APRIL 2021, HHHO LATEST NEWS update - funding vital research A few years ago we gave a large donation which funded Phd Student Jan Novak. Jan has recently been in touch to make us aware he has now produced a paper on his research project he worked on via HHHO, and more importantly that children may now have to undergo less invasive treatment due to a new type of imaging software that has been developed and trialed. ‘Diffusion weighted imaging and machine learning’ software can potentially help distinguish, in a non-invasive way, between three different types of pediatric tumours in the posterior fossa, the area of the brain where tumours are most commonly found in children. Once rolled into hospitals, it means that childhood brain tumours can be characterised and classified more efficiently, which in turn mean treatments can be pursued in a quicker manner with favourable outcomes for children suffering from disease. This could eliminate a biopsy of the tumour which involves surgery through the brain to get to the tumour and also mean a much quicker full diagnosis for parents who are as you can imagine desperate to find out what lies ahead in terms of treatment for their child. If you would like to have a read of Jan's piece please follow the link below: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210215/Pediatric-brain- tumors- can-be-classified-using-diffusion-weighted- imaging-and- machine-learning.aspx HHHO donate to Brain Tumour Research team in Bham In December HHHO donated a further £9,000 to the brain tumour research laboratory at The University of Birmingham bringing our total giving to research into brain tumours at £217,000. Whilst it has been a difficult year in general for HHHO and also with us not being able to hold our annual charity ball, we were still committed and delighted to support the vital work of Professor Peet and his team. Jans work listed above is a clear example of the impact and importance of our support which is clearly returning positive outcomes. WWW.HHHO.ORG.UK

HHHO employs its This has been created to help clients move forwards. Some own Adult & Youth patients / carers when finishing treatment or support like Counsellor counselling often over time depend on that service. When there is change like finishing treatment / counselling they often feel a little 'lost' or alone and feel like their comfort blanket or safe space that reassures them has been taken away. Some struggle to know where to start to rebuild their lives and need support in a different way. Our Step Forwards service provides 1-1 coaching & mentoring. It also gives HHHO a chance to intervene should they need support in other areas. January saw our longstanding Adult & Youth Counsellor Tracy Spickernell officially join HHHO as an employee. Having worked with Tracy for 2 years via Hope Psychological services she has proved an asset to HHHO. Tracy is hands on with adults and young people and also undertakes all assessments and co-ordinates our team of listeners and counsellors where we support over 60 people each week. We are delighted to make her an official part of our team. Flexible support for all Even though restrictions are easing (for the third time) its until 2nd vaccinations understandable that those affected by cancer are reluctanct to reach received out for 1-1 face to face support as the pandemic has created fear amongst cancer patients. Part of our ethos is to provide support based around an individuals needs & that is why until 2nd vaccinations have been received HHHO are happy to continue supporting clients via phone / zoom if they prefer. Georgie, Tracy and Kelly are back at the centre to see those confident in reaching out but we will always put our clients needs first. We hope to phase out the remote support when all have received 2nd vaccinations

APRIL 2021, HHHO LATEST NEWS A BIT OF A FRESHEN UP Georgies pink hat comes out to play... TIME4TEENS GET THEIR OWN ROOM With more and more young people receiving support from HHHO and the running of our weekly Time 4 Teen afterschool sessions - we thought it was about time they had their own bright space. Our friends at TC Cars sponsored the room to enable us really make a comfortable space for our young ones. 1-1 support is being delivered to little ones from this room and we look forward to group activities starting again in due course. PEACE OF MIND ROOM MADE MORE INVITING Due to an increase in demand for emotional support / counselling and also our new Step Forwards service, we have decided to make our Peace of Mind room a more inviting and calming space. Originally equipped with a desk, pc and office chairs as most conversations were around money, it can now cater for sensitive appointments offering both financial and listening services. This was made possible thanks to DRS Ltd who have kindly donated £1000 to buy the paint and furniture. WE LOVE IT WHEN CLIENTS LEAVE THEIR MARK AT THE CENTRE.... ...but when marks start appearing on the walls we know its time to get the paintbrushes out. Clients preferring to have support remotely at the moment has given Georgie & Kelly the opportunity to have a deep clean of the centre, a good old declutter and freshen it up ready for the return of visitors to the centre. What therapy a skip and a paintbrush provides! The initial plan was to do a small area of our hallway however, Georgie just kept going to ensure the hallway was fresh and bright again. The centre has been sanitised and is a clean, safe space ready for the return of our clients.
