has written policy related articles for magazines such as The Diplomat, South Asia Monitor, and The Geopolitics. In this talk, Mufsin discusses his various research interests, including corporate social responsibility, the digital divide, and his current field of research regarding labour studies from an organisational perspective. He shared with the audience his experiences at CIS, the reason for choosing sociology as a major, his experiences attending conferences abroad, and the hectic coursework at his current institute. He credits the IMA programme for giving him the ability to approach topics from a multidisciplinary perspective, allowing him to explore different subjects. Furthermore, Mufsin offered suggestions on various opportunities one can pursue after graduation. He talked about research and career options for a social science graduate, clearing the JRF, internships and volunteering opportunities, and some pointers on building a CV. Discussing CGPA, his opinion is that they are essential but not life-changing and can be compensated by developing skills. In his opinion, a sharp mind and great ideas are equally important, and that a key takeaway from our college education should be the ability to communicate efficiently. Finally, he encouraged the students not to allow fear to hold them back from trying out new opportunities. Mufsin also talked about some initiatives that the students can undertake to connect with people to discuss more options within the university. “Read a lot, if possible write a lot” was a crucial piece of advice he gave to the audience when asked about how one could find and pursue their research interests. Towards the end of the session, Mufsin gave candid suggestions and solutions to various questions asked by the audience about figuring out research interests, doing PhDs abroad, exchange programmes, choosing among Indian universities, the scope of certain subjects in the country and outside. To connect and interact with more alumni from different fields, join the talk series conducted by Manthan (https://linktr.ee/Manthan.UoH). - 08 -
BOOK REVIEW: UNFINISHED - Devi A (191PMP16) Unfinished, a memoir by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, stole the limelight by becoming a New York Times bestseller only by pre-ordering. The actor, singer and producer-turned writer revealed her journey so far through this book. The first Covid lockdown turned the world to a halt, which forced her to look back at the journey she came up on. Twenty years of her tightly-scheduled career never gave her an opportunity to think about her childhood. PC never revealed her personal life to a certain extent in spite of being a public person. Being a part of an Army family not only instilled discipline in little Priyanka but also encouraged her to stand on her legs. In her words, “My parents always considered me as a person, rather than a child”, exactly reveals how her family shaped her. A small story from her childhood can simplify this. When she was in kindergarten, looking at the nameplate of her home, which only had her father and mother’s name and designation compelled her to raise the question, “Why isn’t my name there, don’t I live here too?” Her father appreciated her question and added her name there too as she wanted. Her father taught her to choose to sink or swim in any situation and her mother advised her to do anything with the courage of conviction. Becoming Miss World 2000, starring in Bollywood for more than a decade, starting a musical career in the States and finally playing the lead role in an American TV show was not A COMPLETE FAIRY TALE! Common people have a notion that getting the Miss World title made her journey so easy, but that’s not true. The double standards in the film industry, people offended by her being black, suffering from depression soon after her father’s death and the usual ‘star’ controversies plagued her, but these never stopped her from success. Priyanka even started to volunteer for UNICEF, The Priyanka Chopra Foundation and the Purple Pebble Pictures, the production company along with her stardom. This book includes a comparison of the Indo- American cultural and educational diversities, the funny things during the Miss World competition, the five-point list she created for her dream life partner and the admitting law of her life – “There exist 10 percent of things which are part of her, which only she has the access to”. She used her memoir to thank every person in her life who directly or indirectly helped her and how she was blessed with a feminist father and husband. She even showed gratitude to her dog, Diana, for understanding her feelings when she really needed it. A book is that friend which will give solutions to our problems, but sometimes it can give the most difficult questions, and then it is our responsibility to solve them. Your response to the question PC wrote for the final round of the Miss World Campaign can make this world awesome - “If ignorance is bliss, then why do we seek knowledge?” - 09 -
JUST A THOUGHT - Amit Kumar Shaurya (20IAME06) Holding a certain amount of possibility to the level of passion is more difficult than choosing one. Similarly, a good bed can never be the condition for good sleep. One needs to have eyes full of dreams. Dreams give you restless sleep and make you awake to achieve it in its entirety. A sculptor designs a piece of rock, but it's actually devotion that turns it into divine. But a sculptor performs his part to the best of his capacity. How easy is it to be a tree planter when you don't know what quality of fruit it will bear? Or should one not be bothered about it since fruits belong to the tree itself. It doesn't take much to plant a tree but growing it is hectic, and that's where a gardener comes into the role. Watering a plant is simpler than nourishing it. How a plant is supposed to respond to its planter when it has the responsibility of its branches and aspirations of its flowering fruits. What does a planter expect from a plant, its fruits, or its development into a tree? Things coincide but have a difference too. Waves have an identity on shores, but it's ocean otherwise. Then why does it move back to the ocean? Is it submission or compulsion? - Haris Ansari (19PHMP03) -- 01 80 --

woman ONE DAY THE BIRD OF LIFE CAME DOWN, AND SAT ON THE TREE AND ASKED, “WHY DO YOUR FLOWERS LOOK SO SAD?” TO THIS THE TREE SAID, “NOBODY WANTS TO PICK THEM, THEY ARE NOT BEAUTIFUL ENOUGH, SO ARE THE BRANCHES OF MY FEMININITY, AND THE LEAVES OF MY MOTHERHOOD, NOTHING IS GOOD ENOUGH!” THE BIRD OF LIFE REPLIED, “WOMAN! IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU, IT'S THE SOIL OF MISOGYNY, THAT’S TRYING TO POLLUTE YOUR ROOTS, BUT AS LONG AS YOU KNOW, YOU ARE STRONG ON YOUR OWN, EVEN AN EARTHQUAKE OF TOXICITY, WILL NOT SHAKE YOUR GROUND! SO, DON’T LET IT AFFECT YOU, DON’T LET YOUR FLOWERS DOOM, AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT NOT GETTING PICKED, THAT'S NOT WHY YOU BLOOM!” THEN, AS THE BIRD FLEW TOWARDS THE STARS OF INFINITY, THE TREE SPREAD ITS BRANCHES WIDE INTO THE FREEDOM OF ETERNITY! - Muppidi Atchyutha (20IPMH13) - 12 -
