Dear Foundation Friends, Fifty years ago, John Franklin called several community leaders with a visionary idea to “endow the community.” With careful investing, continued contributions from generous donors, and the ongoing dedication of our trustees and staff, John’s vision is now our reality. Our Community Foundation is the largest local public charitable foundation providing effective philanthropy through the careful stewardship of gifts, large and small. Since our inception, we have distributed more than $24 million in grants and scholarships to more than 500 nonprofit organizations and causes and hundreds of individuals have honorably joined our Legacy Society, promising to leave a gift to our Community Foundation at their passing. We’ve spent the past year celebrating our 50th Anniversary. This celebration allowed our team to reflect on our long, rich history of community impact and honor those who help us along the way. We are a small team of three but together with our generous donors, nonprofit partners, and friends, we continue to make a considerable impact in our community. We’re very proud of our accomplishments this year. Here are just a few highlights:  Shared fifty stories of impact, created a special video and commemorative program, and celebrated with 130 close friends at our 50th Anniversary Celebration  Offered a new nonprofit Capacity Building Grant cycle, awarding $50,000 to 14 nonprofits  Launched a new donor portal and Nonprofit Wish List donation platform  Integrated our core operations through a true fund accounting system designed specifically for community foundations  Expanded and enhanced our Center for Nonprofit Excellence offerings (read more on pages 4 and 5!)  Conducted our first-ever nonprofit needs assessment survey  Deepened our partnerships with Community Learning Lab at the UIUC School of Social Work and United Way of Champaign County to collaboratively address community needs  Offered a new educational series (and toolkits!) to professional advisors  Served as a Fiscal Agent for the City of Champaign Township during the opening of the new low-barrier homeless shelter  Established 35 new funds (Our goal is to establish 50 by the end of 2023—please consider helping us by establishing your own fund!)  Received more than $2.2 million in new gifts and contributions  Increased our planned gift expectations by $25 million!  Distributed (a record!) $1.5 million in grants and scholarships to 200 nonprofits Our generous donors make our hard work possible and we are grateful. But our work is far from done! This year, you can expect continued hard work from our team and even more local impact. We’d love you to join us this year as we:  Launch our Foundational Fundraising series to assist local nonprofits in resource development  Launch our #GenerosityAcrossGenerations Family Philanthropy initiative  Embark on a new Strategic Plan planning process engaging all our key stakeholders  Connect people and resources across the sectors to identify and address present and emerging community needs We encourage you to get involved with our work! Please e-mail me at [email protected] or call us at (217) 359-0125. Thank you for all you do to help our Community Foundation and our community. DONOR Honoring the Robeson Family Legacy The late Kyle Robeson was a “founding father” of the Community Foundation, serving on the first Community Foundation Board of Trustees. He served from 1972 until 1978. He and his wife Phyllis were honored for their decades of philanthropy in our region, receiving the inaugural Kyle and Phyllis Philanthropy Award. Each year, a percentage of that endowment fund is sent out in the form of grants to the organizations or causes of the donor’s choice, while the rest of the fund remains invested. Through investing and the power of compound interest, the fund continues to grow as does the amount that can be granted to community causes annually. “We felt good knowing we could establish this fund to give back to this community we love,” said Phyllis Robeson. “We knew this way of giving would create lasting, growing charitable resources for our community. What’s not to like?” 6 • 2022 CFECI Annual Report

Ways For You To Give Now We can’t put this any other way: We make it easy for you to give to our Community Foundation. Cash No further explanation is needed! Stocks and Bonds Donating appreciated securities, including stocks or bonds, is an easy and tax-effective way for you to support your favorite nonprofit. Retirement Assets An IRA Charitable Distribution allows people age 70 ½ and older to reduce their taxable income by making a gift directly from their IRA. Charitable Gift Annuities A charitable gift annuity is a great way for you to make a gift to our organization and benefit personally. You transfer your cash or property to our Community Foundation and we make fixed payments to you for life at a rate based upon your age; after your lifetime, the remainder flows into your endowment fund. Property Donating appreciated real estate, such as a home, vacation property, undeveloped land, farmland, equipment, grain or commercial property can make a great gift. Call (217) 359-0125 for giving assistance. 8 • 2022 CFECI Annual Report

Ways For You To Give In the Future If you want to continue to give after your lifetime... We’re here to help. Bequests A bequest is a gift made through a will or trust. With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust to specify a gift to your endowed fund. This is one of the most popular and flexible ways to support endowment funds. A bequest can be made in several ways: • Gift a specific dollar amount • Gift a specific asset • Gift a percentage of the estate • Gift from the balance or residue of the estate • Make a beneficiary designation of certain assets Beneficiary Designations You can designate the Community Foundation as a beneficiary of a retirement, investment, bank account or life insurance policy. Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations A gift of your life insurance policy is an excellent way to make a gift to your endowment. If your insurance policy has outlasted its original purpose, you may consider making a gift of that policy. For example, you may have purchased a policy to provide for minor children who are now financially independent adults. Legal Counsel Each individual situation is unique: therefore, these are basic sample provisions. We encourage our donors to coordinate with their professional financial or legal advisors. We have established our Legacy Society to recognize donors who have named the Community Foundation as a beneficiary of their estate. Each generation improved the community so as to make life less harsh and richer for future generations. We should not assume that no more needs to be done. We must continue helping our neighbors and we must continue to improve and add to the humanitarian resources of our area for the benefit of present and future generations.
