Some of ourmental problems are that we get easily angry 24/7. We also feel like no one understands usand that makes us believe that we are alone. What is more, is that parents do not realize theway we feel while we think that the pressure that is put on us is enough. Consequently, thisforces us to act in a way we don't want to, or take responsibilities or do things we are unableto. All that pressure makes teenagers feel depressed and leads them to have difficulty inopening up to new people and making new friends. On the other hand, problems including appearance should be taken into consideration.Namely, stress creates acne, a long term skin disease. ΛΟΥΚΙΔΟΥ—ΜΠΟΥΡΝΤΑ Page 42 Although many people would generally agree that the reason many teenagers become addicted to drugs is just bad behavior and parent's inability to take care of their children, few would deny that this is not true maintaining that a wide variety of different factors may contribute to drug addiction. So, which one of these statements is correct? To begin with, a main factor of drug addiction is other people. Teenagers see lots of people consuming various substances. They see their parents and other adults drinking alcohol smoking cigarettes and sometimes trying other substances. Also, sometimes friends urge one another to have a drink or smoke, but it is common for them to start trying a substance, because it is readily available and they see their friends enjoying it. Further- more, social media is a factor that makes teenagers be addicted to drugs. For instance, there are many artists and tv show actors that abuse harmful substances in a way that makes their funs believe that all these sub- stances are not something perilous. An additional reason is lack of confidence. Many shy teenagers who lack confidence report that they will do things under the influence of alcohol or drugs that they might not otherwise. Alcohol and other drugs tend not only to lose your inhibitions but to alleviate social anxiety. Not only do you have something in common with other people around you, but there is the mentality that, if you do anything or say anything not proper, everyone will just think you were under the influence or consumed much alcohol. And last but not least there is my last factor that may contribute to drug addiction and this is the belief that drugs and alcohol work quickly. The initial effects feel really good Teenagers turn to drug use because they consider it to be a shortcut to happiness. In order to avoid having your children addicted to drugs, I would recommend that parents understand these reasons and talk to their kids about the dangers of drinking and doing drugs. It is more than essential that parents understand both their and their children's position and make them feel free to talk to you about their problems and reassure that none the children's actions may lead to drug addiction To sum up, I firmly believe that drug addiction is e serious problem especially when it starts from the young age of a teenager. I hope my suggestions will be helpful and I believe that nobody wants to kill himself by his actions. Vangelis Panagiotopoulos Recent research indicates that the number of teenagers who are facing the problem of drug addiction is gradu- ally increasing. Undeniably, there are some agents that contribute to teenagers resorting to drugs. Neverthe- less, there are initiatives that should be taken by their immediate families and schools, in order to assist them and abet them overcome this problem. First of all, I tend to believe that many teenagers use drugs for the first time in order not to be stigmatized by their friends or to impress others. Furthermore, one fundamental factor that contributes to substance abuse is the immediate family. Exposure to family members who reach for a sub- stance to cure every pain or ailment is able to cause a teenager to do the same. Moreover, one other momen- tous agent is stress. Some juveniles reach for substances as an attempt to relieve stress. Were the educational sector to inform young people on the potential risks of abusing drugs, the situation would doubtless improve. I would also suggest that the family should converse with the teenagers and inform them about the dangers of drug abuse. Taking everything into consideration, I am inclined to believe that although there are many juveniles that are resorting to drugs for assorted reasons, we are able to curtail this number of drug-addicted teenagers and I would recommend that every single one of us should contribute with their daily personal effort to restrict this phenomenon. ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS g{x fàâwxÇàá ]ÉâÜÇtÄΠ. ΛΟΥΚΙΔΟΥ—ΜΠΟΥΡΝΤΑ Page 43Nowadays the people addicted to drugs are rapidly increasing. Resent research indicates how tremendous the num-ber of young individuals taking drugs is. However, the question which comes to our mind is why they are led to this.To begin with, we live in a society in which if you are not what others want you to be, then you are not worth living.Initially, today’s children have the tendency to show their abilities and generally be exhibitionists by smoking or evenworse by taking drugs. However awesome it may seem to them when by acting like that they make friends and fos-ter relationships, they do not take into consideration the fact that if they stop those actions, their friends will be van-ished. So, it is a fact that a considerable number of kids turn to drugs for showing off, finding friends or becomingpopular. Another important reason that contributes to teenagers’ resorting to drugs is their parents’ ignorance. Themajority of parents work hard many hours per day with the prospective of their children living a convenient life.Nonetheless, they have never thought that had their children to choose between living a desirable life, with their par-ents working all day long, or a less luxurious life with their parents’ cordial company, they would undoubtedly opt forthe second one. Furthermore, psychological factors also play an important role in children’s demeanor. As a matterof fact, offspring feeling loneliness, they get through a vulnerable condition and they consume drugs with the thoughtthat drugs are the only way so as to escape from the rough reality they live in. It is widely believed that the burden ofresponsibility lies on both parents and teachers. What should schools do is make children aware of the effect of thedrugs. They should get them to believe how catastrophic the consequences are. Moreover, it is suggested that par-ents work less hours and spare more time with their offspring in order to curtail the social issue. They can playgames together; go to the cinema or on family excursions. Last but not least, it is highly recommended that adultsmake teenagers understand the importance of being real and genuine. Not only will the children avoid showing offby taking drugs, but also being authentic their real beauty will come up and, as a result, they will built relationships, based on real pleasure, which will last forever. To sum up, both adults and adolescents should take into considera-tion the seriousness of the problem. Should they nit make a remarkable effort to surmount the strenuous and unfa-vorable situation, future may bring worse consequences.Katerina KakoRecent research indicates that more and more young people are becoming addicted to drugs. Although many peo-ple would agree that drug abuse cannot be reversed few would claim that schools and families can help teenagerschange their habits.First of all, as I see it, there are numerous reasons for which somebody would face this state. For instance, low con-fidences, lack of friends, family problems or stress often lead to this negative habit. Bad influence is also consideredto be an important factor. Last but not least, curiosity is what makes the situation worse. For example, when some-one watches their friends smoking, taking drugs and getting “high” they want to try so as to be accepted by them.On the other hand, there should be put an end to this and schools and families are the only that can help. It is es-sential that projects be organized in order to prevent drug consumption. Another idea would be the projection of vid-eos showing the consequences of illegal substances using graphic images. As a result, teenagers will be disgustedand have no lust for this fatal activity. On the contrary, they will crave for a healthy lifestyle.Should these measures not be taken into consideration, our society will end up being horrible and the next genera-tions will lack critical thinking and have more and more physical and psychological problems.Aliki GeromanoliSupervising Teacher: Chasiotis PaschalisClass: Proficiency
ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS g{x fàâwxÇàá ]ÉâÜÇtÄΠ. ΛΟΥΚΙΔΟΥ—ΜΠΟΥΡΝΤΑ Page 44Recent research indicates that the number of teenagers who are facing a drug addiction problem nowadays isconstantly increasing on a significantly rapid rate due to many reasons. That being a really solemn phenomenonin contemporary societies, drastic measures must be taken by both families and schools in order to curtail thesituation. One factor which has led to teenagers' resorting to drugs is the general vulnerability by which they aredominated during their adolescence, as it is a frail time in which every person is bound to experience somephysical and psychological changes combined with their attempts to fit in. Additionally, peer pressure is anotherfactor that has contributed to teenage drug addiction, since adolescents often feel the need to act and behavethe same way their friends and people their age do. Also, one more reason to blame for drug addiction is theplausible loss of a loved one whether that be a family member, a friend or even a lover, as well as the fact thatlots of teens may struggle with anxiety and depression regarding school, homework, innumerable assignmentsand exams so they resort to drugs as a means to escaping the harsh reality they have to face every day of theirlives. Concerning the measures that parents and schools have to take, there is an abundance of them, so thereis no need to worry. First of all, it is of paramount importance that after parents notice and realize that there issomething wrong with their kids to reach out to them and try to have a serene, genuine discussion about theissue and most importantly to listen to what their children have to say. Subsequently, they can offer their teenssome advice and also warn them about the serious consequences drug addiction may have on their physicaland mental health later in life. As for the school, what an authority like that can do is to invite and organize ahandful of events by distinguished and official institutions with the aim of preventing students from drug use, in-forming them about the hazardous effects it has over their well-being in life, as well as suggesting some rehabgroups for them to join making it easier to suspend from drugs since they will be with people their age, who gothrough the same problems as they do. In short, I am inclined to believe that whoever may be facing drug addic-tion problems simply needs to know that they are not alone and that things will actually start to get better atsome point if you just believe and keep fighting.Orestis HarbisThere is no single reason why teenagers use drugs or alcohol. But here are some of the key issues and influ-ences behind the behavior of teenage drug and alcohol use. Teenagers see lots of people consuming varioussubstances. They see their parents and other adults drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and, sometimes, tryingother substances. Also, a teenager's social scene often turns around drinking and smoking. Sometimes friendsask one another to have a drink or smoke pot, but it's just as common for teens to start trying a substance be-cause it's easily available and they see all their friends enjoying it. In their minds, they see drug use as part ofthe normal teenage experience. Some teens, like some adults, reach for substances as an attempt to relievestress. This can be the root cause of substance abuse in adolescents with underlying mental conditions such asgeneralized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder. Child abuse can create the level of stress that triggerssome teens to abuse drugs. If your child seems to be under undue stress, insist on mental health assessmentand counseling if needed. It is critical to remember that there is help and hope for anyone who has developedan addiction. With the proper intervention, you can make the changes that will put you on the path to sobriety.Giannis PapadopoulosSupervising Teacher: Chasiotis PaschalisClass: Proficiency
