Our Vision: To raise the quality of life throughout east central Illinois Since its inception in 1972, on behalf of donors, the Community Foundation has distributed nearly $14 million in charitable grants to over 400 nonpro t organizations that work to improve the quality of life in communities throughout our area. ese charitable distributions include designated gi s from endowments, eld of interest funds, donor-advised funds, organizational endowments and scholarships. The success of the Community Foundation is found in the spirit of generosity—and the donors who care about this generation and the next.ON THE COVER: For ever. The inaugural Kyle & Phyllis Robeson Our Mission: To be a leader and major catalyst for long-termPhilanthropy Award was established and philanthropic assistance to the residents of east central Illinoispresented to Kyle & Phyllis Robeson at theFoundation’s first Hearts of Gold Gala. As John Franklin and the founders envisioned, the Community Foundation has been entrusted to serve the long-term philanthropic goals of donors. e Community Foundation manages over 125 funds and its total assets have grown from $1,300 in 1972 to over $25 million. is growth in well-managed endowed funds and other assets, along with administering grant dollars on behalf of the Marajen Stevick Foundation and in cooperation with the Lumpkin Family Foundation, has enabled us to distribute $1 million annually for several years to nonpro t organizations in east central Illinois.Chaz Ebert takes a moment to examine Roger’ssculpture at its unveiling.Community Commitment Grants to the Greater ChampaignCounty AMBUCS help give special young people thefreedom and joy of riding their own AmTrykes.CFECI_2014_Report.indd 2 4/7/15 5:40 PM
Celebrating 100 Years of Community Foundations: Growing & Evolving to Meet Changing NeedsIn 1914, the community foundation concept was born Joan Dixon and Jeff Davisin Cleveland. Over its 100 years, this unique, locally-based form of philanthropy, that builds endowmentsto benefit immediate and future community needs, has grown into a significant charitable resource. TheCommunity Foundation of East Central Illinois is nowone of more than 700 community foundations acrossthe United States that collectively manage more than$66 billion in assets and make grants of approximately$4.9 billion a year to improve life in their communities. We are very proud that we are now able to reinvestabout $1 million into our service area through proceedsfrom our funds. Our partnerships with the MarajenStevick Foundation, the Lumpkin Family Foundationand other foundations allow us to further supportorganizations providing essential services.Strategic Investments in ImpactThough the stock market experienced a good deal of volatility in 2014, the Foundation’s assets continued togrow. As the size of our available granting dollars has grown, our strategy is evolving to reflect our commitmentto using our donors’ dollars wisely to make lasting differences in our service area.During 2014, the Strategic Grants Committee, made up of current and past trustees, spent time researching, evaluating and developing revised guidelines for our existing grant cycle, as well as details of two new types ofgrants. We are excited to offer the two new grant opportunities in 2015 and believe that the combination willgive area nonprofits new tools and opportunities that will yield measurable and sustainable results.Special thanks to trustees Wade Hampton and Brooke Didier Starks for their leadership, as well as to trusteesCharles Hundley and Menah Pratt-Clarke and to past trustees Tony Ackerman and Jane Green for their timeand contributions to the final granting structures.Celebration of PhilanthropyThe Foundation’s first Hearts of Gold Gala was a great way to bring both long-time Foundation supporters andnew friends together to acknowledge those who have given time, talent and treasure to make life better forothers. It was also gratifying to acknowledge Kyle and Phyllis Robeson for their decades of philanthropy in theregion and to honor them with the inaugural Kyle & Phyllis Robeson Philanthropy Award.Looking ForwardWe look forward to finding new ways to raise the visibility and understanding of the Foundation to a broaderaudience. We appreciate your support and hope that you continue to help spread the word about what we doamong your friends and family.Joan Dixon Jeff DavisPresident & CEO Chair, Board of Trustees 2014 Annual Report • 1CFECI_2014_Report.indd 3 4/7/15 5:40 PM

2014 ACHIEVEMENTS Nearly $1 Million Distributed to Nonprofits For the third year, the Community Foundation was able to distribute about $1 million to 150 organizations that provide safety-net and life enrichment services to residents of all ages in our service area. Distributions are made from: • Designated gifts from endowed, non-endowed, donor-advised and scholarship funds are the greatest proportion of the foundation’s distributions. • Annual Community Commitment Grants, funded by the proceeds from unrestricted endowments, are awarded for durable goods and capital items not typically funded by other kinds of grants. In 2014, 21 organizations received just over $80,000. • On behalf of the Marajen Stevick Foundation, $55,000 was distributed to the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club, Urbana Middle School, Generations of Hope and the Ebert Sculpture Fund. These organizations submitted proposals for projects that enhance the lives of seniors, beautify Champaign-Urbana and the surrounding area, or promote excellence in reading and writing, as was the wish of Mrs. Stevick Chinigo. • Capacity-building micro-grants jointly funded by the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois and the Lumpkin Family Foundation for staff or board member training. We Are Known by the Grants We Make Investment in Impact: Strategic Grant-Making Initiated In 2014, our board approved its Strategic Grant Committee’s recommendations for a new grant structure to begin in 2015. In addition to our Annual Community Commitment Grants, the following two new grant opportunities will be offered: • Building Better Boards Grants: This capacity-building process will take organizations through this three-phase training program: Board Building, Unlocking the Inner Fundraiser, Planning for Sustainability. Completion of all three could take up to three years. Organizations have the opportunity to receive up to $15,000 for completion of all three and attracting a total of $25,000 to their organization. • Collective Impact Grants: These grants are structured to encourage efficient resource alignment and to serve as a model for nonprofits collaborating to create sustainable greater good for the community. Collaborative proposals including at least three separate organizational partners will address the needs of senior citizens (funded by W. Barclay and Frederick C. Brasch Endowment will fund). The Foundation will serve as the “backbone” and partner on strategy and implementation. During the three-year grant period, one issue or program will be addressed. Initial funding will be $150,000 over three years. We are proud to support and strengthen the nonprofit organizations that provide vital safety-net and enrichment services to our area, and we believe the combination of these three opportunities will generate creative and lasting solutions to community challenges. 2014 Annual Report • 3CFECI_2014_Report.indd 5 4/7/15 5:41 PM

2014 ACHIEVEMENTS Public Art League – Roger Ebert Sculpture Fund The Public Art League – Roger Ebert Sculpture Fund was started in August 2013, a few months after Ebert’s death. Scott and Donna Anderson, Champaign, shared their vision of a sculpture of Roger sitting in one of two theatre seats, showing his iconic thumbs-up gesture. They had the artist and the plan. With Public Art League’s assistance, fundraising officially began. With Chaz Ebert’s $25,000 matching challenge met by year’s end, the remainder of the money needed was raised shortly thereafter. The sculpture arrived and was unveiled at a ceremony on the first day of the 16th Annual Ebertfest in April, and a dedication ceremony was held after the permanent installation on the west end of the Virginia Theatre entrance on Park Street in July 2014.Chaz Ebert, Donna Anderson and Joe DeLuce at thesculpture’s dedication ceremony.Grant Helps Foodbank TargetSenior HungerEastern Illinois Foodbank (EIF) launched a seniorgrocery program supported by a $40,000 grant from theCommunity Foundation’s Barclay & Frederick BraschEndowment for Seniors. In FY14 (July 2013- June 2014), Eastern Illinois Jim Hires, EIF Executive Director and Joan Dixon framingFoodbank began in earnest to develop its Senior Grocery senior hunger issue.Program. EIF surveyed and consulted with its partnersregarding senior need, capacity and delivery systems. The Foodbank’s first formal program was set up thoughthe Food for Seniors Program in Champaign and wasdesigned to increase food distribution specifically relatedto healthy senior eating. This expanded program served4,652 individuals.EIF used funds from the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois in FY15 (July 2014-June 2015) toexpand the program with three new additional sites:• Washington Square Senior Grocery Program, Champaign, IL• Mattoon Community Food Center’s Senior Feeding Program, Mattoon, IL• Faith United Methodist Church Senior Feeding Program, Champaign, ILThe money provided by CFECI allows EIF to cover startup costs and Food Funds for each of the programs, enabling partner groups to reduce their overhead and expand food choices for the Senior Grocery Program. Sofar, these four sites have served nearly 8,300 individuals. The Community Foundation grant will allow EIF to provide more opportunities for existing pantries to addressneeds and to establish senior-specific food pantries in areas with high concentrations of seniors. Increasingawareness of senior hunger and developing these pantries specifically to feed seniors allows EIF to help ageneration who finds itself facing the no-win choice between medication and food. 2014 Annual Report • 5CFECI_2014_Report.indd 7 4/7/15 5:41 PM
