From GenL EwelVs Official Report of the Valley Campaign. The history of the Maryland Regiment gallantly commanded by Col. BradleyT. Johnson came up with his Regiment in the hottest period, and by a dashing charge in flank drove the enemy off with heavy loss, capturingLieut. Col. Kane commanding. In commemoration of this gallant conduct, Iordered one of the captured Bucktails to be appended as a trophy to their flag. The action is worthy of acknowledgement from a higher source more particularlyas they avenged the death of the gallant Genii Ashby who fell at the same time.Four color bearers were shot down in succession, but each time the Colors werecaught before reaching the ground, and were finally borne by Corporal Daniel.Shanks to the close of the action. On the cSth inst., at Cross Keys, they wereopposed to three of the pnemy's Regiments in succession. (iCiil. Tested and Approved by the Famous Violinist, Edward Remen yi. The greatest fault to be found with the application of a mute to violin or other stringed instruments, is that the tone loses its brilliancy and becomes dead ; it muffles the sound instead of softening it ; restrains the vibration of the bridge and the resonance of the instruments, and, consequently, spoils the effect and the expression of the music. The tubular form of this mute offers a large surface for condensing sound with but little contact with the bridge retains the perfect ; vibration, but condenses the sound It produces har- monic tones of flute-like sound throughout the entire scale, capable of giving any form of expression with perfect effect, and though subdued to the lowest pitch, retains the complete vibration of the instrument. It is the only mute with which the player can secure the full expression and brilliancy of a musical composi- tion with all the charming effect of a pianissimo move- ment. The mute is easily attached. There is a slight spring in the tubes, enabling the violinist to producePateuted August gth, 1892.
