BOARD OF TRUSTEES Trina Wright-Dixon CHAIR Austin Hill VICE CHAIR Debra Hirschi SECRETARY Deb Klein TREASURER Joe Lamb PAST CHAIR Denise Bates Jon Coffman Michelle Gonzales Wynne Korr Beth Mathews Terra Mullins Mike Royse Joe Stovall Kandace Turner Joan M. Dixon PRESIDENT & CEO Helen Levin* HONORARY TRUSTEE *deceased Community Foundation of East Central Illinois 307 W. University Ave. Champaign, Il 61820 217.359.0125 [email protected] www.cfeci.org The CFECI is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. The Community Foundation also publishes online newsletters throughout the year. To receive our e-newsletters, please subscribe at www.cfeci.org.

So, how was your 2020? 2020 was a difficult year but it was also a year in which we came to understand the full capabilities of the Community Foundation. We had to pivot from our normal method of soliciting donations and grant-making to nonprofits but we were able to do it. On the following pages, you will see we collaborated with United Way of Champaign County to distribute $1.2 million to many organizations in east central Illinois. In addition, we distributed about the same amount from our regular grant funds. In a year that nonprofits – and the people they serve – needed support more than ever, we were able to provide $2.4 million to enhance the lives of our friends and neighbors. We also had to pivot from the normal ways we interact with nonprofits to provide mentoring and support to the nonprofit executives and their Boards of Directors. We were able to do that through many hours of Zoom and individual mentoring. We have new board members that joined us in June 2020 who we’ve only seen on Zoom. They had had to pivot too, but our entire board has remained committed and dedicated to the mission of the Community Foundation. As I write this, my last annual letter as President & CEO of the Foundation, there are a lot of things to think about… • Our service area has expanded from one county to nine counties • Our assets have grown by nearly $26 million • More than $12 million in grants have been distributed • Over 400 nonprofits, colleges, universities and religious organizations have received support • More than 100 new funds have been created • The Center for Nonprofit Excellence was created • The Community Solutions Incubator was launched • 65 new trustees have served on our board We have weathered stock market downturns and been thankful for upticks in the market. As I think about the things that have been most satisfying to me over the years, among them has to be the opportunity to work with executive directors, staff members and boards of directors. They are all trying to make their organizations better. This work has been made possible by the Foundation’s very generous donors and the support of our Board of Trustees who encouraged us to do this work. As I hand the keys and passwords of the Foundation over to the very capable hands of my successor, Angie Hatfield Marker, I look forward to the growth and many successes the Foundation is sure to experience in years to come…and the many different ways we will all have to pivot in the future. Thank you for letting me help move the Community Foundation forward over the past 19+ years. Joan Dixon Trina Wright-Dixon President & CEO Chair, Board of Trustees 2020 CFECI Annual Report • 1

WHEN YOU NEEDED US, WE WERE HERE FOR YOU. That’s What It Means To Be “For Good, Forever.” In this unprecedented year, we distributed nearly $1.2 million on behalf of our donors. Working with United Way of Champaign County, we also distributed an additional $1.2 million from our COVID-19 Relief Fund to help those most affected by the pandemic. As a result of these distributions, more than 180 nonprofit organizations and causes were able to improve, expand or enhance the vital services they provide residents of east central Illinois. 2020 Charitable Community Other Distributions Development 14% 2% Environment 2% Health & Human Services Youth 14% 45% Arts & Culture Disabilities 4% 2% Education 17% Immigrant Assistance Cleaning and COVID-19 6% Safety Supplies Relief Fund 2% Distributions Housing and Emergency Assistance Food 35% 20% Healthcare Other United Ways in East 4% Central Illinois Senior Care 5% 2% Education and Access to Technology 26% Thank you to these local businesses who generously supported our COVID-19 Relief Fund 2 • 2020 CFECI Annual Report

CENTER FOR NONP In 2008, the Community Foundation established the Center for Nonprofit Excellence. Since then, the Community Foundation has been committed to helping nonprofit organizations and their boards be as effective as possible. By offering these programs and services, the Community Foundation helps assure donors that “Best Practices” for nonprofits are being observed throughout the area. This year, our nonprofit sector needed us more than ever. Our staff was able to offer hundreds of hours of support to local nonprofits. Building Better Boards Program – 90 hours of interaction with the boards and staff of participating nonprofits We offer assistance in board training and development, strategic planning, establishing effective working relationships between the board and the executive staff, mentoring and access to resources for personal development and capacity building. Executive Director Support Groups – 20 hours of support to Executive Directors through our two support groups in Champaign and Piatt Counties We host monthly support groups for nonprofit organization Executive Directors. The Champaign County group meets the second Tuesday of each month at noon at our Community Foundation. The Piatt County group meets quarterly over the lunch hour at Kirby Medical Center. These support groups provide local nonprofit Executive Directors with the opportunity to learn from each other and from local experts sharing their knowledge on various topics. COVID-19 Relief Work – 100 hours spent assessing pressing community needs and communicating with nonprofits addressing those needs We also served as the fiscal sponsor for CU Sings which benefited Promise Healthcare and Champaign County Health Care Consumers. Community Solutions Incubator – 40 hours of support to members of our Community Solutions Incubator Members At the Community Solutions Incubator, emerging and young nonprofit entrepreneurs pilot their ideas and create supporting structures alongside other social innovators in a well-resourced co-working space, receiving hands-on mentorship and guidance from some of the area’s most successful community leaders in a variety of fields and disciplines. Networking opportunities, workshops, and seminars—along with limited access to financial support—create a generative and innovative environment in which the next generation of community leaders and organizations will emerge, not only strengthening the local community but potentially producing replicable programs across the nation. We are proud of our members’ many accomplishments this year. 4 • 2020 CFECI Annual Report

Each generation improved the community so as to make life less harsh and richer for future generations. We should not assume that no more needs to be done. We must continue helping our neighbors and we must continue to improve and add to the humanitarian resources of our area for the benefit of present and future generations.
