ENGLISH ARTICLES Stress at Workplace: Problems and Remedies Job stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur within an individual when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker. As per the recent studies, the stress has an effect on the overall physical body. Digitalisation has made work easy but at the same time has increased the pressure of supervising and controlling the machines. Jobs are physically easier, but the workers now take home worries instead of an aching back as seen in various research reports. The workplace has become a high stress environment in many organizations cutting across industries. Employees are experiencing high level of stress due to various factors such as high workload, tight deadlines, high targets, type of work, lack of job satisfaction, long working hours, pressure to perform, etc. Interpersonal conflicts at the workplace, such as boss-subordinate relationships and relationships with peers, are also a source of stress. Job stress should not be confused with challenge which energizes us psychologically and physically, motivates us to learn new skills and gives a lot of satisfaction when the challenge is met, whereas, in job stress the challenge transforms into job demands that cannot be met turning relaxation to exhaustion, and the sense of satisfaction into feelings of stress. According to one school of thought, differences in individual characteristics such as personality predict stress proneness. Conditions stressful for one person may not be stressful for someone else. Although the importance of individual differences cannot be ignored, scientific evidence suggests that certain working conditions like excessive workload demands and conflicting expectations are stressful to most people. Sleep disturbances, mood swings, headache, upset stomach and, disturbed relationships with family and friends are early signs of job stress. However, the health effects of job stress on chronic diseases are more difficult to see as chronic diseases take a long time to develop and can be influenced by factors other than stress. Nonetheless, evidence suggests that stress is responsible for several types of chronic health problems—especially cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, and psychological disorders. Some studies even proved the relationship between stressful working conditions and suicide, cancer, ulcers and impaired immune function. Health care expenditures are much greater for workers who report high levels of stress. Certain Remedies available to combat stress are yoga, meditation, increased participation in discussion, developing positive attitude and constant training and skill development etc. - Ruchita Mane FYBMS 78
BOOKS: MY BEST FRIEND Nowadays, everyone has a mobile phone, computer, laptop, internet and many other electronic devices, with the help of this device they can get any type of information anywhere and anytime. But for decades before this, people did not have such tools to find information, so they used to read books at that time. So, books are our never failing friends. Quote “books are our best friends” that always proved to be correct continuing from olden days. Life is imperfect without a book. We can spend our time with our best friend “books”. Every one of us loves to read books. Some people do not like to read books, but they do not hate that. Readers can feel our happiness and prosperity. All the time books give us company. Even sometimes, we think irritating books help us to recover from that. There are several books of different content. We can easily pick up any book of our choice and feel refreshed. Books are known as our all-time best friend. They motivate us throughout our life 24X7 and provide us with pieces of knowledge and fun there are so many things in a book that make us joyful and enthusiastic. The time we read the book is the time to imagine about another world. A good book specializes and improves our knowledge. Books help us to encourage when we are defeated. They also allow us to inspire our work hard with confidence and courage. So, we can easily understand that books are our real friends. Sometimes a group of hundred good books contains terrible books. These bad books make our life tough and miserable. Because of these evil books, we may have to suffer. It also increases and develops our bad habits. These bad books lose our interest in reading the good books. We must ignore bad books as they are misguided and mislead us. We must continue to read books. They help us to develop our healthy habit of reading books. We must select good books because it allows us to improve our knowledge. Reading good books carries a lot of advantages. We should suggest every child and young man read only good books. Bad books spoil our life, and they create bad habits. A good book acts as a good learner and behaves in a friendly manner with us. Every one of us knows that books play an essential role in our life. They give us joy and also help in guiding us. We can learn many important lessons from the books and also take some advice. Also, books inspire and encourage us in every situation. Books are our best friend. There are many types of books available. Some books deal with specific topics and some books with general nature. Books on particular issues are set primarily for unique readers. Books can be of different kinds, but they all give us pleasure and knowledge. I conclude saying: “My never failing friends are they, With whom I converse day by day.” - Mansi Arondekar F.Y.B.Sc. (IT) 79
